Dollar Tree layoff history

If you worked in Dollar Tree's Chesapeake tower, the cuts on record came in two small rounds a year apart, and small is no comfort when it's your badge that stops working. In 2023 the company told Retail Dive that fewer than 90 positions were going as it moved its Enterprise Contact Center to an outsourced model, and under a WARN notice Virginia published that April, about 32 people were due to go around June 23, 29 around Aug. 25 and 29 around Oct. 27. In May 2024 it disclosed that 54 Chesapeake-based employees had been laid off, with a spokesperson describing changes to the corporate workforce "through both restructuring and reductions" that came out of the store portfolio optimization.

Dollar Tree said the 2023 group would get severance pay and outplacement services, and that the 2024 group was offered severance pay, a way to keep medical coverage, career resources and the employee assistance program. No dollar figure or weeks-per-year formula is on record for either, and one round's package doesn't bind the next. If the medical piece means COBRA, you can be billed the whole premium, as much as 102% of what the coverage costs the plan, so get the monthly number before electing it. Our severance negotiation article covers what to ask before signing.

The big store closings in this history were Family Dollar's. On March 13, 2024 Dollar Tree said its store portfolio review planned about 600 Family Dollar closings in the first half of fiscal 2024, plus about 370 more Family Dollar stores and 30 Dollar Tree stores over several years at lease end, alongside $594.4 million in charges tied to the review. By WHRO's count, more than 900 Family Dollar stores shut in 2024. In March 2025 Dollar Tree agreed to sell the chain to two private equity funds for $1 billion, and officials didn't say what the sale meant for jobs.

The sale closed in July 2025 at a base price of $1,007.5 million, and Dollar Tree said it expected lower headcount expenses because employees would now be employed by Family Dollar. The annual report adds an 18-month transition services agreement and 57 combination stores converted to Dollar Tree stores. The report dates the closing to July 5, 2025 and names the buyer as 1959 Holdings, and CEO Mike Creedon had said Family Dollar would keep its headquarters in Chesapeake. The record gives no count of the employees who moved and no individual employment details.

The Dollar Tree chain itself has closed stores in small numbers, 72 in fiscal 2025, 71 in fiscal 2024 and 67 in fiscal 2023 by Fast Company's reading of the annual report. The August 27, 2026 release kept about 75 closings and about 400 openings in the fiscal 2026 outlook and put the store count at 9,436 when the quarter ended Aug. 1. It describes a team of more than 150,000 associates, against about 207,500 people in early 2023, when Family Dollar was still part of the company. Our tracker holds 7 Dollar Tree filings across all years and 0 filings covering 0 jobs since the start of 2025, searchable on our WARN filings page.

Virginia claims go through the VEC, which says it's there for people who lost a job through no fault of their own. If you qualify, a new claim filed on or after July 5, 2026 carries a weekly benefit between the $160 minimum and the $478 maximum, with your base-period wages setting the actual amount, and each week you claim needs work search contacts with at least two different employers. The VEC names severance, vacation, holiday and other pay in its list of reasons you might not be paid and may ask about your separation, so keep your package papers close when you file. When the Statement of Wages and Potential Entitlement arrives, check that every employer and wage made it on. The rest is on our Virginia unemployment page.

What to do after being laid off from Dollar Tree

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Dollar Tree's biggest hubs: Virginia. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Dollar Tree's hub states run: Virginia, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

Dollar Tree layoff and severance questions

Did Dollar Tree have layoffs in 2025?

Nothing in the reporting we track shows a Dollar Tree corporate layoff in 2025, and the last headquarters round on record is the 54 Chesapeake employees let go in May 2024. Stores closed in small numbers, 72 in fiscal 2025, and Family Dollar was sold that July. Our tracker holds 0 filings covering 0 jobs since the start of 2025.

How many people did Dollar Tree lay off at its Chesapeake headquarters?

Two rounds with numbers are on record, fewer than 90 contact center positions in 2023 and 54 employees in May 2024. The 2018 move of Family Dollar's support center into Chesapeake came with relocation offers to about 700 associates and no count of jobs cut on record.

What severance did Dollar Tree give laid-off corporate employees?

Dollar Tree said it provided severance pay and outplacement services in 2023 and offered severance pay, continued medical coverage, career resources and employee assistance program access in 2024. The record gives no amounts or formula, and a past package doesn't set the next one, so plan around your own separation papers.

Is Dollar Tree closing stores in 2026?

The fiscal 2026 outlook, repeated in August, called for about 75 closings and about 400 openings, and as of July the stores hadn't been named.

What happened to Family Dollar employees when Dollar Tree sold it?

Dollar Tree's closing announcement in July 2025 said its headcount expenses would drop because employees would now be employed by Family Dollar, and jobs weren't discussed when the sale was announced. 57 combination stores stayed with Dollar Tree and became Dollar Tree stores. No count of the people who moved, and no terms tied to the sale, are on record.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Dollar Tree?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Dollar Tree's biggest U.S. hubs are Virginia. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Dollar Tree?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Dollar Tree?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Dollar Tree?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
