Laid off from Emergent BioSolutions.

Emergent spent 2023 and 2024 backing away from contract drug manufacturing. It closed its Bayview and Rockville plants and sold its Camden plant to a buyer expected to take on its workers. A 2026 plan reached its Gaithersburg headquarters, where most roles slated to go were in research and development.

The most recent Emergent BioSolutions layoff we've found

In August 2026, Emergent announced a plan that, with other cost initiatives, was expected to save about $40 million a year, at about $10 million to $11.5 million in charges that its August 2026 8-K said would mostly be cash severance, transition services and benefits. Emergent was also selling an office building, according to The Banner, as part of the same restructuring.

What Emergent BioSolutions layoffs have meant for employees

Layoffs explain only part of how Emergent got smaller. Some of the people who left its payroll went with businesses it sold. Its 2022 10-K expected about 280 travel health staff to join Bavarian Nordic under the agreement to sell that business, and the divestitures note in its 2025 10-K says the staff of Emergent Protective Products, which leases a plant in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, joined SERB in a July 2024 sale. The 2024 10-K puts that year's decline down to restructurings and two sales together. So the 2024 drop isn't a tally of people laid off, since part of it was staff who left with the Hattiesburg and Camden sales. For the cuts themselves, the plan-by-plan counts in its filings are the closer measure.

The reasons Emergent gave for its cuts differ by kind of site. Its August 2023 release tied the Bayview reduction to a retreat from contract manufacturing and the Canton reduction to changes in government purchases of medical countermeasures. Camden belonged to that same contract business when Emergent agreed to sell it, and the Camden sale announcement described the company streamlining its manufacturing network to Lansing, Michigan and Winnipeg, Canada. Lansing, its anthrax vaccine plant, had its own tie to government buying that year. In March 2024, 130 Lansing workers were furloughed, which Manufacturing Dive put down to a lack of clarity from the U.S. government about the timing and scale of Cyfendus vaccine procurement. A company statement in that report said keeping anthrax manufacturing at Lansing was aligned with preparedness efforts. If you worked at Lansing or Canton, the 2023 Canton cut and the 2024 furlough were both tied, in these sources, to government purchasing.

Lansing's 2016 cuts ran in stages. A voluntary package went out in May at twice what the company normally offered, and by October WSYM-TV reported that 28 people had taken it and 63 more had been told they had at least 30 days left. That offer was for people who chose to leave, which makes it a yardstick for a voluntary package rather than for a layoff notice. If Emergent offers a voluntary package before it names who goes, that Lansing offer is a precedent you can weigh it against. If you're offered a package without transition help, the later announcements are the company's own public commitments to it. Its August 2023 release said Emergent was committed to working with affected employees to help them move to new opportunities, and chief executive Joe Papa said in its May 2024 release that it would provide resources to those affected.

Cuts weren't confined to the plants. Both the 2024 and 2026 plans described reductions across all areas of the company, and the larger of the two May 2024 notices in our WARN tracker was for 154 Gaithersburg jobs. In 2026 a majority of the Gaithersburg roles being eliminated were in research and development, the company's vice president of communications wrote to The Banner, and its August 2026 8-K says the same plan would eliminate the role of the executive who led research and development. The Banner also reported a new growth organization that consolidates research, business development and strategy. Where the 2023 release had named the business Emergent was scaling back, the 2026 filing put the aim in general terms, strengthening its long-term financial position in response to changes in its business. Open jobs were on the list too. Both that plan and the May 2024 one set out to eliminate vacant positions, so if you were counting on moving into an open Emergent role, some of those openings were part of the cuts.

Pages on unemployment claims in Maryland, Michigan and Massachusetts cover the three states where these cuts landed, with Gaithersburg, Baltimore and Rockville in the first, Lansing in the second and Canton in the third.
