Corning layoff history
If you worked at Corning's distribution center off Alternate U.S. 64 between Rocky Mount and Tarboro, your Corning job was set to end on April 19, 2026, even if the work itself carried on under Ryder. Corning's notice, received by North Carolina on February 19, listed a permanent closure affecting 123 people. Corning told the state it had notified those employees on February 16 and was moving management of the operation to Ryder, and it cited a strategic shift in its business operations. Ryder said it wasn't buying the property, would be a tenant, and expected most of the Corning employees to transition with limited disruption. Moving over beats losing the job outright, but it's still a layoff, with a new employer and new paperwork, and the reporting we track doesn't say what pay or benefits carried across.
If your last Corning check didn't include vacation you'd earned, North Carolina law may still back you, because earned vacation pay, PTO included, can't be forfeited unless the employer has a written forfeiture clause, and even then it depends on the clause's wording and why the job ended. Ask Corning for the written policy and your final balance. Sick days are different, since the state labor department holds that sick leave isn't owed at separation unless the policy or past practice says so. For a Corning 401(k) balance or a coverage end date that doesn't add up, the department sends retirement plan and health coverage questions, COBRA included, to the U.S. Labor Department's Employee Benefits Security Administration.
If Ryder didn't take you on, North Carolina's unemployment program pays up to $350 a week for up to 12 weeks to people who lost their main job without being at fault, and a layoff may qualify. If you're unsure whether you qualify, the state's own advice is to apply anyway. Keeping a claim alive means registering at NCWorks, applying for at least three jobs a week, filing a weekly certification and reporting any wages you earn. Corning's statement on Tarboro also said it was increasing its North Carolina employment by 15 to 20 percent, including a significant expansion of its Hickory optical cable plant, so if staying with Corning matters to you, Hickory is a specific thing to ask its recruiters about.
Outside Tarboro, Corning's cuts on record have come as January trims and single-plant notices. Corning put its January 2023 reduction at 1,500 jobs or fewer, under 2.5% of its workforce, and about 1,000 went worldwide in January 2024. A month later a New York notice put 107 of the 532 jobs at the Erwin plant in Painted Post on the list as one production line closed, with Corning saying the plant would keep running, and by October the state recorded that Corning had kept 36 of those workers, cutting the count to 71. Since the Erwin count moved after the notice went in, anyone told their job is affected by a Corning cut can ask Corning in writing whether their position still is before turning down other work.
Our WARN tracker holds 11 all-time Corning filings and 2 filings covering 203 jobs since the start of 2025, the Tarboro notice and an 80-job Corning Optical Communications notice in Milpitas, California from February 2025. The money shows up only in aggregate. Corning's 10-K lists severance charges of $187 million in 2023, $45 million in 2024 and $26 million in 2025, and 2024 also brought $128 million in write-offs primarily associated with closing a display manufacturing plant it doesn't locate. Over the same stretch, year-end headcount went from 49,800 in 2023 to 56,300 in 2024 and 67,200 in 2025. Those totals set no floor for anyone, and one Corning round's handling doesn't carry into the next, so read your separation letter as if nothing came before it, and check its pay, vacation and coverage end dates against your state's rules before the signing deadline it gives you.

Corning layoff and severance questions
Is Corning closing its Tarboro, NC distribution center?
Corning's own operation there was set to end April 19, 2026, and its notice to North Carolina called that a permanent closure affecting 123 people. The work was moving to Ryder, which said it wasn't buying the property and would be a tenant, and that it expected most of the Corning staff to move over. What pay and benefits carried across isn't in the reporting we track.
Did Corning have layoffs in 2025?
Yes. Our tracker holds 2 filings covering 203 jobs since the start of 2025, and the 2025 one is Corning Optical Communications' February notice for 80 jobs in Milpitas, California. The other is Tarboro in 2026. In July 2025 a spokesperson for Corning's DeKalb plant in St. Lawrence County, New York told a TV station that about 20 layoffs there were needed to keep the facility operating.
How many jobs did Corning cut in 2024?
About 1,000 worldwide in January 2024, around 2% of the workforce, by WENY's account. In February a New York notice listed 107 of the 532 jobs at the Erwin plant in Painted Post as a production line closed, and by October the state recorded that Corning had kept 36 of them, leaving 71. Corning's 10-K also tied $128 million of 2024 write-offs mainly to closing a display manufacturing plant, without saying where.
Does Corning pay severance to laid-off workers?
The rounds listed here have no terms on record. Corning's 10-K shows only company-wide totals, severance charges of $187 million in 2023, $45 million in 2024 and $26 million in 2025, with $25 million still accrued when 2025 closed, expected to be substantially paid within twelve months. Totals like those don't reveal a per-person formula.
How many employees does Corning have?
Corning counted 67,200 employees when 2025 closed, up from 56,300 a year before. Its year-end count had fallen from 57,500 in 2022 to 49,800 in 2023, the year it booked the largest of the three severance charges in its latest 10-K, $187 million.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Corning?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Corning's biggest U.S. hubs are North Carolina, New York, California. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Corning?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Corning?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Corning?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
