Laid off from BAE Systems.

Several of BAE Systems' reported U.S. layoffs followed shifts in its work, from Navy repair demand at its shipyards to federal contracts that passed to other firms. In 2016 Norfolk cut fewer people than it had planned, and some of its staff took temporary posts at West Coast yards.

  • About 650 Norfolk shipyard layoffs announced in September 2015, from about 1,500 workers
  • About 325 Pearl Harbor jobs in BAE's 2019 exit from Navy surface ship repair

The most recent BAE Systems layoff we've found

BAE began cutting nearly 200 jobs at its Jacksonville ship repair yard in June 2026, close to a quarter of the yard's 900-person workforce, the company confirmed to News4JAX, saying it was matching staff to the work it expected for the rest of the year.

What BAE Systems layoffs have meant for employees

Several of the yard cuts on record came with BAE's own explanation in terms of the work it held. When BAE left Navy surface repair at Pearl Harbor, officials said in an Associated Press report that the Navy's new fixed-price contracts kept it from bidding on smaller work, and in June 2026 BAE told News4JAX it was sizing Jacksonville to the year's remaining workload. In these reported cases, BAE linked staffing to the work it had on hand.

At BAE's yards, the count on a notice and the number who finally left haven't always matched. Virginia's notice for Norfolk in September 2015, logged in our WARN tracker, listed 1,512 jobs on the day an AP story in Navy Times quoted BAE putting the layoffs at about 650 at a yard of about 1,500. The next March Norfolk laid off 170 against a plan of as many as 265 and extended notices for more of its own workers, WorkBoat reported. If you're holding a notice from a BAE yard, a dated copy of each letter is worth keeping beside any revision, because both the count and the date have changed at these yards before.

Jacksonville's June count came with a gap. BAE gave News4JAX a figure of fewer than 200 for that month and didn't say whether temporary workers were part of it, while the station's information put the possible total as high as 400 with temporary workers included. BAE added that it would keep the level of skills it needed for Navy and customer ship maintenance as the reduction unfolded. If you were at the yard on a temporary basis, the company's figure may not settle whether your job was among the cuts.

Away from the yards, the notices on record put the government contract first. BAE's May 2024 Hawaii letter said it had learned the NCTAMS contract had gone to another contractor, named IBEW Local 1260 as the workers' union and said no bumping rights applied. In Vienna in 2026 a spokesperson described the jobs as positions tied directly to the contract that ended, and BAE's letter said it was still waiting on a final transition date, Virginia Business reported. Virginia's WARN notice record for a 2024 McLean notice says it cost no jobs, because every employee on it would follow the contract. If your BAE job is tied to a contract that's ending, your last day can move with the customer's transition, so the date on a first letter may not be the one that holds.

When BAE has described severance, it has come bundled with other help. In 2013 officials listed health benefits and outplacement assistance beside the severance itself, The Nashua Telegraph reported, and BAE's 2023 stock purchase agreement with Ball paired severance pay with benefits and promised transferred staff credit for their Ball service toward eligibility, paid time off and vesting, while saying employees gain no rights from it. If you're weighing a BAE package, those parts are worth setting beside the pay, since the company's 2013 statement put all three together.

BAE's 2026 notices went to Maryland and Virginia and its June cuts to Florida, and BizWest reported in June 2024 that its Broomfield-based Space & Mission Systems had recently laid off an unspecified number of Colorado workers. For a job in one of those states, or in California, where BAE ran a repair yard in 2015, our pages on Virginia unemployment benefits, Maryland's, Florida's, Colorado's and California's set out each state's own rules for filing a claim.

Norfolk laid off 170, fewer than the as many as 265 it had planned, after moving some staff to temporary assignments at West Coast yards, WorkBoat reported. Jacksonville, warned in January of up to 300 layoffs, had released 30 by March 18 and extended 180 notices.

  • September 2015, Norfolk shipyard layoffs

  • January 2013, Electronic Systems cut of 300 jobs

BAE's Nashua-based Electronic Systems sector said it would cut 300 jobs, most in southern New Hampshire and the rest at sites including Wayne, New Jersey, and Endicott, New York, The Nashua Telegraph reported.

What to do if you're laid off from BAE Systems

BAE Systems layoff and severance questions

What severance has BAE Systems given laid-off employees?

In 2013 BAE officials said Electronic Systems staff being laid off would get a severance package, health benefits and outplacement assistance in line with company policy, The Nashua Telegraph reported. For Ball Aerospace staff, BAE agreed in its 2023 stock purchase agreement to provide anyone let go in the first year after closing severance pay and benefits no less favorable than those under Ball's applicable plan just before closing, though the agreement says employees gain no rights from it.

Can laid-off BAE Systems workers move to another BAE site?

BAE has offered or pursued other work around some announced cuts. In 2016 it placed some Norfolk shipyard employees in temporary jobs at West Coast yards, and the yard's March layoffs came in below plan, WorkBoat reported. In 2018 Professional Mariner reported that Mobile workers could apply for BAE's openings, with a spokesman saying it was hiring at Norfolk and San Diego, and after the 2026 Vienna notice a spokesperson said BAE was working, where possible, to move those staff into other local roles, Virginia Business reported.

How many WARN notices has BAE Systems filed in 2026?

Two 2026 notices, covering 174 jobs, sit in our WARN tracker, one at Annapolis Junction, Maryland, dated January 2 and one in Vienna, Virginia, dated March 19. Neither covers June's Jacksonville cuts, and no Florida notice for them is in the tracker, though its Florida records run into August.
