Laid off from Coursera.

Coursera and Udemy had each cut staff more than once before they merged in May 2026, which makes Udemy's rounds part of Coursera's history. A new workforce reduction followed that July, and by October Coursera said the merger's savings would arrive far ahead of its original schedule.

The most recent Coursera layoff we've found

In October 2026, Coursera's third-quarter release said it expected to reach its $115 million annual run-rate net synergy target by year-end, within eight months of closing the Udemy deal, against an original 24 months. It also reported $21.0 million in merger-related personnel and severance cash paid in the quarter.

What Coursera layoffs have meant for employees

Coursera now answers for Udemy's record as well as its own, because Udemy became a wholly owned subsidiary when the merger closed. The December 2025 merger agreement said that until new benefit plans were set, legacy Coursera employees would stay in Coursera's plans and legacy Udemy employees in Udemy's, so that interim arrangement turned on which side of the deal you were on at closing. It also said each employee of either company at closing would get base pay no lower than before and severance benefits on a qualifying termination for a year, or for as long as they stayed, if shorter. Those severance terms sit in a separate disclosure letter, and the agreement says it gives no right or remedy to any employee.

The July plan is one piece of the merger's cost program. Coursera's July 2026 8-K says the plan covers only its own actions and costs, and that broader efficiency and synergy initiatives may add costs and benefits beyond it. By October, the third-quarter release was describing actions worth more than $150 million in annualized gross cost savings, and it doesn't say how much of that comes from jobs. Neither figure works as a headcount, and reading one into the other would be guesswork.

The filings are clearer on what it cost to keep certain employees and to part with certain others. The June quarter 10-Q records $26.3 million in cash retention agreed with certain employees to support integration, with retention periods vesting in the third and fourth quarters of 2026, and $8.1 million in one-time severance and other benefits for certain departing personnel under change in control and severance agreements. If you signed a retention agreement, its vesting date is worth setting against any outside offer, since the filing describes retention pay that depends on future service.

California notices are site-level snapshots, not global totals. Each one lists a single California address, while the companies described these cuts in global terms. If you worked in another state or abroad, the lack of a notice says little about whether your job was in a round. Timing can also vary by country. The same 8-K says local law and consultation requirements may extend the process beyond 2026 in certain cases, and Coursera's 2022 memo named the UK and Australia as countries requiring a consultation period. If you're in a consultation, your dates may differ from California's.

Udemy's 2024 plan was built around moving work as well as cutting it. Its September 2024 8-K tied the plan to fewer organizational layers, a reworked go-to-market organization and moving certain roles to lower cost locations, and expected about half of the affected roles to be rehired, mainly in lower cost geographies. If you were cut in that round and later saw your old role posted somewhere cheaper, that fits what the filing described.

The two package descriptions on record work best as a checklist. Coursera's 2022 package had the larger base pay and added job placement help through Randstad RiseSmart. Udemy's February 2023 message ran longer on benefits and also named a bonus payout, immigration assistance and partial accelerated vesting. They're dated terms from two rounds at two separate companies. If a package comes your way, setting it beside both lists item by item shows what each one covered and what yours leaves out.

What to do if you're laid off from Coursera

Coursera layoff and severance questions

How many people did Coursera lay off?

Coursera's July 2026 8-K, June quarter 10-Q and October release give no job count for the 2026 plan. Its 2024 10-K note put the October 2024 cut at about 9% of the global workforce. California notices give site-level counts, including 77 jobs in 2022 and 59 in 2026, as our WARN tracker shows.

What severance has Coursera given laid-off employees?

The per-person terms on record date from 2022 and 2023. Coursera's 2022 memo described 4 months of pay, more by role and tenure, up to four months of healthcare by country, and job placement help. Udemy's February 2023 message listed a minimum of 13 weeks, varying by employee and location. Filings on the later rounds, including Udemy's September 2024 8-K, Coursera's 2024 10-K note and its June quarter 10-Q, give totals and no per-person formula, so if you're offered a package now, those terms are only a comparison.

Did Coursera lay off Udemy employees after the merger?

A California notice in Udemy's own name, dated July 14, 2026, lists 28 San Francisco jobs, and Coursera's notice from the same day lists 31 in Mountain View, our WARN tracker shows. Udemy had been a wholly owned Coursera subsidiary since May 11, according to the July 2026 8-K.

What happens to my stock if I'm laid off from Coursera?

Coursera recorded stock compensation reversals from forfeited RSUs and options after its 2022 and 2024 cuts, $5.6 million and $1.6 million, and it didn't expect stock costs from the July 2026 plan to be material. Those are company-wide accounting totals that don't settle what happens to an individual award. Udemy's February 2023 message listed partial accelerated vesting. If you hold unvested awards and you've been given a last day, you could check the next vest date against your award documents and any acceleration terms.

Why did Coursera lay off employees?

The stated reason moved over time. Coursera's 2022 memo cited a deteriorating macroeconomic environment and a need to slow spending, its October 2024 8-K cited aligning costs and staffing with its priorities, and its July 2026 8-K tied the new plan to the Udemy merger and its integration and synergy plans.
