Laid off from Barclays.

Barclays said the work would carry on elsewhere in each US closing on record since 2016, leaving staff to learn whether their jobs would follow. Whippany, New Jersey, the campus Barclays picked for Wilmington's jobs, has been on the state's layoff list every year since 2024.

What we know about Barclays severance and layoffs

  • About 5,000 jobs in Barclays' worldwide 2026 cut plan, roughly 5% of its workforce
  • 605 jobs on six Whippany, New Jersey notices, February 2024 to August 2026
  • 252 employees in the letter telling Ohio the Cincinnati call center would close
  • 227 people at Barclaycard's Wilton, Maine center when its closing was announced in 2019

The most recent Barclays layoff we've found

As of October 2026, Barclays was planning to cut around 5,000 jobs by year's end, DIGIT reported, and around 1,000 roles had already gone.

What Barclays layoffs have meant for employees

If your Barclays site is closing, where the work goes and whether you can go with it are two separate questions. McKinney's technology work was to move to Britain, India and other American sites, Community Impact reported, and Wilton's customer service work to Ohio, Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware under what Barclays called a "global location strategy," the Daily Bulldog reported. In 2024 the bank told WKRC that Cincinnati's call center work would move to "our other operations centers." Those statements are about the work. What the people doing it were offered has differed from one site to the next.

Wilmington and Cincinnati show how far apart those offers have been. In the 2019 move, relocation assistance was on offer for those who decided to go and severance and outplacement support for those who chose to stay, NJBIZ reported. Barclays' 2024 letter to Ohio said Cincinnati employees "will not be entitled to transfer, reassignment, or bumping rights." Those two documents come from one bank five years apart, and the second reached people working from home, since the center had shifted to remote work in the pandemic, a former employee told WKRC. If Barclays offers you a move, you could run the cost of relocating against any severance offered instead, since the two were alternatives in 2019.

Whippany is where the Wilmington jobs were headed, and it has since become a source of cuts in its own right. The campus, opened in 2018, was a hub for the Chief Operating Office and other functional teams supporting operations throughout the Americas, Morris Focus wrote in 2025. Across our WARN tracker and New Jersey's yearly list for 2025, six Whippany notices come to 605 jobs. Each one after the first lists fewer than 100, so any single notice could pass for a small trim while the total climbed. The state's list gives a span of dates for some of them. If you work at Whippany and a notice covers your group, the first date printed may not be your date.

Delaware was expected to keep 1,500 Barclays jobs after the move, a Delaware Online count NJBIZ relayed. Barclays' phrase for what followed its US consumer bank cuts in 2023 and 2024 was "transition services," in much the same statement a year apart, as Delaware Live pointed out. NJBIZ's 2019 report shows what the phrase included then, "a full range of transition services including severance and outplacement support." If you've been told you'll get transition services, you could set what you're offered beside that 2019 wording and see how the two compare.

The 2026 plan is a worldwide number, and it can't be read as a local one. Barclays hadn't provided a regional breakdown when DIGIT reported the plan, and neither that report nor New Jersey's list ties a Whippany notice to it. For anyone at a US site, the worldwide count says less about a given office than a state notice naming that office would.

Dates on a state notice and a person's last day can come apart, as one Cincinnati worker told WKRC happened to her in 2024. If your access ends before a date you've been given, you could keep a note of when it happened and who told you what. New Jersey unemployment, Delaware unemployment and Ohio unemployment cover filing in the three states behind these recent cuts.

What to do if you're laid off from Barclays

Barclays layoff and severance questions

Is Barclays laying off employees in 2026?

Yes. Barclays said in October 2026 that about 5% of its global workforce would go by the end of the year, DIGIT reported. In the US, two 2026 filings cover 144 jobs in our WARN tracker.

What severance has Barclays given laid-off employees?

In 2019 Wilton staff were to be offered severance pay, job training funds, laptops and job search help, the Daily Bulldog reported, and Wilmington staff who stayed severance and outplacement support, per NJBIZ. A former Cincinnati employee told WKRC in 2024 she'd been told she would receive a package and hadn't yet. None of those reports gives a weeks-per-year formula, and a 2008 CNBC column put the Lehman deal's severance at 20 percent of the previous year's salary.

Is AI the reason for the Barclays job cuts?

Barclays ties part of them to it. Finance Director Anna Cross said the reductions included "fewer developers as AI makes our people more productive," while chief executive CS Venkatakrishnan called AI "the icing on the cake, not the cake," DIGIT reported. Unite's general secretary, Sharon Graham, said the bank was "using AI as an excuse."

Did Barclays give notice before closing its Cincinnati call center?

Its May 2024 letter told Ohio that separations would begin in July. A former employee told WKRC she had no notice, was locked out of her accounts and was told a day later that she'd been terminated. That's her account, and it doesn't match the letter's schedule.

What happens to Barclays deferred bonuses if you're laid off?

Barclays' 2025 annual filing says that to receive a deferred cash or share award, an individual must have provided service over the vesting period and "been employed on the scheduled vesting date or be considered an eligible leaver." That note doesn't define eligible leaver. If you hold deferred awards and your job ends before a vesting date, your plan rules or award documents would show how those two requirements apply to you.
