Laid off from Crown Castle.
Crown Castle has told its layoff story mostly to investors, as percentages in securities filings about tower work and fiber work. By 2026 the percentage covered only tower and corporate staff in continuing operations, because people in the fiber business were recorded with the operations being sold.

What Crown Castle layoffs have meant for employees
Crown Castle's percentages don't measure the same people, and that changes how you'd size your own round. The 2023 and 2024 plans counted against total employee headcount in the July 2023 8-K and June 2024 8-K, while the 2026 plan counted a smaller group in the February 2026 8-K. So the 2026 plan can carry a bigger percentage than 2023's and still cover fewer jobs, a few hundred by our arithmetic from the 2025 annual report and the CEO's end point in Broadband Breakfast, against the roughly 750 Wireless Estimator reported. A headline percentage says less about your team than the group named in the filing's own sentence. The annual report counts employees and mentions contingent workers separately, so if you worked on Crown Castle jobs through a contractor, these percentages probably don't include you.
A filing's stated reason doesn't show whose jobs went, either. A permanent reduction in force at 8000 Avalon Blvd in Alpharetta lists attorneys and billing specialists alongside construction managers, a fiber sales managing director and field operations techs, Georgia's entry shows, though it doesn't name a plan. That's one address, with legal, finance, construction and sales work on the same list. If your title sat on a list like that, you could tell a future employer the cut crossed functions, and explaining a layoff goes further into how to say it. If you worked in Georgia or Maryland, the two states with Crown Castle filings in our WARN tracker, Georgia unemployment benefits and Maryland unemployment benefits lay out each state's rules.
People recorded in discontinued operations shouldn't be counted as layoffs just because their business was sold. Crown Castle put about 2,500 of roughly 4,000 employees there at January 31, 2026, the annual report says. The sale and the cuts are still connected, since the CEO tied the planned layoffs to the sale as well as to DISH's default, but the two groups show up differently in the count and in your own records. If you moved with the business, that's a transfer, and it isn't part of the tower and corporate percentage. If you held unvested 401(k) contributions the deal would otherwise have forfeited, the purchase agreement called for Crown Castle to vest them by the closing, subject to applicable law, and a plan statement from around then is one record that would show it.
The February plan had a stated finish, and charges continued past it. Crown Castle expected its actions to wrap up, substantially, by the second quarter of 2026 and payments to finish by the end of the first quarter of 2027, and it still booked $6 million in the third quarter, its October 21 release shows. Charges don't show who left or when, so that figure can't say whether anyone was cut after spring. If you're still there, those dates are the company's February timetable, and the later charge doesn't establish whether a particular role stayed at risk.
Crown Castle reported in February 2026 that it wasn't a party to any collective bargaining agreements, and its 2023 Georgia entry identified no union-represented employees among those affected. Its "severance policy or guidelines," set out in a disclosure schedule and in effect just before the closing, do appear in the purchase agreement, so the company had a written standard at that point. If you worked at or around the Houston headquarters and want the state's side of this, Texas unemployment benefits has the rules.

What to do if you're laid off from Crown Castle
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Crown Castle's biggest hubs: Georgia, Maryland. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Crown Castle's hub states run: Georgia, Maryland, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Crown Castle layoff and severance questions
What severance has Crown Castle given laid-off employees?
No per-person formula or amount appears in the SEC filings and trade reports we track. Crown Castle's estimates are company-wide, mainly severance and other one-time termination benefits, at about $70 million in its July 2023 8-K, about $45 million in its June 2024 8-K and about $20 million in its February 2026 8-K. If you're handed a package and a release, there's more on negotiating severance.
How many people did Crown Castle lay off in 2026?
Crown Castle gave a percentage rather than a count, about a fifth of tower and corporate staff, and its CEO said that would leave about 1,250 full-time employees, Broadband Breakfast reported. It counted about 4,000 people at January 31, 2026 in its 2025 annual report, about 2,500 of them in the business being sold. That leaves about 1,500 and puts the cut at roughly 250 to 300 jobs by our arithmetic.
Did the DISH default cause Crown Castle's 2026 layoffs?
By the company's account, it sped them up and made them bigger. Crown Castle said DISH defaulted on $3.5 billion in payments. The default was speeding up planned layoffs tied to the fiber and small cell sale, Broadband Breakfast reported, and the CEO said the plan had been accelerated and expanded to fit "the removal of all future DISH activity." The plan's stated aim in the February 2026 8-K was the efficiency and effectiveness of the towers business.
What happened to Crown Castle fiber employees after the sale to Zayo?
Zayo bought fiber solutions and an EQT fund bought small cells in an $8.5 billion sale that closed May 1, 2026, the October 21 release says. For staff who stayed with a buyer, the purchase agreement promised 12 months of base pay and target cash incentives no less favorable, ending sooner if employment ended, and, to about May 1, 2027, no less favorable severance for an involuntary termination Crown Castle's policy would have covered. Section 7.9 leaves buyers free to end employment and gives employees no rights or remedies.
Has Crown Castle filed WARN notices?
Yes. Our WARN tracker has two, both from Crown Castle USA Inc. Georgia's covers 81 jobs at Alpharetta with a first separation date of October 24, 2023, and Maryland's June 14, 2024 notice covers 20 jobs at Columbia. The count stands at 0 filings covering 0 jobs since the start of 2025, which doesn't prove no state got a notice for the 2026 plan.
Can I use Crown Castle's Extended Service Separation Program if I'm laid off?
Not under the version effective October 17, 2023. The October 2023 program document excluded involuntary or company-initiated terminations, and it described voluntary exits by employees with at least ten years of employment, at least age 50, and age plus years totaling 70 or more, with notice, written approval of the exit date and a signed release. That text is dated, so it can't show what applies today.
