Laid off from Dell.
Dell has shed about a tenth of its workforce three years running, often without announcing anything. The layoff you hear about is the exception. The quiet shrink is the rule.

Dell's March 2026 annual report shows a third straight 10% year
The 10-K Dell filed in March 2026 put its workforce at about 97,000 people as of January 30, 2026, down from about 108,000 a year earlier. The filing points to employee reorganizations and limits on external hiring rather than an announced round, and books $569 million in severance charges for the year.

Dell layoff history
The paperwork in your hand may be the only public record that Dell cut your job. Dell's reported headcount fell from about 133,000 at the end of fiscal 2023 to about 97,000 at the end of fiscal 2026, roughly 36,000 fewer people by arithmetic across the two annual reports. For fiscal 2026 there's no announced round in the reporting we track. The filing for that year describes employee reorganizations and limits on external hiring, and books $569 million in severance charges.
Two rounds since 2023 came with company statements. In February 2023 Jeff Clarke told staff that "some members of our team will be leaving the company", in a memo Dell filed with the SEC that named global sales as one of the areas being restructured and gave no number anywhere in its text. The count of about 6,650 people, roughly 5% of the workforce, came from reporting and a company spokesperson the same day. In August 2024 Dell confirmed a go-to-market reorganization on the record and again published no figure.
On severance the record runs thin. Reporting on the August 2024 round put the package at two months of pay plus a week for each year of service, capped at 26 weeks, with a possible partial bonus, and Dell didn't confirm it. Employee accounts from the same week described losing long-term incentives and stock options, and those accounts stay unverified. The filings are firmer about scale than about terms, with $648 million, $693 million and $569 million in severance charges across fiscal 2024, 2025 and 2026, about $1.9 billion in three years, and $136 million still sitting as an accrued liability at the close of fiscal 2026. None of that tells you what your own agreement says, which is the document that governs.
Our tracker holds three Dell filings all time, and none in our tracker since the start of 2025. Silence there means no filing was made, not that nobody was cut. Federal WARN reaches employers of 100 or more and requires 60 calendar days of notice before a plant closing or a mass layoff. The mass layoff test measures job losses at a single site of employment inside any 30-day window, and asks for at least 50 people and at least a third of that site's active staff, or 500 people whatever the share. A reduction spread thin across many offices and many months can miss that test. The filings we track are sorted by state if you want to see what got filed where you worked.
Where you work from has been part of this story for two years. A February 2024 notice classified most staff as hybrid at 39 days in an office each quarter, and about half of US staff reportedly stayed remote anyway. In January 2025 Michael Dell told staff that "starting March 3, all hybrid and remote team members who live near a Dell office will work in the office five days a week" and that the hybrid policy was being retired that day, and Dell declined to release the memo while saying it wasn't challenging reports about it. Employee accounts from June 2024 said staff were told working offsite would be weighed when choosing targets for workforce reductions, and those accounts stay unverified. If any of that describes your classification, put your separation agreement, your last offer letter and any return-to-office notice side by side before you sign, and check your own state unemployment agency's rules before deciding when to file.

How Dell's layoffs compare to other companies
Dell's reported package, when one surfaced at all, sat mid-pack. The distinctive part is how rarely a round is announced relative to how steadily the headcount falls.
What to do after being laid off from Dell
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Dell's biggest hubs: Texas, Massachusetts, California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Dell's hub states run: Texas, Massachusetts, California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Dell layoff and severance questions
What severance has Dell paid?
There are no terms on record from Dell itself. Reporting on the August 2024 round put the package at two months of pay plus a week for each year of service, capped at 26 weeks, with a possible partial bonus, and Dell didn't confirm those terms. What the filings settle is scale rather than terms, with $569 million in severance charges booked in fiscal 2026 and about $1.9 billion across the last three fiscal years by arithmetic on that table. Your own agreement, not this record, decides what you get.
Does Dell announce its layoffs?
Sometimes, and unevenly. February 2023 and August 2024 both came with company statements, while the fiscal 2026 reduction of roughly 11,000 people shows up in the annual report as reorganizations and hiring limits with no round announced at all. The gap between what gets said out loud and what shows up in the filings is the part worth planning around.
Why was there no Dell WARN notice for my layoff?
Federal WARN requires 60 calendar days of notice before a plant closing or a mass layoff. The mass layoff test measures job losses at a single site of employment inside any 30-day window, and asks for at least 50 people and at least a third of that site's active staff, or 500 people whatever the share. Cuts spread across many offices and many months can miss that test. Our tracker holds three Dell filings all time and none since the start of 2025, which records what got filed rather than who got cut.
Does working remotely at Dell affect layoff risk?
Dell hasn't addressed that on the record, so what exists is the policy sequence and what staff said about it. A February 2024 notice classified most people as hybrid at 39 days in an office each quarter, and about half of US staff reportedly stayed remote anyway. In January 2025 Michael Dell told staff the hybrid policy was being retired for anyone living near an office as of March 3, 2025. Employee accounts from June 2024 said staff were told working offsite would be weighed when picking targets for workforce reductions, and those accounts stay unverified.
How many people has Dell laid off since 2023?
No single number covers it, because Dell reports headcount rather than layoffs. The annual reports put the workforce at about 133,000 at the end of fiscal 2023 and about 97,000 at the end of fiscal 2026, a net decline of roughly 36,000 by arithmetic across the two filings. That figure nets hiring, attrition, layoffs and divestitures together, so it can't be turned into a layoff count in either direction.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Dell?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Dell's biggest U.S. hubs are Texas, Massachusetts, California. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Dell?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Dell?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Dell?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
