Laid off from Battelle.
Battelle's layoffs since 2025 trace to federal work ending or shrinking. Its people at the Army's chemical weapons plants have been given notices in stages as closure work finishes, and the Pacific Northwest lab it runs answered expected federal cuts in 2025 with furloughs, a voluntary separation offer and layoffs.

The most recent Battelle layoff we've found
Battelle's October 2026 Pueblo notice, in Colorado's 2026 WARN list, gives "Completion of PCAPP Project Objectives" as its reason and lists an office admin and a senior research leader beside a technical manager and a demil technician.
What Battelle layoffs have meant for employees
Both plants were built for one job, destroying the chemical weapons stored at their Army depots, and both finished it in 2023. "It was never designed to be a continuing operation," the Blue Grass operator's spokesman said in a story carried by Stars and Stripes. With that mission done, Battelle's Pueblo notices have come in stages rather than all at once, and Colorado's 2026 WARN list ties them to completed project milestones, reaching chemists and technical managers as well as demil technicians. So the end of a Battelle job there has been set by the closure work it supports, one finished piece at a time, more than by any single date for the whole plant.
Both closing teams set up help for the people leaving. Bechtel's project page describes Total Workforce Planning at Pueblo, an initiative to connect plant workers with new jobs and with training for related industries, and at Blue Grass the operator's spokesman described a workforce planning office running job fairs and classes on interviewing and resume writing. If you're with Battelle at either plant, it's worth treating those programs as possible help rather than a sure thing, since neither description says which contractors' staff they take in. If you're trying to find out whether a Battelle notice covered you in Colorado, the state's filings carry its plain name, though one in 2026 went in as Batelle, which matters if you're searching notices by name.
At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the lab called the 2025 voluntary separations part of Battelle's "own operational and personnel decisions," and a spokesperson told the Journal of Business that the October furloughs were Battelle's call as the contractor managing the lab, not the Energy Department's. Battelle's 2025 voluntary program put a short choice to eligible staff, with seven days to apply and an FAQ, as the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business reported it, warning that not volunteering didn't exempt anyone from a later involuntary separation. That left eligible staff deciding whether to leave without knowing whether staying would protect them. Not everyone could take it, since eligibility turned on staffing levels, budget constraints, needed skills and the lab's collective bargaining agreement. If you took that separation and you're considering a job with the Energy Department, the NNSA or a DOE contractor, the program's terms make the start of that employment the date that counts, since the FAQ said becoming employed by one within a year of separating would require repaying the severance.
The PNNL staff named in Battelle's layoff letter were told they had no bumping rights, so seniority couldn't move anyone into a colleague's job, but those who had secured another Battelle position before their separation date weren't laid off, NBC Right Now reported from the letter. If Battelle has given you a separation date, an opening elsewhere in Battelle is worth a look before that day, since in that round a position landed in time kept people on the payroll.
The restructuring on record at Battelle's central Ohio home is older, from 2018, and Battelle tied it to its own business. Battelle officials, WCBE reported, said the organization's bids weren't competitive enough to win public and private contracts, and the cuts fell on management and administrative workers while, as WSYX reported, the nonprofit tried to protect jobs doing direct client work. Battelle employed more than 1,900 people in central Ohio at the time, by WCBE's count. If you work in Columbus, Dublin or West Jefferson, Ohio unemployment benefits covers claiming in the state, as Kentucky unemployment benefits, Washington unemployment benefits and Colorado unemployment benefits do for the plants and the lab.

August and September 2025, PNNL voluntary and involuntary layoffs
PNNL sought up to 90 staff for voluntary layoffs from mid-August, and when too few volunteered, the Journal of Business reported, voluntary and involuntary layoffs followed in September, nearly two dozen in radiation and nuclear national security work.
July 2025 to July 2026, Blue Grass closing notices
Battelle Memorial Institute E3 filed Madison County closure notices for 61 jobs in July 2025 and 1 in October, Kentucky's 2025 WARN workbook shows, and our WARN tracker lists six more from December 2025 to July 2026.
February 2025, Blue Grass plant lab and monitoring staff

What to do if you're laid off from Battelle
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Battelle's biggest hubs: Colorado, Kentucky, Washington, Ohio. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Battelle's hub states run: Colorado, Kentucky, Washington, Ohio, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Battelle layoff and severance questions
What severance has Battelle given laid-off employees?
Laid-off PNNL staff got two weeks' pay in lieu of notice in November 2025, and those signing a Waiver and Release of Claims became eligible for tenure-based severance, per the letter NBC Right Now described. PNNL's August 2025 voluntary program offered a week of pay per full year of continuous service plus a quarter week per extra three months, up to 20 weeks, by the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business's account. No terms for Battelle's plant staff appear in Stars and Stripes, the Kentucky WARN workbook or Colorado's WARN list.
Why is Battelle laying off workers in Pueblo?
The Army's Pueblo chemical weapons plant, PCAPP, entered its closure phase after its last munition was destroyed in June 2023, according to Bechtel's project page, which names Battelle on the team that built and ran it. Battelle's 2026 notices, in Colorado's 2026 WARN list, give completed project milestones there as the reason.
How many people did Battelle lay off at PNNL in 2025?
Hundreds, according to the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business, which reported that the 68 Battelle laid off effective November 18 came on top of furloughs and hundreds of staff cut in voluntary and involuntary layoffs since August. The lab's mid-August call for up to 90 volunteers drew too few, the Journal of Business reported in an earlier story, so involuntary layoffs followed.
What name are Battelle's Blue Grass WARN notices filed under?
Every Battelle notice for Madison County from February 2025 to July 2026 went in as Battelle Memorial Institute E3, the 2025 ones in Kentucky's 2025 WARN workbook and those from December 2025 on in our WARN tracker. Each contractor at the plant filed notices for its own employees, the operator's spokesman said in a story Stars and Stripes ran.
