Cummins layoff history

If you worked at the Whitestown distribution site, the notice gives you dates and little else. Cummins told Indiana in a notice dated May 1, 2026 that it would end the employment of everyone at its Indianapolis RDC site at 4820 S. Indianapolis Road and close the location, consolidating the operation into multiple RDCs. Separations were expected from July 31 through August 31, each date with a 14-day window. Of the 59 jobs, 52 sit in a SHOP group made up mostly of warehouse operators, alongside six OFFC roles and one EXMP role, and none of those employees was represented by a union or had bumping rights.

Cummins said in July 2026 that it employed about 67,400 people worldwide. Our WARN tracker holds 1 filing covering 59 jobs since the start of 2025, which is Whitestown. Cummins's broader cuts show up elsewhere. The 2019 program, announced in November 2019 as markets deteriorated, affected about 2,300 employees through voluntary and involuntary separations. In November 2023 chief executive Jennifer Rumsey said Cummins was offering voluntary retirement and separation to eligible exempt employees in select regions, and in June 2024 a spokeswoman said some employees faced position eliminations across the company, some in Columbus, with no Indiana WARN notice filed that week.

Accelera shows the same gap between dollars and people. In late 2024 Cummins recorded about $7 million in Accelera severance alongside decisions to consolidate some manufacturing and cut investment in certain technologies, joint ventures and markets. A year later it said it intends to stop new commercial electrolyzer activity while fulfilling existing commitments and recorded about $13 million in severance, within $458 million of 2025 Accelera charges. The 10-K note gives dollars and no number of employees.

Every round on this page comes with no terms on record, and the lone severance document in the record is an older copy of the Cummins U.S. Exempt Severance Plan, stating provisions in effect in 2006, with an eligibility change effective April 1, 2015, and covering employees Cummins classified as U.S. exempt. That version treated a reduction in force or a job elimination as qualifying and set severance as salary continuation by service, one month for six months or less up to nine months past 25 years, but only if you stayed until the termination date in your notice, signed a waiver and release on time and left it unrevoked. Participants could request the plan documents in writing, so ask for the current one and check it against your signing deadline. The Whitestown notice sorts jobs into EXMP, OFFC and SHOP groups, and that version covers only exempt staff, so ask HR in writing which plan applies to your classification. Under that version, a denied claim could be appealed in writing within 90 days of the denial notice.

In Indiana, file through Uplink as soon as you become unemployed, with your last employer’s name, address, phone number, employment dates and reason for separation at hand, then file a voucher every week, even while an issue holds up benefits. The Monetary Determination due within 10 business days shows a possible amount without deciding that you qualify, eligibility should follow within 21 business days if nothing gets flagged, and benefits typically run 26 weeks at most. DWD's no-cost Rapid Response services coordinate help around work schedules, useful while you're still working toward an August separation date.

What to do after being laid off from Cummins

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Cummins's biggest hubs: Indiana, Tennessee, South Carolina. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Cummins's hub states run: Indiana, Tennessee, South Carolina, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

Cummins layoff and severance questions

Is Cummins closing its Whitestown, Indiana distribution center?

Its May 1, 2026 WARN notice says so. Cummins said it would end all 59 jobs at its Indianapolis RDC site on South Indianapolis Road and close the location, with separations expected July 31 through August 31, 2026, to consolidate the work into multiple RDCs it didn't name.

Did Cummins lay off 611 workers in Memphis?

Those 611 were FedEx Supply Chain employees at two Memphis facilities running part of Cummins's aftermarket parts distribution, which Cummins was shifting in 2025 to an Indianapolis site run by another logistics firm. FedEx said many of those employees would be eligible for other roles at FedEx.

Does Cummins pay severance to salaried employees it lays off?

Cummins's reported rounds carry no terms on record. An older copy of its U.S. Exempt Severance Plan set exempt employees' severance at one to nine months of salary continuation depending on service, after a signed waiver and release. Ask HR for the version that covers you before relying on those numbers.

Did Cummins have layoffs in 2025?

Two actions on record fall in 2025. Tennessee's memo put 46 Nashville layoffs between January 31 and August 15, 2025, and Cummins booked about $13 million in Accelera severance late that year. Our tracker's only Cummins filing since the start of 2025 is the May 2026 Whitestown notice.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Cummins?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Cummins's biggest U.S. hubs are Indiana, Tennessee, South Carolina. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Cummins?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Cummins?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Cummins?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
