CVS Health layoff history

If CVS Health cut your job, the first useful question is which half of the company you sat in, because the record treats the two halves very differently. When CVS confirmed about 2,900 cuts in October 2024, roughly 1% of its 300,000 employees, it called them primarily corporate and said the reductions would leave front-line jobs in stores, pharmacies and distribution centers alone. A bigger announcement the year before had put 5,000 of the same 300,000 on the list, spanning assistants, data engineers, pharmacists and corporate vice presidents. Both landed on the office layer, and most of what has been filed since has stayed there.

Where those filings landed is less obvious than the state names suggest. Several CVS notices on record group remote employees under the facility or the leader they report to rather than where they live. In August 2023 it filed on almost 770 people in Rhode Island, 198 of whom actually lived there, and on roughly 520 Aetna employees in Hartford, 306 of them Connecticut residents. The October 2025 notice ending the Aetna Medicare Medicaid Program covered 72 people, 44 of them case managers, who all worked from home in Ohio, Michigan or Kentucky and appeared in a Connecticut filing because they reported to a leader at the Hartford facility. February 2026's notice on 313 Aetna Small Group roles listed 17 Connecticut residents. A notice naming a state you have never worked in is often that reporting line showing through.

CVS keeps a severance plan for non-store employees on file with the SEC, and part of it can be read before anyone signs. The plan as amended and restated on March 15, 2026 says the Plan Administrator may increase or decrease the amount, including to zero, and the weekly rate it works from excludes overtime, incentive and bonus pay. It spells out 78 weeks of salary for executive officers and the executive leadership team, with a COBRA subsidy over the same period and six months of outplacement. What it leaves out is the ordinary grade and service schedule, which sits in an appendix that filing doesn't attach, so for everyone below the executive tiers the offer itself and whatever plan materials arrive with it are what can actually be checked. The last version to publish that schedule, filed in September 2023, ran from 2 weeks at the entry tier with no completed years of service up to 26, and sat at 52 and 78 weeks for the two executive tiers.

Money actually booked tells a plainer story. CVS recorded $293 million of severance and employee-related costs tied to corporate workforce optimization in 2024, inside $1.179 billion of restructuring charges for that year, against $507 million in 2023 and none in 2025. No per-person figure has been published, and dividing one aggregate by one headcount would invent a number the filings never state. Payment under the plan runs through a release of claims, with a consideration period and at least seven days to revoke after signing, and lands no later than 60 days after the termination date.

Our own WARN filing tracker holds 46 all-time filings matching CVS, and since the start of 2025 it holds 10 filings covering 1,372 jobs across 5 states, with 2026 accounting for 3 of them covering 380 jobs across 2 states. The largest in that window is 796 jobs at Woonsocket dated January 25, 2025, then 313 in Hartford in February 2026 and 111 at Florham Park in January 2025. Those counts come from the state archives we collect, so a state publishing nothing reads as absent rather than as a zero. New Jersey earns a second look if a filing there names you, because the 2023 version of the severance plan carries a separate appendix for New Jersey WARN events. The store side moved on its own clock, about 900 closures announced in 2021 and 271 more decided in September 2024 for 2025, at a company still reporting approximately 9,000 retail locations and over 300,000 colleagues at the end of 2025.

How CVS Health's layoffs compare to other companies

CVS drew a line in 2024 between the people who wear a name badge and the people who answer email, and almost everything filed since has landed on the second group.

What to do after being laid off from CVS Health

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. CVS Health's biggest hubs: Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what CVS Health's hub states run: Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

CVS Health layoff and severance questions

What severance did CVS pay in its corporate layoffs?

CVS said the roughly 2,900 people cut in October 2024 would get severance pay and benefits including outplacement, and published no amounts. Its 2024 accounts booked $293 million of severance and employee-related costs for corporate workforce optimization, an aggregate that supports no per-person figure. Separately, CVS keeps a severance plan for non-store employees on file with the SEC, restated in March 2026, so it sets out current filed terms rather than what governed that 2024 round. Under it the Plan Administrator may increase or decrease the amount, including to zero, and your own separation agreement decides what you actually get.

Were CVS store and pharmacy jobs affected?

Not in the 2024 corporate round. CVS said that one left front-line jobs in stores, pharmacies and distribution centers out. Retail exposure has come through closures instead, about 900 stores announced in 2021 for 2022 through 2024, and 271 more that CVS decided in September 2024 to close during 2025. The severance plan CVS files with the SEC covers non-store employees, so store staff sit outside it.

Why does my CVS layoff notice name a state I don't live in?

Because several notices on record group remote employees under the facility they report into. The October 2025 Connecticut notice covering 72 people said every one of them worked from home outside Connecticut, in Ohio, Michigan or Kentucky, and got included because they reported to a leader at the Hartford facility. The February 2026 notice covering 313 people listed 17 Connecticut residents. Check which state your own paperwork names before assuming which process applies to you.

How many CVS layoffs show up in the WARN tracker?

Our tracker holds 46 all-time filings matching CVS, 10 of them dated since the start of 2025 and covering 1,372 jobs across 5 states. Three landed in 2026, covering 380 jobs across 2 states. Those counts come from the state archives we collect.

Which CVS businesses have the cuts actually hit?

Two of them carry the layoff rounds on this record. Aetna has taken the recent Hartford filings, seven since October 2024 by the Hartford Business Journal's count, including 313 Small Group roles in February 2026. The corporate layer absorbed the 2023 and 2024 announcements, 5,000 and about 2,900. Retail moved through store closures rather than through those rounds. Caremark, the pharmacy benefit manager, enters here only as executive background, since David Joyner ran it before CVS made him chief executive in October 2024, and nothing in the reporting we track sets out a Caremark round of its own.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from CVS Health?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. CVS Health's biggest U.S. hubs are Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at CVS Health?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at CVS Health?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from CVS Health?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
