Apple cut a handful of Fitness+ audio jobs, Bloomberg reported in September 2026
In September 2026, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple had laid off a handful of people working on Fitness+ audio features such as Time to Walk and Time to Run, and that new releases of those sessions were to drop in frequency rather than stop completely. A month earlier, Apple's California notices listed 147 jobs at Apple Park and two Sunnyvale sites.

If Apple cut your job, there may be no announcement to point to, and a state filing may be the only public trace. Our WARN filing tracker holds 5 filings covering 282 jobs since the start of 2025. Every one is in California or Maryland, and the biggest is a 79-job notice for Cupertino. It was one of three Apple sent California in August 2026, listing 147 permanent eliminations, 79 at One Apple Park Way, 40 at 605 W. Maude Avenue and 28 at 599 N. Mathilda Avenue in Sunnyvale, with separations set for October 19 and 20. The titles included software development engineers, machine-learning roles, computer-vision engineers, engineering program managers and AR/VR developers, none union-represented. TheStreet read the notice as part of a round Bloomberg put at more than 200 jobs.
The count on an Apple notice can include people Apple has offered to keep. When Apple told Hawaii in November 2023 it would close its Royal Hawaiian store on January 20, 2024, its letter counted about 57 full and part-time employees, 14 of them Specialists and 7 Geniuses, and said every one was being offered a job at Apple's two other Honolulu stores. Separation turned permanent only for those who declined or didn't land another Apple role by closing day, and anyone on a non-military leave was to be terminated at closing or when the leave ended, whichever came later, and no more than twelve weeks after closing. Escondido looked similar on paper in 2026. Apple's April 23 notice counted 57 jobs there while Apple said its North County team would be able to continue their roles at nearby stores. If your name is on a count like that, get the offer, the store and the accept-by date in writing.
Apple's statements have pointed people inward before pointing them out. After the August 2026 cuts it said it would support affected staff, including opportunities to apply for other roles at Apple. In the November 2025 sales cuts, Bloomberg said the government sales team was among the biggest groups hit, and people reportedly had until January 20, 2026 to secure a new position inside Apple or leave with a severance package. Some of those workers told Bloomberg, in unverified accounts, that the real driver was a shift toward third-party resellers, which isn't the reason Apple gave. The only severance figures on record date to January 2024, when Apple broke up a 121-person Siri team in San Diego and offered its members roles in Austin. Bloomberg reported a $7,000 relocation stipend, or four weeks of severance plus a week per year worked and six months of health coverage. Treat that as one 2024 data point, and weigh what's worth negotiating before you sign against the paper you're handed.
Towson's closing ran through a union contract. Apple Towson Town Center became the first unionized Apple Store in June 2022, and Apple said its staff could apply for open roles under the collective bargaining agreement. Apple said that agreement only requires transfers within 50 miles, with severance otherwise, while the IAM said union members were denied the transfers the other two stores got. The closure drew an unfair labor practice complaint from the union, which Apple disputed, and nine members of Maryland's congressional delegation wrote to Apple about severance, placement and transfers. A California notice filed in 2026 carries more than a count. When section 1401 of the state labor code requires an employer to give notice, it has since January 1 required that notice to say whether the employer plans to coordinate services such as a rapid response orientation through the local workforce development board, and to include a working email and phone number for that board, CalFresh food assistance details and an employer contact, with the notice due 60 days before a mass layoff, relocation or termination at a covered establishment takes effect. Copy the board's contact off yours before your last day, and use California's unemployment page for the claim itself. For scale, Apple counted about 166,000 full-time employees in September 2025, up from 164,000 a year earlier.

What severance does Apple give laid-off employees?
Nothing on record sets out a company-wide Apple severance formula. The only reported figures are round-specific, from 2024 in San Diego, where Bloomberg reported four weeks of pay plus a week per year worked and six months of health coverage for people who took layoff over a move to Austin. For the 2025 sales cuts, the reporting names a severance package but not its size.
Why did Apple decide to close its Towson store?
Apple cited the departure of several retailers and declining conditions at Towson Town Center, the reason it gave for Trumbull and North County too. Towson was the first Apple Store to unionize, in June 2022. The IAM called Apple's claim that the union contract prevents relocation false, and the closure drew an unfair labor practice complaint that Apple disputed.
Did Apple lay off Vision Pro and Siri employees?
Bloomberg reported that it did. In August 2026 it reported around 100 cuts in the Vision Pro group, where a gaming team was largely shut down and Immersive Video scaled back, and around 100 across Siri and software. Bloomberg tied the Siri cuts to Siri AI's rebuilt architecture, which changed the expertise the team needed. Apple said the change would impact a limited number of existing roles.
Can laid-off Apple employees apply for other jobs at Apple?
Apple has said so in the rounds it described, from the 2025 sales cuts to its August 2026 statement, and its 2023 Hawaii notice offered all 57 store workers jobs at two other Honolulu stores. Two of them carried dates. The Hawaii separations turned permanent for anyone without another Apple role by January 20, 2024, and the sales deadline was January 20, 2026.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Apple?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Apple's biggest U.S. hubs are California, Maryland. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Apple?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Apple?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Apple?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
