Laid off from CoStar Group.

CoStar has cut research jobs in other cities while building up Richmond, Virginia. In 2019 it cut Atlanta researchers and let some apply for new Richmond sales jobs, and in 2023 it moved San Diego research work to its Virginia headquarters. Since 2025 its cuts have reached Richmond itself.

The most recent CoStar Group layoff we've found

Homes.com's inside-sales team went from 660 representatives at the close of 2025 to about 400, CEO Andy Florance said on CoStar's July 28, 2026 earnings call, in remarks Inman covered.

What CoStar Group layoffs have meant for employees

If you work at a CoStar office outside Virginia, the 2019 and 2023 cuts show how a consolidation has gone before. The Atlanta jobs that went in 2019 belonged to Apartments.com researchers who gathered rental listings and posted them free, work CoStar was replacing with salespeople who sell ads on the site, and the new sales jobs sat in Richmond, Bisnow reported. CEO Andy Florance's case for pulling teams together was efficiency, with no reason, as he put it, to keep similar work split between two places. What people were offered differed by round. San Diego's researchers, whose work was consolidated in Virginia in 2023, were offered a move with their roles intact, by CoStar's account to Online Marketplaces. In Atlanta the offer was narrower, a chance for some to apply for the new Richmond sales jobs or other openings, according to Richmond BizSense. Taking a Richmond sales job meant different work in a different city.

Richmond took in the 2019 sales hiring, and since 2025 it's also where the cuts have landed. Both Richmond rounds arrived next to announcements about what CoStar was building, a hiring plan in 2025 and, a day before the 2026 cuts, an AI search assistant for Homes.com, according to Inman. If you're applying inside CoStar after a cut, the 2025 plan named sales and analyst jobs, a different line of work from the listing research and writing that some of those laid off that year had done.

Research and content jobs run through the reports on both Richmond rounds. Some of the people laid off in 2025 had researched and created real estate listings, WTVR reported, and the release that announced the cuts said CoStar saw rapidly growing value in using AI to improve content creation. In February 2026, former Homes.com writers, editors and video editors posted on LinkedIn that they'd lost their jobs, posts Virginia Business gathered, and one wrote that Homes.com had laid off most of the team. Those are employees' own accounts. The release spoke about AI and content creation in general terms, and each post speaks for one person's job, so the two point at the same kind of work without tying AI to any particular role that was cut.

Sales had been the side CoStar added to while it cut research, with Richmond sales hiring in 2019 and a plan for hundreds of Homes.com salespeople in 2025. By July 2026 the Homes.com inside-sales team was smaller while CoStar grew a field team in five cities, a shift Florance, on the call Inman covered, described as keeping the strongest performers. If you're in Homes.com sales, the figures from that call count representatives on the team, which is a different measure from a count of people laid off.

The December 2022 cut came from fitting together two businesses CoStar had bought, Homesnap in 2020 and Homes.com in 2021, and it went after roles CoStar called duplicative while the combined team was set to grow, Inman reported. If your job came to CoStar through a purchase and overlaps work CoStar already does, that round shows how the company handled one overlap, in 2022.

CoStar's Atlanta notices behind the 2019 and 2025 cuts both set separations in stages. The 2019 notice split the Atlanta terminations between two September dates, BizSense reported, and the one behind the 2025 cuts, which listed CoStar's Arlington, Virginia, address as the company's, spread its separations across six months, Georgia's WARN record shows. On a notice like that, colleagues can leave months apart, and if your job was on it, its first date began the group's schedule without necessarily being your own last day. Georgia's rules for an unemployment claim are at Georgia unemployment benefits, and Virginia's are at Virginia unemployment benefits.

What to do if you're laid off from CoStar Group

CoStar Group layoff and severance questions

What severance has CoStar Group given laid-off employees?

Neither the reporting on CoStar's cuts from 2019 through 2026 nor Georgia's record of its 2025 Atlanta reduction spells out a severance amount or the formula behind one. When it cut Homes.com staff in February 2026, CoStar said it would provide resources and assistance to those affected, per WTVR.

Did CoStar file a WARN notice for its layoffs?

In Georgia it did. CoStar Realty Information's notice, as Georgia's WARN record lists it, put 84 jobs at its Atlanta office on Peachtree Road into a permanent reduction starting June 30, 2025, and our WARN tracker holds 3 Georgia rows dated 2025 or later, for 93 jobs in all. Neither Richmond round, in February 2025 or February 2026, appears as a Virginia filing under a CoStar name in the tracker.

Why is CoStar laying off Homes.com employees?

CoStar eliminated certain roles to align the company with its push to deploy advanced AI, a spokesperson told WTVR. The February 2026 cuts came weeks after CoStar, answering hedge fund Third Point, said it would reduce its net investment in Homes.com by $300 million in 2026, Virginia Business reported, and Inman described the layoffs as the start of a series of cost cuts against a backdrop of investor pressure.

Did CoStar cut Homes.com sales jobs?

CoStar's Homes.com inside-sales team shrank by nearly 40 percent by late July 2026, Inman reported, without saying how much of the drop came from layoffs, moves to other roles or people leaving. Separately, CoStar was expanding a field-sales team toward 50 in Washington, D.C., Tampa, Atlanta, Dallas and Chicago, hiring people with more real estate, advertising and business-to-business sales experience, CEO Andy Florance said. He said field sales would spread past those five cities if the teams perform well.
