Laid off from Becton Dickinson.
Becton Dickinson's California layoff notices, filed by BD and its CareFusion Resources subsidiary, have come in pairs, four times from July 2024 to October 2025, each pair with a San Diego row and every notice dated after the layoff it reports. Becton Dickinson layoff history
Losing a job at Becton Dickinson is rough, and piecing together the round you were part of falls mostly to the state WARN lists on this page, which give dates and counts but no unit, titles or reason. BD has 3 filings covering 152 jobs since the start of 2025 in our tracker, and October 2025 accounts for all of them, 86 in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey and two in California, with none dated 2026. All time, the tracker holds 36, counting units BD owns such as CareFusion and C. R. Bard.
In California the notices have come in pairs. WARNTracker's copy of the state's list shows CareFusion Resources, a BD subsidiary, filing for 34 and 83 workers in July 2024, 67 and 116 that September, and 48 and 42 in February 2025, each pair with a San Diego row. BD's own pair followed on October 31, 2025, 59 workers at 3750 Torrey View Court in San Diego and 7 at 10020 Pacific Mesa Boulevard. All eight rows put the layoff date before the notice date, and the February 2025 pair sits outside our tracker's count. If you were on one, compare your letter's dates with California's rule, which generally requires employers of 75 or more laying off 50 or more in a 30-day window to give 60 days' written notice. The Department of Industrial Relations takes reports of possible violations.
Franklin Lakes appears once in our tracker since 2025, 86 workers posted to New Jersey's list in October 2025 with effective dates from October 30. New Jersey's WARN law calls it a mass layoff when 50 or more people lose jobs at one establishment, or while reporting to it, inside 30 days. Employers of 100 or more then owe 90 days' notice and a week's wages for every full year worked, plus four weeks' pay if notice ran short, or their own severance if it's larger. A waiver of the statutory amount isn't effective unless a court or the labor commissioner approves it, so keep that in mind before signing a release.
BD's own filings put a company-wide price on terminations. Employee termination charges ran $117 million, $80 million and $45 million in fiscal 2023, 2024 and 2025, years that end in September, and $64 million for the nine months ending June 2026. BD ties its fiscal 2026 initiatives to organizational realignment related to the Biosciences and Diagnostic Solutions separation and to its Excellence Unleashed strategy, a leaner manufacturing footprint included, and it wrote down $450 million in its fiscal second quarter on committing to exit activities that no longer fit. On the May 2026 call, per The Motley Fool's summary, management put a $200 million cost-out program at $150 million achieved, with the full target expected by year-end 2027.
If you moved with Biosciences or Diagnostic Solutions, your employer changed on February 9, 2026, when BD completed the spin-off and the combination with Waters. BD described itself afterward as having more than 60,000 employees.
Whichever state list your job landed on, use the free help early. California's Rapid Response teams help with job searches and training and explain unemployment insurance, and local AJCC offices offer free support. New Jersey's law requires a covered employer to give the state's response team time on site with the people being let go, so if your site gets a response team session, go.

What to do after being laid off from Becton Dickinson
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Becton Dickinson's biggest hubs: California, New Jersey. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Becton Dickinson's hub states run: California, New Jersey, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Becton Dickinson layoff and severance questions
Is Becton Dickinson laying off employees in 2026?
No BD filing dated 2026 is in our tracker, and the three it holds from 2025 are all October filings. BD's 10-Q does show $64 million in employee termination charges for the nine months ended June 30, 2026, and on the May 2026 call management put the manufacturing network at about 50 sites with further rationalization underway, per The Motley Fool's summary. Neither names a site or a job count.
How many BD jobs were cut in San Diego?
BD's own October 31, 2025 notices covered 59 workers at 3750 Torrey View Court and 7 at 10020 Pacific Mesa Boulevard, per WARNTracker's copy of California's list. Its subsidiary CareFusion Resources filed three earlier pairs between July 2024 and February 2025, each with a San Diego row of 34, 67 or 48 workers.
Does BD pay severance to laid-off employees?
Nothing on record spells out what BD paid in any of these rounds, so your own separation letter holds the number. Where New Jersey's WARN statute applies, it guarantees a week's wages per full year worked and makes a waiver of that amount ineffective unless a court or the labor commissioner approves it.
What happened to BD Biosciences employees in the Waters deal?
BD spun off Biosciences and Diagnostic Solutions and combined the business with Waters on February 9, 2026. Outstanding BD stock awards held by employees who transferred, vested or not, became Waters awards meant to keep the same intrinsic value and general terms. The companies also signed an employee matters agreement, so transferred staff should take pay and benefit questions to Waters HR and ask how that agreement treats them.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Becton Dickinson?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Becton Dickinson's biggest U.S. hubs are California, New Jersey. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Becton Dickinson?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Becton Dickinson?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Becton Dickinson?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
