Laid off from Ecolab.

Ecolab hasn't gone a year since 2020 without a restructuring plan running or scheduled, and it expects to finish recording the current plan's costs by the end of 2027. For people there, another reorganization has been a standing possibility for years, and that makes a working life difficult to plan.

Ecolab booked $51.4 million of One Ecolab restructuring charges in the first half of 2026, mostly for severance and professional services, its June-quarter 10-Q shows, and put the plan's expected restructuring cost at $328 million by the end of 2027.

What Ecolab layoffs have meant for employees

Centralizing work has come up in Ecolab announcements more than a decade apart, at very different scales. When it moved to close the Grand Forks office after the Nalco merger, a spokesman said the company was "centralizing administrative functions" and moving that office's duties to other Midwest locations, the Grand Forks Herald reported. In between, its February 2021 8-K pitched a plan to rework Institutional sales and service around the company's digital investments. Then the July 2024 8-K aimed One Ecolab at the functional work done in many countries, gathering it into global centers of excellence. If your job is in sales and service, or in office and functional work, those are the kinds of work these plans have named. One Ecolab has grown since it began, too, and its expected restructuring cost has nearly doubled, by our arithmetic on the 2024 filing and the February 2026 8-K. Neither filing, nor the Star Tribune's story on the launch, gives a count of affected jobs or names a U.S. site. If your team's work could move, it's worth asking your manager whether your role is part of the plan and, if so, where the work would go and when.

These plans haven't been limited to centralizing office work. In the 2023 expansion, headcount reductions were to come from terminations and from leaving certain open positions unfilled, alongside facility closures, Ecolab's February 2023 8-K said, and the 2009 plan also called for fewer plant and distribution center locations, according to the January 2009 8-K. If unfilled openings leave your team covering more work, it can help to keep a running list of what you've taken on, for your next review or for a severance conversation if one comes.

Both closings with job options on record pointed some people toward other Ecolab jobs, in different ways. In Grand Forks the company asked who would relocate to its sites in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois or Indiana, and expected the group allowed to keep working from home to be "most likely a small percentage," the Herald reported. Its layoffs there were to come in rounds starting as soon as January, so if your site is told it's closing, it's worth asking which round you're in and what date goes with it. After the Swisher Hygiene purchase, a spokeswoman said affected workers could apply for other Ecolab positions, per the Star Tribune. If a transfer comes up, it can help to get the city, the pay and the start date in writing while you weigh it. If you're offered severance and a move at the same time, you can ask whether turning the move down would change the severance, and severance negotiation covers what else is worth raising.

If you're looking for a notice that covered your site, you can search our WARN tracker for Ecolab and for Nalco. North Carolina and Illinois are the states behind the two filings on record, and North Carolina layoffs and Illinois layoffs cover each state's notices. For the 3,000 Ecolab workers the Star Tribune counted in Minnesota in 2024, home to the St. Paul-based company, Minnesota unemployment benefits explains how a claim there works.

Working through one Ecolab reorganization after another is hard, even for the people who keep their jobs. With the company expecting One Ecolab's costs by the end of 2027, it can make sense to keep your resume current and your budget realistic now, whether or not your team has heard anything, and if your job does end, how COBRA works is a place to start on health coverage.

Ecolab layoff and severance questions

What severance has Ecolab given laid-off employees?

When Ecolab moved to close its Grand Forks office in 2012, it said the staff there would get severance benefits plus job-search help, according to the Grand Forks Herald. For One Ecolab, the 8-K Ecolab filed in February 2026 expects most restructuring costs to go to severance. Neither the 8-K nor the Herald's report sets out an amount or a formula per person, so if you're offered severance, it's worth asking how yours was figured.

How many WARN notices has Ecolab filed?

Our WARN tracker counts 2 matching filings, but only the newer was filed by Ecolab itself, a Charlotte closing notice that North Carolina's 2016 WARN list dates March 10, 2016 and puts at 60 jobs. The older is a 2001 Illinois filing by Nalco Chemical, which the Grand Forks Herald reported merged with Ecolab in 2011, and the tracker includes filings that companies Ecolab acquired made before the deal. Neither is dated since the start of 2025.

What's Ecolab's One Ecolab plan?

It set out in 2024 to organize Ecolab around customers rather than business lines, which its chief executive summed up as "one customer, one field sales and one company," the Star Tribune reported. On its February 2026 earnings call, Ecolab credited the plan with more than $100 million in savings by the end of 2025, from consolidating functional work into global centers of excellence and deploying agentic AI applications.
