Laid off from BILL.
BILL, the payments software company called Bill.com until 2023, paired its largest announced cut with a plan to become an AI native company. That 2026 round opened by inviting staff to leave voluntarily, and by that September the company's own count showed it far smaller than in 2025.

The most recent BILL layoff we've found
BILL's count stood at 1,483 employees on September 30, 2026, its October 2026 proxy says, 200 fewer than the 1,683 in its fiscal 2026 10-K. That date closed the quarter by which its May 2026 8-K expected the reduction to be substantially complete.
What BILL layoffs have meant for employees
Adding up BILL's percentages won't tell you how much smaller the company is, because each one was measured against a different workforce. Its own counts are the cleaner gauge. BILL's fiscal 2025 annual report listed 2,364 employees, and its October 2026 proxy listed about 37% fewer, a net figure that takes in hiring and voluntary departures as well as anyone laid off. If you're still there, the line to keep in view is in BILL's fiscal 2026 annual report, which says the company continues to consider actions to improve structural efficiencies in future periods.
BILL's stated case changed each time. René Lacerte's December 2023 email described rightsizing BILL so it could improve profitability without relying on float, the interest it earns on customer funds. His October 2025 memo said earlier work hadn't delivered the results BILL's profitability goals needed. By May 2026 the memo to staff paired a plan to become AI native with a smaller structure, delivered from what he called a position of strength. The May 7 earnings call reported a quarter of GAAP profit, and the 8-K filed that day also announced a board authorization to buy back up to $1.0 billion of stock. That day's news shows a good quarter at BILL didn't rule out a cut.
May's cut looks to have cost more than BILL first said. The company estimated $30 million to $60 million for it, and its fiscal year closed with restructuring charges of $90.9 million. With the October and March charges in its March 2026 10-Q set aside, about $76.6 million remains, past the top of the estimate. Severance and termination benefits were the main piece, and more than $56 million of them hadn't been paid by June 30, so payments were still owed when the fiscal year closed. BILL's goal on the call was $110 million in gross savings a year, with $20 million to $30 million of it going back into the business.
BILL's California notices are filed by BILL Operations, LLC, which matters if you're trying to find your own in our WARN tracker. BILL also has an office in Draper, Utah, and remote staff, with no Utah filing in our tracker. That doesn't clear anyone outside California, because Lacerte said the cut would run across the organization. If your job sat in California, California unemployment benefits covers how a claim works there, and Utah unemployment benefits does that for anyone who worked out of Draper.
May's order of events sets that round apart. René Lacerte's October memo had told affected staff a calendar invitation was coming. May's memo instead opened with a voluntary program on an enhanced package and said BILL would then finalize the rest, so people decided whether to go before that remainder was settled. Two people who left in the same round may not hold the same terms.
None of BILL's employees are represented by a labor union, the proxy says, so a union contract isn't what sets a package here. The 2023 terms are the clearest yardstick you've got, though they were stated for that round alone. If BILL hands you a package, you can set it beside that list piece by piece, the months of pay, the months of healthcare, the bonus share, the vesting cutoff, outplacement and visa help. If you're on an employer-sponsored visa, the 2023 email counted immigration support as part of the package, so a later offer that leaves it out is worth noticing.
A sourced history of BILL layoffs
May 2026, up to 30%, starting with voluntary exits
BILL told staff it would become AI native and cut up to 30%, starting with a voluntary program capped at about 20%, René Lacerte's May 7 memo says. Its 8-K put charges at $30 million to $60 million. A California WARN notice dated June 24, inside the memo's end-of-June window, listed 129 San Jose layoffs.
March 2026, a smaller reduction in force
BILL undertook another reduction in March and booked about $5.0 million in charges, its 10-Q for that quarter says. The fiscal 2026 annual report calls this one smaller.
October 2025, 6% of the workforce
Earlier efforts hadn't reached BILL's profitability goals, René Lacerte's October 15 memo said in announcing the 6% cut. A later 10-Q note put it at $9.3 million. A same-day California notice listed 84 jobs, our WARN tracker shows.
December 2023, 15% and the Sydney office
BILL announced a 15% cut and the closure of its Sydney office, with a minimum of four months' pay and healthcare, its December 2023 email says. A California notice dated December 5 listed 156 jobs, our WARN tracker shows.
What to do if you're laid off from BILL
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. BILL's biggest hubs: California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what BILL's hub states run: California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
BILL layoff and severance questions
How many people has BILL laid off?
BILL's May 2026 8-K and fiscal 2026 annual report size its cuts as shares of the workforce and don't give a head count. Its employee total fell from 2,364 in its fiscal 2025 10-K to 1,483 in its October 2026 proxy, a net drop that also takes in hiring and ordinary departures. Three California notices sit in our WARN tracker, and the two since 2025 cover 213 jobs.
What severance has BILL given laid-off employees?
The fullest terms on record are from 2023, when René Lacerte's December 2023 email said those affected would be eligible for at least four months' pay and healthcare, their individual first-half bonus, vesting through February 2024, outplacement and visa help. His May 2026 memo offered volunteers an enhanced package and named no amounts. BILL's October 2026 proxy discloses about $124,546 for one staff software engineer's voluntary separation and calls it commensurate with similar positions, a single person's figure rather than a rate.
Is Bill.com the same company as BILL?
Yes. Bill.com Holdings, Inc. was renamed BILL Holdings, Inc. in February 2023, its fiscal 2026 10-K says. California's WARN report lists the company's layoffs under a third name, BILL Operations, LLC, at the San Jose address on BILL's SEC filings.
Did BILL cut jobs because of AI?
BILL's CEO announced them together in May 2026. René Lacerte's memo to staff set out an AI native plan next to the reduction and described a flatter, leaner, faster company, and on the May 7 earnings call he said BILL would look across all teams and all levels. BILL's May 2026 8-K frames the same cut around agility, efficiency and greater profitability.
What happens to my stock if I'm laid off from BILL?
In the 2023 round, BILL's December 2023 email said equity would keep vesting through the end of February 2024. BILL's fiscal 2026 annual report reports $15.5 million of accelerated stock-based compensation, a total for all that year's reductions. If a separation agreement reaches you while you hold unvested shares, the 2023 date gives you a concrete point of comparison for its cutoff.
