Cloudflare layoff history
Losing a job is hard whatever the company says about why, and Cloudflare said a great deal about why. If it cut you in May 2026, you also have something a lot of laid-off people never get, a written record of what you were promised. The company told its global team on May 7 that it was reducing the workforce by more than 1,100 employees, and its next quarterly filing put that at approximately 20% of the company. It published the severance terms in that announcement, which gives you a public baseline to hold your own agreement against, line by line.
Three months later the company attached numbers to it. The filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 estimated the plan at up to $165 million, split into $125 million of cash for severance and employee benefits, $35 million of stock-based compensation and $5 million of other costs, and booked $150.7 million of charges in the quarter. By June 30 the company had paid out $98.6 million of that cash and still carried $22.7 million of accrued severance. Those are company-wide totals, and they say nothing about when any one person's money lands, which is a question only your own agreement and payment schedule answer.
The same filing also shows how each organization's headcount moved year over year. Set the June quarter against the same quarter of 2025 and headcount in the general and administrative organization fell 13%, while sales and marketing rose 4% and research and development rose 5%. Those comparisons carry hiring and attrition inside them as well as the cut, so they show direction rather than who was let go. For that, Matthew Prince gave his own account two weeks after the announcement, writing that the vast majority of the people laid off were "measurers", by which he meant middle management, finance, legal, internal auditing and revenue recognition, and that the builders and sellers stayed. The San Francisco Examiner, reading the California notice behind the single Cloudflare filing in our tracker, reported that its 224 jobs included a chief information officer, a chief cyber solutions officer, six vice presidents, nine directors, the heads of recruitment and 19 systems engineers.
The pay term is where an easy assumption gets expensive. Cloudflare promised the equivalent of full base pay through the end of 2026 and stopped short of saying whether that arrived as continued payroll or as a lump sum, and in California that difference is what the state applies to your unemployment claim. The EDD's own guide says severance pay counts as something other than wages and has no effect on eligibility, while pay that keeps you on the payroll at your regular weekly wage and keeps service credits like vacation and seniority accruing does count as wages for that stretch. So the thing to settle first is which of the two your own agreement describes, and then put that in front of EDD, which is where the timing of your particular claim gets decided. California's final-pay and state WARN rules sit on our California page.
One more piece is worth keeping in your file. The announcement called the decision "not a cost-cutting exercise or an assessment of individuals' performance", and that sentence has practical value, because this company has framed exits the other way before. When about 40 people were dismissed for unspecified performance reasons in January 2024, the chief executive called it performance management rather than a layoff and said such cuts are part of "a normal quarter", while also writing that managers should always be involved and the task shouldn't be outsourced to HR. If your separation paperwork describes your exit in terms the May announcement contradicts, sort that out before you sign it, and keep the public wording for the next time someone asks why you left.

How Cloudflare's layoffs compare to other companies
Cloudflare published its severance terms in the announcement itself and then priced the whole plan in its next quarterly filing, so both what was promised and what it cost sit on the public record. The shape rewards reading as closely as the size, pay set to a fixed calendar date rather than to length of service, and one-year cliffs waived with pro-rated vesting for people short of their first year.
What to do after being laid off from Cloudflare
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Cloudflare's biggest hubs: California, Texas, Washington. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Cloudflare's hub states run: California, Texas, Washington, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Cloudflare layoff and severance questions
What severance is Cloudflare paying in the 2026 layoffs?
Cloudflare published the terms when it announced the cut, the equivalent of full base pay through the end of 2026, healthcare support through year-end for people in the United States, equity vesting through August 15, and one-year cliffs waived with pro-rated vesting. The published term names base pay and says nothing about how commission or bonuses were handled. Your own agreement controls, and it's the document that shows what else yours covered and how the money was structured.
When should Cloudflare employees file for unemployment?
That turns on how your pay was structured, and California draws a sharp line. The state's EDD guide says severance pay isn't wages for unemployment purposes and doesn't affect eligibility, while pay that keeps you on the payroll at your regular weekly wage and keeps service credits like vacation and seniority accruing counts as wages for that period. Cloudflare promised the equivalent of full base pay without naming a mechanism, so work out which structure your agreement describes and take that to EDD instead of assuming the answer either way.
What happens to my Cloudflare equity if I was under the one-year cliff?
The announced package waived the cliff and vested pro-rated equity through August 15 instead of zeroing unvested grants. Confirm in your own agreement which grants that covers and what exercise window follows the vesting date, because the announcement set the date and said nothing about the window.
Were the Cloudflare layoffs about performance?
The company's answer was no, in writing. Its announcement called the decision "not a cost-cutting exercise or an assessment of individuals' performance". That wording is worth keeping, because the same company has described dismissals the other way, calling a January 2024 round performance management rather than a layoff. If your separation paperwork characterizes your exit differently from what the company said in May, raise it before you sign.
How many Cloudflare jobs were cut in California?
Our tracker holds one Cloudflare filing, noticed May 7, 2026 in California and listing 224 jobs, roughly a fifth of the more than 1,100 roles announced globally. Reporting on that notice said the 224 were people based in or reporting into San Francisco, and that the separations ran across a two-week period.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Cloudflare?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Cloudflare's biggest U.S. hubs are California, Texas, Washington. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Cloudflare?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Cloudflare?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Cloudflare?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
