Laid off from Cargill.
Cargill's cuts since 2024 have reached Minnesota office staff and workers at plants it decided to close. Where it agreed to sell a plant, many workers were expected to stay on with the buyer, and people leaving have been offered severance, outplacement or a shot at another Cargill job.

The most recent Cargill layoff we've found
Workers at Cargill's Fort Morgan, Colorado beef plant ratified a five-year contract on August 17, 2026, ending a lockout of more than 1,700 employees that began May 20, a day after they rejected a proposed contract, The Colorado Sun reported, with the first workers due back August 24.
What Cargill layoffs have meant for employees
For people tied to Cargill's Wayzata Office Center, the two Minnesota letters read nearly alike. Both said Cargill was "undergoing a business restructuring" that was cutting roles there, both counted workers tied to the office who live elsewhere, and both listed severance pay and outplacement services, according to Reuters' account of the December 2024 letter on The Poultry Site and the October 2025 letter itself. If you lived away from Wayzata but your job was tied to that office, Minnesota's notice counted you. Outplacement sat next to the severance pay in both letters, so if you were in either round, it's one more part of the package to ask about. The October letter added that the restructuring reached "other locations" as well.
At the plants, the paperwork has differed by site. Milwaukee's notice to Wisconsin attached a list giving each affected job title its own separation date, from April 11, 2026 for production roles such as grinder operators to December 31, 2026 for the maintenance supervisor, and promised everyone at least 60 days of working notice, pay or both. If your title is on that list, the date beside it was the date Cargill planned for that job, and because the notice tied the phases to customer and operational needs, it can help to confirm a later date still stands. Dayton's corn mill got far more lead time, since a Cargill spokesperson, quoted by Milling MEA in March 2026, gave the plant at least 20 more months from then, which gave people there time to line up what comes next.
When Cargill has agreed to sell a plant instead of closing it, the question for workers has been whether the buyer would take them on. Under the 2024 deal for the Fresno meat plant, more than 700 of its 880 workers were set to join Central Valley Meat, according to Agriculture Dive, and when Pitman Family Farms agreed in January 2026 to buy Cargill's Shenandoah Valley poultry operations, Dayton, Virginia's town manager told WHSV that, to his understanding, every Cargill employee there would be offered a chance to stay on. If the buyer offers you a job, consider asking it to put the wages, benefits and first day of work on paper while you're still on Cargill's payroll, and to say whether your years at Cargill carry over.
Where the work went has mattered too. Cargill said much of Springdale's turkey production would move to its plants in Missouri and Virginia, according to Talk Business & Politics, and it said Hazleton's cocoa work would go to other North American plants, as Food Business MEA reported, while telling ABC27 it still employed more than 2,900 people across Pennsylvania. If you'd consider following the work, the plants receiving it are the natural places to ask about openings. For those who stayed in Arkansas, Springdale's chamber of commerce said it was matching displaced workers with local employers' openings and working with the state's Rapid Response program.
Cargill's notices don't all carry its plain name. The two records in our WARN tracker with 2025 or 2026 dates went out as Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate in Pennsylvania and Cargill Meat Solutions in Milwaukee, so if you're tracking down your site's filing, the name on it may be a unit's instead of Cargill's own. Our unemployment benefits pages for Minnesota, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, the states where those notices and the Wayzata letters sit, set out each state's claim rules.

What to do if you're laid off from Cargill
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Cargill's biggest hubs: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Texas. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Cargill's hub states run: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Texas, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Cargill layoff and severance questions
What severance has Cargill given laid-off employees?
Cargill's October 2025 letter to Minnesota included severance pay plus outplacement, the Milwaukee notice said workers leaving through the closing would be eligible for a package, and Fresno's laid-off workers kept pay and benefits for 60 more days and could get severance, a spokesperson told Agriculture Dive. None of those three gave an amount or a formula. If Cargill offers you a package, consider asking for the calculation behind it in writing.
Can laid-off Cargill workers transfer to another Cargill plant?
Two Cargill closings on record pointed workers to jobs elsewhere in the company. Milwaukee's 2026 notice to Wisconsin let employees apply for openings at other Cargill sites, and when Cargill said in 2013 it would idle its Plainview, Texas beef plant, the release KCBD published promised help filling open positions at other Cargill locations or with other employers. If another Cargill job is an option for you, it may help to learn how taking it would affect the severance offered to those who leave.
How many WARN notices has Cargill filed?
Thirty Cargill filings, dated from 1991 to February 2026, sit in our WARN tracker, with the 2 dated since the start of 2025 accounting for 323 jobs in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, though Pennsylvania's is an effective date, not a filing date. Adding Minnesota's October 2025 notice for about 80 Wayzata roles brings the count on record to at least 31.
How many jobs did Cargill cut in its 2024 layoffs?
In December 2024 Cargill said it would trim about 5% of its staff, which Reuters put at about 8,000 jobs on more than 160,000 employees, in a report carried by The Poultry Site alongside about 475 Minnesota terminations. Cargill told ABC27 that closing its Hazleton cocoa plant was part of the same effort. Neither account gives a US total for the plan.
