Laid off from E. & J. Gallo Winery.
Gallo bought The Ranch in 2015 and Clos du Bois in 2021, and stopped making wine at both. Most Clos du Bois production went to other Gallo wineries, and in 2026 Gallo twice tied cuts to available capacity. Its stated help has included a chance at another Gallo job.

The most recent E. & J. Gallo Winery layoff we've found
In June 2026 Gallo said it had decided to suspend crush operations at Turner Road in Lodi. TheStreet reported about 20 workers would be laid off and that blending, bottling and distribution would continue at Turner Road East.
What E. & J. Gallo Winery layoffs have meant for employees
Gallo's cuts are easier to track by building than by job title. EDD's WARN report labels The Ranch a permanent closure and the other four February 2026 sites permanent layoffs, so that label tells you whether a notice took in a whole operation or part of one. The jobs crossed departments too. The North Bay Business Journal counted 31 cellar and 13 bottling jobs at The Ranch, kitchen jobs at J Vineyards and quality control at Frei Ranch. Gallo said the layoffs don't "materially impact" tasting rooms in Napa and Sonoma counties and in Paso Robles, yet six tasting room jobs at J and four at Louis M. Martini were among the cuts. If you work front of house, a room staying open doesn't settle your own job.
When Gallo talks about capacity, it means room at its other wineries, and at Clos du Bois that's where the bulk of production went. Time under Gallo hasn't followed one pattern. Clos du Bois went from purchase to layoffs between January and May 2021, while The Ranch, acquired in December 2015, ran just over a decade. Gallo was buying and selling through the same years. It sold its Edna Valley and Wild Horse facilities in 2024, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, and TheStreet said it purchased Four Roses Bourbon for $775 million in early February 2026, the month of The Ranch notices. Deal news hasn't told workers much about any one site.
Gallo used similar language about other jobs in 2021 and 2026. At Clos du Bois it talked about work "both within Gallo as well as externally," the Press Democrat reported, and one laid-off worker put it as being allowed to apply for some internal positions. In February 2026 the wording was "opportunities to explore other roles." Those are invitations to look, and a transfer is something else. If you're weighing an internal role, the commute, the schedule and the pay all belong in that decision.
Gallo Sales workers were pointed somewhere else in 2023. Gallo told Just Drinks it was optimistic most would get to interview with Republic National Distributing, the company taking over its California distribution. By July 2025 that company had announced plans to exit California and cut over 1,700 jobs, the Chronicle reported, and the same EDD report shows a 104-job closure at 30825 Wiegman Road in Hayward, the address on Gallo Sales' 2021 and 2023 notices. If you moved from Gallo Sales to RNDC in Hayward, that closure sits under RNDC's name, outside Gallo's figures.
Some Gallo workers bargain through a union, which gives them a second place to settle terms. UFCW Local 186D says it represents 1,539 Gallo workers throughout California, according to a September 2026 UFCW post. In May 2026, bottling, shipping, receiving and warehouse staff at 4614 W Turner Road in Lodi voted 37 to 4 for the local, in a unit the NLRB docket says left out the cellar and maintenance departments, and a certification of the union followed on May 29. If you're in a Local 186D unit, that post shows what the local has tried in a layoff, working to negotiate severance for members being laid off at G3 Enterprises.
Every Gallo notice we've matched is in California, on four dates since 2021, so California's unemployment benefits and the state's WARN filings are the next stops for anyone from those sites.

What to do if you're laid off from E. & J. Gallo Winery
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. E. & J. Gallo Winery's biggest hubs: California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what E. & J. Gallo Winery's hub states run: California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
E. & J. Gallo Winery layoff and severance questions
Did Gallo lay off workers in 2026?
Yes, The Ranch shuttered in April with 56 people laid off, SFGate reported. February's notices covered 93 jobs in all, with separations planned from mid-April through January 2027, per the North Bay Business Journal, so that figure counts jobs listed, not people already gone. In June Gallo said it would suspend crush at Turner Road in Lodi, and TheStreet put the layoffs there at about 20 workers.
What severance has E. & J. Gallo Winery given laid-off employees?
One laid-off Clos du Bois technician told the Press Democrat he got 16 weeks of severance after eight to nine years, with credit for his Constellation time. In 2000, Gallo Glass based enhanced pension and medical packages on years of service, GlassOnline reported. For the 2026 cuts Gallo named transition packages in a statement to the North Bay Business Journal, and none of these reports gives a formula by pay or tenure.
Why is Gallo closing wineries?
In February 2026 Gallo said the changes were "driven by market dynamics, evolving consumer demand, and available capacity across our wineries," as the North Bay Business Journal quoted it. Its June statement on Lodi named capacity again, per TheStreet. In 2021 it pointed to "changing market dynamics" as it moved production out of Clos du Bois, the Press Democrat reported.
Is G3 Enterprises part of Gallo?
Not legally, SFGate reported in August 2026, saying the Gallo family founded G3 but that it isn't legally related to E. & J. Gallo Winery. A September 2026 UFCW post called it a subsidiary. G3's 66-job Modesto notice stays outside Gallo's figures in our WARN tracker.
How many WARN notices has Gallo filed?
Our WARN tracker shows Gallo notices on four dates, July 2021, January 2023, July 2025 and February 2026. The July 2025 and February 2026 notices make up the 6 filings covering 140 jobs since the start of 2025, all in California. The Clos du Bois and Turner Road cuts don't appear there.
Did Gallo Sales workers get jobs with RNDC?
Gallo Sales said it was optimistic that most employees would get the chance to interview and be offered similar jobs with RNDC, and that they could apply at Gallo, Just Drinks reported. That report gives no count of hires. By July 2025 RNDC had its own plan to leave California, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
