Laid off from ABM.
ABM's crews clean, drive and maintain its clients' sites, and its annual report says most of those contracts can be canceled by either side without a substantive penalty, the majority on 30 to 90 days' notice. Since late 2025 a restructuring of ABM's own support functions has run alongside the site notices.

ABM layoff history
An ABM job sits inside somebody else's contract. ABM's 2025 annual report says most of its contracts can be canceled by either side without a substantive penalty, and that the majority carry a notification period of 30 to 90 days. Our tracker holds 174 all-time ABM filings, and 4 filings covering 585 jobs since the start of 2025. Those four sit in Florida, Indiana, South Carolina and Texas, each naming a single site or client.
Of those four, only the Dallas letter has its reason on record. ABM Texas General Services told the Texas Workforce Commission in late December 2025 that 211 team members would be laid off effective March 12, 2026, calling it an unforeseeable business circumstance because SMU had decided to give its janitorial work to another vendor. It's the biggest of the four. That phrase comes from the federal WARN rules. When an exception applies, notice can fall below 60 days, but the employer carries the burden of proof, owes as much notice as is practicable and has to state briefly why the period was cut, and a principal client's sudden and unexpected termination of a major contract is one thing the rule says might qualify. If yours came with less than 60 days, look for that statement. SMU, a private university, had put custodial services out to bid on September 2, 2025, with an award set for December 1, months before ABM's letter.
What ABM workers were offered has changed from site to site. The Dallas site wasn't unionized, and officials said workers would be offered other positions within ABM. At the Orlando airport, ABM's April 2025 letter said the affected workers, mostly drivers, were represented by USWU Local 74 and had no bumping rights. Indianapolis's March 2025 notice answered no to separation benefits and yes to COBRA. In March 2026 SEIU-USWW said more than 100 night janitors lost their jobs when NBCUniversal canceled ABM's contract at three locations, and by the union's account the parties agreed days later to rehire them with back pay. When Delta took Atlanta cabin cleaning from ABM Aviation in 2019, it said current employees would get preferential hiring with the new vendor.
A separate track runs inside ABM itself. In the quarter ended October 31, 2025 it launched a restructuring program to streamline operations and make its support functions more efficient, expecting about $35.0 million a year in savings once fully implemented in 2026. That quarter's charges came to $13.4 million, $10.4 million of it employee severance. By July 31, 2026 cumulative charges had reached $28.0 million, with $8.1 million more in severance booked since November, $18.5 million of program severance by our arithmetic. The same filing tied a $7.5 million drop in corporate pay costs that quarter mainly to reduced headcount from the program. Neither filing gives a job count, and none of the four recent WARN notices links itself to the program on record.
Headcount moved too. ABM reported about 117,000 employees at October 31, 2024 and about 113,000 a year later, 45% of them under local collective bargaining agreements, roughly 4,000 fewer by our arithmetic, a net figure the filings don't split by cause. If an ABM notice is in your hands, set it beside the ones above. Check the separation date against 60 days, see what it says about bumping rights and separation benefits, and ask ABM in writing about openings on other accounts, as Dallas workers were offered. If you're represented, get the notice and any release to your local while there's still time to respond.

What to do after being laid off from ABM
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. ABM's biggest hubs: Texas, Florida, South Carolina, California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what ABM's hub states run: Texas, Florida, South Carolina, California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
ABM layoff and severance questions
Does ABM pay severance when a client contract ends?
For site layoffs there's no standard package on record. The March 2025 Indianapolis notice answered no to separation benefits and yes to COBRA. ABM's filings show severance inside its own restructuring, $18.5 million through July 2026 by our arithmetic, with no per-person terms, and none of it binds what you're offered.
How much notice does ABM get when a client cancels?
For the majority of its contracts, 30 to 90 days, according to ABM's 2025 annual report, which also says most can be canceled by either side without a substantive penalty. Under the federal WARN rule, a principal client's sudden and unexpected termination of a major contract might justify giving workers less than 60 days of notice, and a brief statement of the reason is still owed.
Did ABM lay off corporate staff?
ABM's filings describe a restructuring launched in the quarter ended October 2025 to make its support functions more efficient, with $28.0 million in cumulative charges by July 31, 2026, severance included. Its July 2026 10-Q tied lower corporate pay costs mainly to reduced headcount from the program. Neither filing gives a number of jobs.
How many WARN notices has ABM filed?
Our tracker holds 174 all-time ABM filings, with 4 filings covering 585 jobs since the start of 2025. Those four came from Florida, Indiana, South Carolina and Texas. The largest, 211 jobs in Dallas, came when SMU switched janitorial vendors, and the only 2026 filing covers 122 jobs in North Charleston.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from ABM?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. ABM's biggest U.S. hubs are Texas, Florida, South Carolina, California. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at ABM?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at ABM?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from ABM?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
