Fidelity cut about 1,000 tech and product roles in May 2026

Fidelity said in May 2026 that it would end about a thousand jobs, around 1 percent of its people worldwide, as technology and product teams moved onto a new operating model, while Bloomberg reported the count at about 800. The company said at the same time that it planned to hire about 3,300 people during 2026 and to add almost 2,000 early-career workers beyond that, roughly 5,300 new jobs in the pipeline.

Fidelity Investments layoff history

Fidelity told most of the people affected on a Thursday in early May 2026, then said publicly that it would end about a thousand jobs, roughly 1 percent of everyone it employs. Bloomberg put the figure at about 800. The teams involved hold about 25,000 of the roughly 80,000 people who work there, and Fidelity said those 25,000 roles were shifting into an evolved Technology and Product Operating model that took full effect on June 1. A spokesperson described the point as getting the right combination of skills in place, with more room for early career engineering work and fewer management layers, and said AI played no part in this one.

The round before it landed in March 2024, when Fidelity cut about 700 positions, under 1 percent of the roughly 74,000 people it employed at the end of 2023 and notified associates on March 7. The company declined to give a Massachusetts count, saying only that impact was generally proportional to the employees based at each site, which put roughly 55 of its 5,860 Massachusetts workers in the round. RIABiz noted that cost savings weren't offered as the reason, which it called consistent with past practice. Hiring had run hard the other way for years before that, up more than half from 2020 and roughly double the more than 40,000 people Fidelity reported in 2019.

Fidelity's parent, FMR LLC, is a privately owned company. What it files with the SEC under its own identifier are ownership and holdings reports, the quarterly 13F-HR and Schedule 13G and 13D amendments, so none of those filings carries a restructuring charge or a severance accrual for these rounds, and no public-company annual report exists that would. The financial picture comes instead from a report the company publishes on its own, which put 2025 revenue at $37.7 billion, up 15 percent, and operating income at $12.7 billion, up 24 percent. Set against that, no severance term for any round shows up in a document or an attributed report in the reporting we track. The closest thing on record is a set of anonymous job-board posts quoted by RIABiz during the 2024 round, unverified, in which people described silence from their managers and one guessed that the 700 figure had something to do with severance offered. A guess on a message board isn't a term.

The WARN record for this company is close to bare. Across the whole archive our tracker holds a single Fidelity Investments filing, with none in our tracker since the start of 2025 and none in 2026. That one filing is a notice dated February 3, 2017 covering 98 workers at the Grapevine, Texas site, with an August 31 layoff date. Whether a later reduction ever carried a notice duty turns on the size of the event, the site it lands on, and the rules of the state it happens in, none of which our archive resolves. What it records is what employers filed.

If one of these rounds reached you, the agreement in your hand is where the specifics of your own package are written down, because nothing was published to measure them against. The law where you worked, and any benefit plan the agreement points to, can bear on what you're owed alongside it. In Massachusetts, which holds the headquarters and about 6,200 jobs, the state's own WARN page says that, in compliance with the federal WARN Act, employers with 50 or more employees must submit a notice to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development at least 60 days before a layoff or closing. Whether a particular reduction crosses into that duty depends on facts the agency page doesn't settle, so read it against what actually happened where you worked. A state claim there pays about half your average weekly wage, capped at $1,105 a week as of October 5, 2025, for as long as 30 weeks, with the claim year open for 52. When an employer does file a notice, it shows up in our WARN filing tracker.

How Fidelity Investments's layoffs compare to other companies

Fidelity announced this one next to thousands of planned hires and called it an organizational transition rather than a cost-cutting exercise. No severance term is on record for it, or for the two reductions before it, in the reporting we track. FMR LLC is privately held, and what it files with the SEC are ownership and holdings reports, so none of the filings we read carries a restructuring or severance charge for any of these rounds.

What to do after being laid off from Fidelity Investments

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Fidelity Investments's biggest hubs: Massachusetts, Texas, New Hampshire, Kentucky. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Fidelity Investments's hub states run: Massachusetts, Texas, New Hampshire, Kentucky, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

Fidelity Investments layoff and severance questions

Did Fidelity Investments have layoffs in 2026?

Yes. In May 2026 Fidelity said it would end about 1 percent of its worldwide headcount, roughly a thousand technology and product roles, as those teams moved onto a new operating model. Bloomberg reported the count at about 800. The company said at the same time that it planned to hire more people than it was letting go.

What severance does Fidelity Investments pay in layoffs?

No terms are on record. Nothing was published for the May 2026 round, the March 2024 round, or the 2017 WARN filing, and no severance figure for any of them appears in a document or an attributed report in the reporting we track. If you have an agreement in hand, that's where the specifics of your own package are written down, and the law where you worked and any benefit plan the agreement points to can bear on what you're owed alongside it. Read what it says about the payment schedule and about what you give up by signing.

Is Fidelity hiring after the 2026 layoffs?

The company said it planned to hire about 3,300 people during 2026, roughly half of them in technology or product roles, and to add almost 2,000 early-career workers, which the Globe totaled as roughly 5,300 new jobs in the pipeline. PeopleMatters separately reported a plan to hire 1,300 more technology and product employees before year end. Those were plans described at announcement rather than commitments, and they say nothing about whether a particular team is adding people now.

When were Fidelity Investments' previous layoffs?

March 2024 was the last round before this one. Fidelity cut about 700 positions, under 1 percent of roughly 74,000 employees, and notified associates on March 7. Reporting at the time called it the firm's first headcount reduction in seven years, which points back to 2017, the year of the only Fidelity Investments notice in our tracker.

Has Fidelity Investments filed WARN notices for its layoffs?

Hardly any. One notice sits in our tracker for the whole history of the company, filed February 3, 2017 for 98 workers in Grapevine, Texas. There have been none in our tracker since the start of 2025, and none in 2026 either. Whether any given reduction carries a notice duty turns on the size of the event, the site it lands on, and the rules of the state it happens in, so a filing record this thin records what employers filed rather than what they cut.

Is Fidelity Investments the same company as Fidelity International?

No. Fidelity International was spun off from Fidelity Investments in 1980 and runs as a separate firm. In March 2024 it announced about 1,000 job cuts of its own in the same week Fidelity Investments cut 700, which is how the two get mixed up in coverage. Our tracker counts filings under Fidelity Investments names only.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Fidelity Investments?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Fidelity Investments's biggest U.S. hubs are Massachusetts, Texas, New Hampshire, Kentucky. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Fidelity Investments?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Fidelity Investments?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Fidelity Investments?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
