Applied Materials has cut jobs as the economy sank and after a record quarter. In 2025 it said automation and geographic shifts had changed the skills it needs, and the people let go were leaving a company that said it was preparing to grow.

The most recent Applied Materials layoff we've found
Applied was still working through the cost of its October 2025 cut in mid-2026. The plan's reserve fell from $165 million on October 26, 2025 to $39 million by January 25 and $12 million on July 26, 2026, Applied's July 2026 quarterly report shows.
What Applied Materials layoffs have meant for employees
Applied built the 2025 cut to reach every level of the company. Gary Dickerson's email described one coordinated workforce action across all levels and groups, drawn from strategic and operational plans that many groups had been working on, and the California list that SFGATE read named engineers, technicians, financial analysts, legal staffers and many managers alongside vice presidents. If you were let go and want to understand why your role was picked, the email ties the action to each group's own plans and says business unit leaders would explain how it affected each team. It's worth asking your former manager or HR what that plan said about your role, and if you're explaining the layoff to recruiters, the company's own filing describes it as a companywide action.
Outside the U.S., the timing of notices varied by country, as Dickerson's email put it, and finishing the plan depended on local legal requirements and consultation with works councils and other employee representatives, according to Applied's 8-K, the same terms its 2008 restructuring filing used when it said changes would vary by country. If you work outside the U.S. and a works council or employee representatives cover your site, you can ask them what they were told about your group's timing. In Israel, Globes reported the cut reaching Applied's development and manufacturing center, with the layoffs there estimated in Rehovot.
The money behind the 2025 cut moved fast. The plan's charges came to $181 million in fiscal 2025, $27 million of it asset impairments rather than severance, according to Applied's fiscal 2025 annual report, and about 84% of the reserve was drawn down by January 25, 2026, its July 2026 quarterly report shows. If you were cut with a separation package and part of it hasn't arrived, it's worth asking HR in writing for the payment schedule. If you were offered the transition benefits Dickerson's email described, it's also worth asking whether they included pay, health coverage or help finding work.
If you've spent a long career at Applied in the U.S., its voluntary retirement programs of 2012 and fiscal 2021 are worth knowing about. Both were aimed at longer-serving U.S. employees above an age cutoff, and in 2012 Applied said the take-up would decide how deep its other cuts went, according to its 2012 restructuring filing. In 2021 the payments were made at the time of termination, its fiscal 2021 quarterly report said, so a voluntary exit and its payout arrived together. If you're offered a voluntary package, it's worth asking HR what happens if you say no and whether any severance would be the same either way.
Across the four plans whose filings gave a share of the workforce, Applied's cuts have gotten smaller. Its 2008 plan and the one in its November 2009 filing each reached into double digits, the 2012 plan stayed in single digits, and the 2025 plan's share was the smallest of those four. None of that softens it if your job was in the 2025 round, because a smaller share still means the whole job for the person in it.
If you were let go in California, the claim process and benefit rules are on our California unemployment benefits page, and California layoffs sets Applied's 2025 notices beside other employers' cuts. What to do if you're laid off from Applied Materials
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Applied Materials's biggest hubs: California, Texas. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Applied Materials's hub states run: California, Texas, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
