ADP layoff history

Two kinds of records exist for ADP, state WARN notices, which name a site and a headcount, and the company-wide charges in ADP's results, which name a program and a dollar figure. The newest notice is a Roseland one. It went up on New Jersey's list in June 2026, covering 76 people effective September 25, and Patch placed the cuts at the headquarters but got no reply when it asked ADP for details. Neither source names a team, a set of titles or a reason, and that silence is hard to plan around. Our tracker holds one filing covering 76 jobs since the start of 2025. Across all time it holds 7.

The dollar figures come from ADP's own releases. Its fiscal 2026 results, out July 29, 2026, listed about $91 million in pre-tax charges for what it calls a business alignment program, plus a gain of about $5 million from partly reversing the workforce optimization initiatives of fiscal 2024 and 2025. Fiscal 2024's results had carried about $42 million in pre-tax charges for workforce optimization. In June 2024 ADP also posted a 93-person Roseland notice, effective September 10. Nothing in the reporting we track pairs either Roseland notice with a named program or attaches a headcount to the 2026 charge.

ADP has booked company-wide charges before. The fourth quarter of fiscal 2016 carried a $48 million pre-tax severance charge for what ADP called a broad-based workforce optimization effort, and the same release introduced a service alignment initiative to simplify its service organization, with $100 million to $125 million in restructuring charges expected through fiscal 2018. Other cuts have hit a single site. In 2019 ADP filed to close its Owings Mills, Maryland office, open since 1998, with 123 layoffs effective September 27, and said in a statement, "We continuously monitor our operations for optimization opportunities." In August 2018, Global Cash Card filed notice of a permanent layoff of 228 workers in Irvine, about ten months after ADP bought the paycard company. ADP had about 57,000 employees in 2019, per Technical.ly, and around 67,000 by Patch's June 2026 count.

In New Jersey, measure any offer against the state's floor first, if your layoff qualifies. New Jersey's statute kicks in on a mass layoff, which it defines as at least 50 people at, or reporting to, one establishment losing their jobs inside a 30-day window. Once it applies, the employer owes each affected worker one week's pay for every complete year of service, figured at your last regular rate or your average over the final three years, whichever is higher, and an employer with at least 100 employees has to give 90 days' notice before the first job ends. Short notice adds four weeks. A bigger ADP package beats the statutory amount. An offer of the same job, or one with equivalent status, pay, benefits and other terms and conditions of employment, in New Jersey within 50 miles doesn't count as a termination, and waiving the statutory money takes sign-off from the labor commissioner or a court. Ask HR, in writing, whether your separation falls under the law and how your figure was built.

If a release asks you to give up federal age-discrimination claims, the law sets minimums. A release tied to a group cut gives you at least 45 days to decide, one outside a group program at least 21, and either way you get 7 days after signing to change your mind and a written instruction to see a lawyer first. In a group cut the employer also has to give you a written breakdown listing everyone chosen by job title and age, along with the ages of the people in the same unit or classification who weren't. Put that breakdown in a spreadsheet before the deadline. The rounds on this page describe past cuts only, and no ADP document or attributed report on record sets individual severance terms. Treat the letter with your name on it as ADP's offer, and where New Jersey's statute applies you're owed the larger of that offer and the statutory amount, so check the arithmetic.

What to do after being laid off from ADP

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. ADP's biggest hubs: New Jersey, California, Maryland. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what ADP's hub states run: New Jersey, California, Maryland, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

ADP layoff and severance questions

Is ADP laying off employees in 2026?

One ADP notice from 2026 is on record. It went up on New Jersey's WARN list in June for 76 people in Roseland, effective September 25, and it's the only 2026 ADP filing in our tracker. ADP's fiscal 2026 results also listed about $91 million in pre-tax charges for a business alignment program, with no headcount or sites attached to it in anything on record.

Does ADP pay severance to laid-off employees?

No ADP document or attributed report on record sets individual severance terms. The closest company-documented figure is the $48 million severance charge ADP booked in fiscal 2016 for a broad-based workforce optimization, which says nothing about any one check, and when ADP announced the Owings Mills closure in 2019 it spoke of transition support and remote work rather than money. In New Jersey, a qualifying mass layoff carries statutory severance of one week of pay for each complete year, and the employer pays that or its own amount if that's larger.

Did ADP have layoffs in 2024?

ADP posted a 93-person Roseland notice to New Jersey's list in June 2024, effective September 10, and its fiscal 2024 results listed about $42 million in pre-tax charges for workforce optimization. Nothing in the reporting we track links the two, and no teams, titles or terms from that year are on record.

How many WARN notices has ADP filed?

Our tracker holds 7 ADP filings in all, one of them dated after the start of 2025. Four are documented beyond the tracker, Roseland in 2026 and 2024 for 76 and 93 people, the 2019 Owings Mills closure of 123, and 228 workers at Global Cash Card in 2018, a company ADP had bought the previous October.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from ADP?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. ADP's biggest U.S. hubs are New Jersey, California, Maryland. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at ADP?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at ADP?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from ADP?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
