Laid off from Chipotle.
Chipotle's layoffs on record came one decision at a time. It picked California over Denver for its headquarters in 2018, closed a Maine restaurant in 2022 while its crew organized, and trimmed a support center in 2023. Offers ran from a relocation to a few weeks of pay.

The most recent Chipotle layoff we've found
The newest reported cut, in May 2023, took 25 jobs from Chipotle's support center and came with a Monday through Thursday office rule, Restaurant Dive reported. The publication wrote that it appeared unrelated to performance, with net income for the prior quarter at $291.6 million against $158.3 million a year earlier.
What Chipotle layoffs have meant for employees
If you were at Chipotle's Denver headquarters or its New York office in 2018, the move sorted people two ways. Everyone affected was either offered a place in the new organization or offered a severance package, according to the company's 2019 annual report, and a place could mean following the job to Newport Beach. For people offered one, the catch was the address. Newport Beach's median home price ran $1.8 million early that year, more than four times Denver's, according to CoreLogic figures cited by Nation's Restaurant News, and employees were still weighing relocation offers that July, a spokesperson said. Saying yes could keep the paycheck and still cost a household its city.
Across 2018 and 2019 Chipotle booked nearly twice as much in recruitment and relocation costs as in severance and other employee transition costs. Chief executive Brian Niccol had described the move as a way to transform the culture and build a world-class team, the same trade report noted. Severance was booked over each person's required future service period, the stretch people were expected to keep working before they went. If you're offered severance with a stay-until date, it's worth asking in writing what happens to the package, and to any unvested stock awards, if you leave or the job ends sooner.
Technology and human resources titles headed the Denver list, and the Denver and New York functions were split between Newport Beach and Columbus, Ohio, where Chipotle said its accounting office of 90 people was expected to triple. For anyone in a function being folded into another office, that pattern is worth knowing, because a job could move to a new city while the person who held it was let go. If your team's work is being consolidated elsewhere, you can ask whether the role moves with it and what relocation help comes along.
In Augusta, the closing email's terms weren't where things ended. The union's labor board complaint closed with a settlement worth about $240,000 in all by the union's count, each worker's share figured from pay rate, hours and other factors, Restaurant Dive's settlement story said. Chipotle denied wrongdoing and said it settled because fighting the case would have cost more than paying. If your restaurant closes, it's worth keeping the closing email, your schedules and your pay stubs, since those were the numbers Augusta's payments were built on.
If you work in one of the support centers, the 2023 reorganization is the nearest precedent. It followed a review aimed at the company's growth goals and opened new roles in other teams while some were eliminated, Restaurant Dive reported. You can ask whether an open role on a growing team is available to you, and whether moving to it would change your pay or your office.
Nearly all of Chipotle's U.S. workforce, more than 125,000 people at the end of 2025, worked in restaurants, and its 2025 annual report records restaurant closings as a line in a unit table. Our WARN filings tracker holds two Chipotle filings, Denver's and Augusta's, and none for the restaurant closings the company reported for 2018 and 2025. If the restaurant you work in is closing, it's worth asking whether a transfer to a nearby location is on offer and whether your hours and benefits carry over. Augusta's workers had been refused rehiring at other stores until the settlement gave them preferential hiring, so if a transfer is offered, it's worth asking for it in writing.
Your stock and equity
In July 2018 Chipotle changed service requirements on some stock appreciation rights and restricted stock units for about 340 employees in the headquarters move, its third-quarter 2018 10-Q says. If you hold Chipotle awards and your job is cut, you can ask whether the service terms can be adjusted the way they were then.
A sourced history of Chipotle layoffs

July 2022, Augusta, Maine restaurant closed

June 2018, plan to close 55 to 65 restaurants
Chipotle said it would close 55 to 65 restaurants, five of them Pizzeria Locale, per its June 2018 8-K. Its 2018 annual report counts 45 Chipotle and five Pizzeria Locale closings or relocations under the plan.

What to do if you're laid off from Chipotle
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Chipotle's biggest hubs: Colorado, Maine. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Chipotle's hub states run: Colorado, Maine, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Chipotle layoff and severance questions
What severance has Chipotle given laid-off employees?
In the 2018 headquarters move, everyone not kept on was offered a severance package that came with a required service period, Chipotle's 2019 annual report says. Augusta's crew was promised four weeks' severance covering the hours they'd planned to work in 2022, Maine Public reported, and Restaurant Dive's report on the 2023 support-center cut gave no terms. If a severance offer reaches you, it's worth asking how it was figured and what date you're expected to stay until.
How many people did Chipotle lay off when it left Denver?
Chipotle's 2018 state filings covered 399 employees in Denver and 32 in New York, Nation's Restaurant News reported, and some of them were offered relocation to Newport Beach. Because people were still weighing those offers that July, the publication wrote that the number actually laid off in either city was unclear.
Why did Chipotle close its Augusta, Maine restaurant?
Chipotle's closing email cited a lack of managers and available staff, while the union's lawyer called the closing union busting and the union filed a charge with the labor board, Restaurant Dive reported. The dispute ended in a March 2023 settlement paying each worker $5,800 to $21,200, with Chipotle denying wrongdoing, according to Restaurant Dive's settlement report.
What happens to my stock if I'm laid off from Chipotle?
Restricted stock units and stock appreciation rights granted in 2018 generally vested in two equal parts, on the second and third anniversaries of the grant, according to Chipotle's 2018 third-quarter 10-Q. That filing also shows the company expected fewer awards to vest as staff left in the 2018 restructuring. If your job is cut before a vesting date, it's worth asking HR in writing what happens to that portion of the grant.
