Laid off from Barrette Outdoor Living.

Barrette Outdoor Living, the fence and railing maker, has filed layoff notices for single plants in New York, New Jersey and North Carolina since 2025. Each one names Barrette, though its parent, Oldcastle APG, launched a new fence brand in 2025 to replace Barrette's.

What Barrette Outdoor Living layoffs have meant for employees

Barrette's cuts since 2025 haven't been alike. Buffalo's notice took in everyone at the plant, Salisbury's was a permanent downsizing, and South Jersey's first was tied to a single operation. The reasons shifted with the site, too. Buffalo's closing was economic in the words of New York's notice, while the New Jersey cuts came, as WFPG reported, from a decision to phase out its paint line. In North Carolina an Oldcastle APG human resources manager put the reduction down to "revenue decline and economic downturn," and the Charlotte Business Journal listed assemblers, packers and machine and forklift operators among those affected. That matters if you're measuring your own situation against another Barrette plant's, since a closing, a downsizing and a cut tied to one operation aren't the same kind of event.

The paperwork and the press haven't always used the same name. Barrette has belonged to CRH since July 2022, when CRH's announcement said its purchase was complete, and it sits inside CRH's Oldcastle APG business. WIVB called the Buffalo site the Oldcastle APG plant, Atlanta-based Oldcastle sent North Carolina the Salisbury notice, and in January 2025, as Building Products Digest reported, Oldcastle launched Catalyst Fence Solutions to replace the Barrette brand among others. The state filings still carry the Barrette Outdoor Living name, sometimes with "Inc." on the end and sometimes not. If you're tracing one of these filings through our WARN tracker or a state's own list, Barrette Outdoor Living is the name it's filed under, and the tracker's 2016 Georgia layoff sits under Barrette Outdoor Living LLC.

Oldcastle APG bought the Buffalo plant in Lakeside Commerce Park with the rest of CertainTeed's fence, railing and decking assets, and its August 2023 announcement said those assets would augment its Barrette Outdoor Living operations. By the February 2025 closing notice, Barrette Outdoor Living, Inc. was the company on the paperwork. The notice put the plant's whole staff on it, said no union represented them, and named the Buffalo and Erie County Workforce Investment Board as the local workforce board, along with a state rapid response coordinator for the closing. In a statement WIVB carried, Oldcastle said the employees affected were its priority and that it would "continue to work together through the next steps of this process." If you were among those workers, that board is the office New York's own paperwork tied to the layoffs, and New York's weekly benefit amounts and how to file are on New York unemployment benefits.

Egg Harbor City's plant is the former Lenox China plant on Tilton Road in Galloway Township, which Barrette took over in 2014. When the company announced the paint line cuts in 2025, it said assembly and distribution would continue and wouldn't be affected by these cuts, a statement about that round alone. The September 2026 notice for the same operation adds layoffs in December, and neither New Jersey's 2026 list nor WFPG's September 2026 story says which jobs those layoffs cover. If you work at the plant and are weighing an offer elsewhere, the December dates are the plan Barrette filed, which gives you something to set a start date against. The rules New Jersey applies to layoffs like these are set out under New Jersey layoffs, and the state's benefit amounts under New Jersey unemployment benefits.

Salisbury's notice is number 202600042 on North Carolina's 2026 list, where it's entered as a permanent layoff, not a closure, in line with the Charlotte Business Journal's description of a downsizing. If you were on it, the notice number finds the state's own entry, and North Carolina's weekly benefit amounts are on North Carolina unemployment benefits.

Barrette Outdoor Living layoff and severance questions

What severance has Barrette Outdoor Living given laid-off employees?

No severance terms appear in New York's Buffalo notice, in WFPG's Egg Harbor City coverage or in the Charlotte Business Journal's Salisbury report. What the company did say, in April 2025, was that it was working with state, county and local agencies "to provide support and resources to the employees who will be most impacted."

How many Egg Harbor City layoffs has Barrette Outdoor Living announced?

Two Barrette notices on New Jersey's 2025 and 2026 WARN lists cover 179 Egg Harbor City jobs between them, the second for layoffs in December 2026. Both name Egg Harbor City, though WFPG places the plant itself in Galloway Township, on Tilton Road.

Why did Barrette Outdoor Living decide to close its Buffalo plant?

The reason Barrette gave on its New York notice was "Economic." Oldcastle APG, which had bought the plant from CertainTeed in 2023, told WIVB in February 2025 the plant would close over the coming months.

Who owns Barrette Outdoor Living?

CRH does. It completed its purchase of Barrette Outdoor Living, Inc. in July 2022 at an enterprise value of $1.9 billion, according to CRH's announcement, and WFPG described Barrette in September 2026 as a division of Oldcastle APG.

How many Barrette Outdoor Living filings are in the WARN tracker?

Our WARN tracker counts four Barrette filings, two in New Jersey, one in North Carolina and a 2016 layoff in Georgia, with 3 filings covering 272 jobs since the start of 2025. Barrette's February 2025 notice to close the Buffalo plant sits outside it, because the tracker's New York records begin in 2026, and it's on file as New York's own notice.
