Laid off from American Airlines.

American cut management and support staff at its Fort Worth headquarters in November 2025 without disclosing a count, and the only filings in our tracker since the start of 2025 come from its regional carrier Piedmont. Union crews were untouched by the corporate round.

American Airlines layoff history

American confirmed the November 2025 reduction in a statement that described a small cut to management and support staff at its Fort Worth headquarters and named no figure at all. Bloomberg reported hundreds of corporate jobs, in mid-management and support positions mostly based at headquarters, citing a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named. A company spokesman confirmed the round to the Dallas Morning News the same day and gave no count either. In the quarter before it, American had booked record revenue of $13.7 billion and a net loss of $114 million.

The round landed on the people without a contract. Reductions ran through mid-level management and non-union support staff, in finance, IT and communications. The scale of the difference between that group and everyone else sits in the company's own annual report, which put about 86% of roughly 139,100 full-time equivalent employees under union representation at the end of 2025. More than 23,000 Transport Workers Union members had ratified a two-year extension effective at the start of 2025 carrying immediate raises of 12 to 15%, and one local president said holding the contract's scope language was among their top priorities.

Read as a signal about the whole company, the numbers run the other way. Group headcount rose from 133,300 at the end of 2024 to 139,100 a year later, 4% growth by the filing's own reckoning, and salaries, wages and benefits were the largest single expense at 38% of operating costs. American mainline employed about 106,000 of that total, with about 33,100 at the wholly-owned regional carriers. Full-year 2025 net income came to $111 million on $54.6 billion of revenue. A company adding staff overall can still remove a specific non-union slice of it, which is what the record here shows.

What has happened since is a fight over leadership rather than over jobs. On 9 February 2026 the flight attendants' union voted unanimously with no confidence in chief executive Robert Isom, the first such vote in its nearly 50-year history, and president Julie Hedrick tied it to profits and operational failures rather than to any cut. The unions had asked management for a turnaround strategy back in October 2025 and said it never arrived. The pilots' union followed in late March, demanding a meeting with the board and saying the request had gone 48 days unanswered. None of this amounts to a layoff announcement, and it says nothing about whether represented jobs are at risk.

Our tracker holds 68 filings all-time under the mainline name and none at all since the start of 2025. The only group filings in that window come from Piedmont Airlines, one of the wholly-owned regionals alongside Envoy Air and PSA Airlines, covering 61 jobs in Boston in September 2025 and 88 in Onondaga, New York in June 2026. No severance terms for this round appear in the filings or in the reporting we track, so if you were cut on the corporate side, the useful work is your own paperwork rather than the company's silence. Read the dates and terms of anything you were handed before you sign it. If you're represented, check your own collective bargaining agreement and ask your union how displacement works under it.

How American Airlines's layoffs compare to other companies

American's November 2025 round touched management and non-union support staff, while pilots, flight attendants and mechanics sat under collective bargaining agreements. About 86% of the group's employees carried union representation when 2025 closed, so which system governs your exit is settled by your workgroup rather than by the size of the round.

What to do after being laid off from American Airlines

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. American Airlines's biggest hubs: Texas, North Carolina, Arizona. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what American Airlines's hub states run: Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

American Airlines layoff and severance questions

What severance is American Airlines paying in the corporate cuts?

American hasn't published terms for the November 2025 round, and it didn't publish a headcount either. Its 2025 annual report quantifies no severance or restructuring charge for the reduction, and the statement it gave when the round was announced set out no terms. If you were given an agreement, read its dates and terms closely before you sign anything.

Do the American Airlines layoffs affect pilots and flight attendants?

The November 2025 round hit mid-level management and non-union support staff, not union crews. Pilots, flight attendants and mechanics work under collective bargaining agreements, and the conflict that broke out between those unions and management during 2026 has been about profits, operations and leadership rather than about members losing jobs.

Why do Piedmont filings show up under American Airlines?

Piedmont Airlines is one of American's wholly-owned regional carriers, alongside Envoy Air and PSA Airlines, and the group's 2025 annual report counts about 33,100 people at those subsidiaries. Their station-level notices are the only group rows our tracker holds since the start of 2025, while the mainline name has been quiet in it across the same window.

How many jobs did American Airlines cut in November 2025?

The company didn't say. It confirmed the round as a small reduction to management and support staff and gave no number, and Bloomberg reported hundreds of corporate jobs citing a person familiar with the matter. Figures that circulated afterward, including a rumored 500 managers at DFW, come from unverified accounts and posts rather than from the company, and nothing in our tracker corroborates them.

Is American Airlines still cutting jobs in 2026?

Nothing in the reporting we track shows a new mainline round after November 2025. The one 2026 event our tracker holds is a Piedmont Airlines notice covering 88 jobs in Onondaga, New York, filed in June 2026. Group headcount was still climbing across 2025, reaching about 139,100 at year end.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from American Airlines?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. American Airlines's biggest U.S. hubs are Texas, North Carolina, Arizona. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at American Airlines?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at American Airlines?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from American Airlines?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
