Laid off from Emerson.

Both of Emerson's tracker filings since 2025 come from one building north of Charlottesville, the controller business Emerson bought from GE in 2019, cut in 2025 and closing in waves through December 2026. The company's annual reports count far bigger numbers, about 2,100 positions in fiscal 2025 alone, without saying where they were.

Emerson layoff history

A closure that comes in waves is a strange way to lose a job. You know the date, and you spend the weeks before it working next to people whose dates differ from yours. That's what Emerson's recent record looks like. Our tracker holds 2 filings covering 226 jobs since the start of 2025. Each comes from the same address, 2500 Austin Drive in Albemarle County, just north of Charlottesville, and the larger is a 139-job plant closing that Virginia's WARN log dates July 9, 2026. Don't read the 226 as 226 people. Virginia Business reported that the 2026 notice covers workers told in 2025 as well as those told in 2026, so some people may be counted in both filings.

Emerson got the building with the business. In 2019 it closed its purchase of General Electric's Intelligent Platforms unit, a programmable logic controller business based in Charlottesville with about 650 employees worldwide and $210 million in 2017 sales. The first cut came in June 2025. An HR manager's letter, as Virginia Business reported it, said Emerson's business had declined and it would "reduce overhead costs through 'rooftop' consolidation," laying off 87 hourly and salaried workers from December 31, 2025 through about December 31, 2026. The July 2026 notice went further, to a full closure. Spokesperson Jason Hillery tied the closure to folding Intelligent Platforms' products into Emerson's DeltaV platform, which Emerson announced in expanded form in March 2024, and said Emerson plans to sell the building.

The terms on record are thin. Both letters described a severance plan based on each person's length of service, and the 2025 letter promised pay for every hour worked through separation. In 2026 the spokesperson said some people would transfer to other Emerson sites. No dollar figure, formula or transfer count is on record for either round. So ask HR for the plan document itself, and check how it counts service if you came over from GE. If a transfer's on the table, get in writing whether saying no changes your severance before you answer. The 2026 waves fall around the end of September, around Halloween and around the end of December, and the roles run from software engineers to manufacturing operators and support technicians, so confirm your own date instead of your team's.

Charlottesville is all of Emerson's cutting that our tracker can see since 2025, and it's a small slice of what the company reports. The fiscal 2025 10-K lists workforce reductions of about 2,100 positions in 2025, 2,250 in 2024 and 700 in 2023, with 13, 22 and 10 production facilities and sales offices exited and restructuring expense of $136 million, $228 million and $72 million. It frames those costs as yearly work to size the businesses to conditions, from moving facilities to best-cost locations to cutting headcount. Fiscal 2026 ran heavier through June. The June 2026 quarterly filing shows $141 million of restructuring in nine months against $70 million a year earlier, $76 million of it in Final Control, and Emerson said it expected about $185 million for the year, up from the roughly $100 million it expected when fiscal 2025 closed. Emerson counted 71,000 employees at September 30, 2025, 2,000 fewer than a year before.

If your job was in Virginia, a few rules and offices matter. Federal WARN, as the Labor Department summarizes it, generally requires employers with 100 or more workers to give at least 60 calendar days' written notice before a covered plant closing or mass layoff, with copies to the state's dislocated worker unit and the top local elected official. The July notice sits on Virginia's Rapid Response log with notice and impact dates 83 days apart. Rapid Response offers laid-off workers direct services, training and income support. When you file with the VEC, the claim takes effect the Sunday of the week you file, and new claims filed on or after July 5, 2026 pay up to $478 a week. The VEC lists severance pay among the payments that can keep you from getting benefits, so report yours when you file and let the agency sort it out. Our Virginia unemployment guide covers the rest.

What to do after being laid off from Emerson

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Emerson's biggest hubs: Virginia. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Emerson's hub states run: Virginia, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

Emerson layoff and severance questions

Is Emerson closing the Intelligent Platforms plant in Charlottesville?

Yes. Emerson Automation Solutions, also known as Intelligent Platforms, filed a notice dated July 9, 2026 to shut 2500 Austin Drive by year-end 2026, and Virginia logged it as a closure of 139 jobs. The company's spokesperson said some workers would transfer to other Emerson sites and that Emerson plans to sell the building.

How many jobs has Emerson cut?

Company-wide, about 2,100 positions in fiscal 2025 and 2,250 in fiscal 2024, per its 10-K, which doesn't place them. For fiscal 2026 the June quarterly filing gives dollars, $141 million of restructuring in the nine months to June 30, but no position count. Our tracker holds 2 filings covering 226 jobs since the start of 2025, at a single Charlottesville address.

Does Emerson give severance to laid-off employees?

The Charlottesville letters in 2025 and 2026 both described a severance plan based on each employee's length of service, with no amounts attached. Company-wide, Emerson booked $120 million of severance and benefits restructuring expense in fiscal 2025 and $123 million in the nine months to June 30, 2026, company-wide sums that don't describe what any single worker got.

Did Emerson lay off NI employees after buying National Instruments?

Emerson closed the NI deal on October 11, 2023 and now reports it as Test & Measurement. That segment booked $78 million of restructuring in fiscal 2024, $15 million in fiscal 2025 and $14 million in the nine months to June 30, 2026, and NI's fiscal 2024 loss included restructuring among other costs. The filings give no NI position count, and none of the filings in our tracker were made under the NI name.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Emerson?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Emerson's biggest U.S. hubs are Virginia. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Emerson?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Emerson?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Emerson?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
