Laid off from C&S Wholesale Grocers.

At C&S, the decision that closes a warehouse can start with a grocery chain the building supplies. Warehouse crews have faced layoffs after customers' decisions, among them one customer's move to handle its own distribution, and workers in C&S's own grocery stores have seen closing notices too.

The most recent C&S Wholesale Grocers layoff we've found

C&S, part of the investor group that bought Winn-Dixie from Aldi in 2025, proposed on August 13, 2026 to become the chain's majority owner, in a deal the C&S announcement expects to close in early 2027.

What C&S Wholesale Grocers layoffs have meant for employees

C&S took on Bi-Lo's warehouse work in 2005 and Winn-Dixie's in 2013, and the 2013 deal called for Winn-Dixie's distribution staff to become C&S employees "with minimal change to existing associates or their wages and benefits," according to the Jax Daily Record. Running another chain's warehouses ties a C&S job to that chain's plans. Notices for the Mauldin, South Carolina warehouses and the Suffield, Connecticut warehouse in 2021 traced their layoffs to customers' decisions, as the Post and Courier and Hartford Business reported, and the Newburgh, New York closing that year followed a decision by one of C&S's largest customers to handle its own distribution, according to Mid Hudson News. Losing a job over a decision made in another company's office is a rough way to go.

The Baldwin warehouse at 15500 West Beaver Street had been Winn-Dixie's before the 2013 deal. Aldi bought Winn-Dixie's parent in 2024. In 2025, C&S was among the private investors whose purchase of Southeastern Grocers brought about 170 stores back from Aldi, and C&S closed the warehouse that July, the Jax Daily Record reported. The paper added that Aldi plans its own distribution center in the building for 2027, with hundreds of new jobs. If you lost a Baldwin job, that opening is a lead worth watching, since it's the same address and the same kind of work.

C&S finished buying SpartanNash in September 2025, according to its closing release, and its August 2026 Winn-Dixie announcement counted more than 200 corporate-run grocery stores under banners including Family Fare, Martin's Super Markets, D&W Fresh Market and Piggly Wiggly. That puts store staff, and not only warehouse crews, in C&S's layoff record. The pay and severance commitments in the merger agreement ran for one year from the closing, and nothing in that section stopped C&S from changing benefit plans or ending a continuing employee's job. If you're offered severance after coming to C&S through SpartanNash, it's worth asking which plan governs it and whether it credits your SpartanNash years.

The cuts haven't stayed in the warehouses. The January 2025 round Grocery Dive reported fell primarily on customer service representatives and managers, one of them a retail help desk representative at WNY Logistics, a C&S division in Olean, New York, as C&S outsourced certain customer service functions. If you're looking for a filing, C&S's own appear under C&S Wholesale Services, C&S Wholesale Grocers, C&S Family of Companies and GSC Wholesale, and SpartanNash's under SpartanNash, Nash Finch or Caito Foods. The C&S count in our WARN tracker takes in filings by the businesses C&S owns, SpartanNash's from before the 2025 purchase included, and leaves out units C&S sold and independently owned Piggly Wiggly stores.

If a C&S notice names your site, it's worth looking for a job-title list like the one attached to the April 2025 Baldwin letter, which ran from 132 drivers down to a single tire technician, every one with a separation date inside the same 14-day window. Local help can arrive early, too. In Newburgh, the Orange County Partnership's president said Orange Works was already working with people in the building months before the layoff dates, so if your site is closing, it's worth asking whether your area's career center has been brought in. Since 2025, C&S-family filings have come from Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Wisconsin, Michigan and Hawaii, and Florida unemployment benefits, Louisiana unemployment benefits, Texas unemployment benefits and Wisconsin unemployment benefits each explain how a claim is filed in that state.

What to do if you're laid off from C&S Wholesale Grocers

C&S Wholesale Grocers layoff and severance questions

What severance has C&S Wholesale Grocers given laid-off employees?

No severance amount or formula for a C&S warehouse closing appears in the notices and reporting we track. What they show are transfer offers, with the April 2025 Baldwin letter saying some employees may be offered moves to other company locations and a spokeswoman saying all Suffield, Connecticut warehouse employees would be offered opportunities at other C&S sites, according to Hartford Business. If C&S offers you a transfer, it's worth asking what you'd receive if you said no.

What did C&S agree to for SpartanNash employees when it bought the company?

For one year after the deal closed, the merger agreement had C&S keep each continuing SpartanNash employee's base pay from being cut for as long as they stayed employed, provide severance at levels set in the company's disclosure letter, and honor SpartanNash's severance plans by their terms, subject to those plans' amendment, modification or termination provisions. C&S's closing announcement dated the closing September 22, 2025, so that year ran to September 22, 2026. The agreement gives employees no rights to enforce any of it.

How many WARN notices has C&S Wholesale Grocers filed?

Our WARN tracker holds 16 filings under C&S's own names and 33 once SpartanNash, its Nash Finch and Caito units and the other businesses C&S owns are counted, some of them filed before C&S bought those businesses. Since 2025, the C&S-named filings cover 820 jobs, and all of them together cover 976.

Why did C&S close its Baldwin, Florida distribution center?

The closing letter gave no reason. In January 2026, Southeastern Grocers, which ran the Winn-Dixie stores, said in an email the Jax Daily Record quoted that C&S had shared it no longer had the rights to the Baldwin building, and that C&S hadn't supplied Winn-Dixie stores from that warehouse in several months.

Has C&S Wholesale Grocers filed layoff notices in 2026?

Yes. Two filings dated 2026 in our WARN tracker cover 345 jobs, one from C&S Wholesale Services for a site in Hammond, Louisiana and one from SpartanNash, which a C&S release shows C&S finished buying in September 2025, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin.
