Allstate layoff history
Losing an Allstate job is a gut punch, and the company's own record of its cuts was written for shareholders. Among the restructuring programs in Allstate's filings, only the 2020 one comes with a headcount. On September 30, 2020, Allstate said a restructuring plan to lower costs would impact approximately 3,800 employees, primarily in claims, sales, service and support functions. Insurance Journal put that at about eight percent of a 45,780-person workforce. The company expected about $290 million in charges, roughly $210 million of it severance and employee benefits and about $80 million in real estate exit costs from office closures. CEO Tom Wilson said Allstate had expanded transition support, naming prioritized internal hiring, extended medical coverage, expanded retraining support and help in employment searches.
The release tied the cut to price. Improving auto insurance's competitive price position, it said, required cost reductions to maintain margins, and Allstate had merged the Esurance and Allstate brand direct operations. Wilson told Bloomberg, as Insurance Business reported, that the company waited until the economy was starting to pick up and until it had built programs to help people get new jobs, and that while most of the cuts came from the business overhaul, the pandemic's drop in auto accidents also meant it needed less staff. He called the cut a big first step but not the end of Allstate's need to reduce costs, and said that would go on for three or four years. Its 2021 10-K lists the Transformative Growth restructuring as substantially complete as of December 31, 2021, with $238 million spent in 2020.
What came next shows up mostly as accounting. Allstate's filings describe its restructuring programs as generally involving a reduction in staffing levels and, in certain cases, office closures. In 2021 the charge was $170 million, primarily for what the company called the future work environment as it reevaluated its facilities footprint. Fortune reported in 2023 that Allstate had slashed more than half its real estate, selling its Northbrook, Illinois headquarters in 2022, and that 99% of its 54,000 employees worked remotely or hybrid.
Restructuring in 2023 came to $169 million and primarily related to actions to streamline the organization and outsource operations, with $91 million going to an organizational transformation the 10-K called substantially complete by year end. A new phase started in the second quarter of 2024, again covering streamlining and outsourcing, and cost $45 million that year. The 2025 charge, $61 million, was again primarily for streamlining and outsourcing, with $54 million of it employee costs, and by the end of 2025 cumulative severance and relocation expense for active programs stood at $72 million. None of these notes counts the people involved.
Allstate also sold two businesses in 2025, closing the employer voluntary benefits sale on April 1 and the group health sale on July 1. In the letter opening its 2026 proxy statement and 2025 annual report, Wilson described Allstate as having a team of 53,000 employees and credited Transformative Growth with lowering costs. The same letter says AI now codes 34% of Allstate's software and that building ALLIE, its system of AI agents, will require significant business process redesign and development of new AI-enabled jobs. The letter ties none of that to job cuts.
Our WARN tracker holds 23 all-time filings from Allstate and companies it owns, spread across 10 states. The newest is dated 2020, so nothing since the start of 2025 appears. The count takes in companies Allstate owns today whenever they filed, among them a 2018 National General closure in Van Nuys, California and Safe Auto's 2013 notice in Hemingway, South Carolina. The Illinois rows run from a 1988 Northbrook entry through Skokie, Vernon Hills, Woodridge and a Wheeling print center to a 2020 Northbrook entry, and Texas and Georgia each hold older Allstate notices. Illinois's own WARN law reaches employers with at least 75 full-time workers and sets a 60-day notice clock for closings and mass layoffs, and an employer that comes up short is liable to each affected worker for as much as 60 days of back pay and benefits. Whether a particular job loss counts as a covered closing or mass layoff turns on the law's own definitions, so if you think yours might and you got less than 60 days' notice, start with the Illinois Department of Labor's WARN page, which links the complaint form.

What to do after being laid off from Allstate
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Allstate's biggest hubs: Illinois, Texas, Georgia. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Allstate's hub states run: Illinois, Texas, Georgia, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Allstate layoff and severance questions
Is Allstate laying off employees in 2026?
None of the 23 Allstate filings in our WARN tracker is dated 2021 or later, so there's nothing from 2025 or 2026 there. The newest restructuring figures on record come from Allstate's 10-K for 2025, $61 million, primarily for streamlining and outsourcing, $54 million of it employee costs, with no count of roles. The filing adds that continued efficiency work may bring more restructuring charges.
How many jobs did Allstate cut in 2020?
Allstate said on September 30, 2020 that its restructuring plan would impact approximately 3,800 employees, primarily in claims, sales, service and support. Insurance Journal put that at about eight percent of a 45,780-person workforce. The 2021 10-K lists the program's actions as substantially complete as of December 31, 2021.
Does Allstate give severance to laid-off employees?
What Allstate put on record for the 2020 cut was a list of expanded support, prioritized internal hiring, extended medical coverage, retraining and job-search help, with no weeks-of-pay figure, plus about $210 million expected for severance and employee benefits overall. Its 10-K for 2025 shows $54 million in employee costs, severance and relocation across all restructuring. Company totals set nobody's individual terms, so your separation letter is where your own figures live.
Did Allstate outsource jobs?
Its 10-Ks say so in general terms. Restructuring in 2023 primarily related to actions to streamline the organization and outsource operations, a phase begun in the second quarter of 2024 included outsourcing certain aspects of operations, and the 2025 charges carry the same description. None of those notes counts the roles involved.
What happened to Allstate's employer voluntary benefits and group health businesses?
Allstate sold both in 2025. The employer voluntary benefits business, American Heritage Life Insurance Company and American Heritage Service Company, closed on April 1 for $1.9 billion. The group health business, Direct General Life Insurance Company, NSM Sales Corporation and The Association Benefits Solution, closed on July 1 for $1.23 billion. The 10-K for 2025 says Allstate is providing transition services for 24 months from each closing, and it doesn't say what happened to the people in those units.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Allstate?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Allstate's biggest U.S. hubs are Illinois, Texas, Georgia. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Allstate?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Allstate?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Allstate?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
