Laid off from Flagstar.
Several of Flagstar's layoffs have followed mortgage sales and closings. In 2017, as New York Community Bancorp, it agreed to sell a mortgage business and said some staff could go to the buyer. It said the same when it sold another in 2024, and both times layoff notices followed.

The most recent Flagstar layoff we've found
Flagstar laid off staff again in January 2026, finance chief Lee Smith said, according to American Banker, and the bank declined to say how many positions were eliminated or whether more were planned. A spokesperson put headcount at 5,600 at the end of 2025, nearly 20% below a year earlier.
What Flagstar layoffs have meant for employees
Flagstar's own notices have been blunt about what ends. Its April 2025 letter for the Troy worksite, as posted by Michigan's labor department, said the layoffs were permanent and that Flagstar was removing the affected employees from payroll and benefits, with no unions, no bumping rights and a worksite that wouldn't close. The 2017 notices for its Cleveland and Brooklyn, Ohio, offices also ruled out bumping rights, though, as Crain's Cleveland described them, they encouraged current employees to reapply for other positions within the company. If you were on Flagstar's health plan, there's more on how COBRA works, and if you've been offered a package, negotiating severance has more on weighing it.
In both mortgage sales, it was the buyer that decided who moved over. New York Community Bancorp said in 2017 that Freedom Mortgage was expected to retain some of its Cleveland mortgage employees, and its spokeswoman, according to Crain's Cleveland, sent questions about who would stay to Freedom. In 2025 it was Mr. Cooper that concluded, in a statement Crain's Detroit quoted, that it wouldn't bring on as many Flagstar team members as anticipated, having overestimated how many it would need. If a buyer offers you a transfer in writing, you can use that document to check the role, the employer, the start date, the pay and the benefits, since a buyer's own estimate of the staff it needs can change, as Mr. Cooper's did.
The servicing sale's layoffs also arrived in stages. Flagstar expected, in its October 17 release, to finish the sale in the fourth quarter of 2024. Yet the Troy layoffs were scheduled into the middle of 2025, with the April letter giving effective dates of June 8 and July 1, or within two weeks after, and Mr. Cooper said it had boarded the bulk of the servicing portfolio before concluding it would take fewer people. If you're doing transition work for a buyer or a seller, consider asking for the end date of that work in writing, since in this sale some people's last day was set months after the deal itself.
The January 2023 mortgage cuts came, by laid-off employees' accounts to HousingWire, on a Thursday morning with no warning, and their access to company systems, computers and email was shut off immediately. If you work in a part of the bank that's being restructured, consider keeping copies of your own pay and benefits records somewhere other than a work account, since former employees described their access ending at once.
Flagstar was still adding bankers as it shrank. It added more than 250 experienced bankers and support staff over 2025 to build its commercial and industrial banking platform, chief executive Joseph Otting said in remarks Banking Dive quoted, even as its workforce fell almost 20%. Finance chief Lee Smith had said, as Banking Dive reported in January 2025, that the branches and private-client locations closing that year sat in close proximity to other locations. If a closing puts your role at risk and you'd consider another Flagstar job, the nearby locations Smith described and the banker hiring Otting cited are both worth raising with the bank.
Flagstar's 2025 Michigan notices named Troy, where its regional headquarters housed the servicing business, while its 2017 Ohio notices carry New York Community Bancorp's name, so our WARN tracker is worth searching under both. If your job ended in Michigan or Ohio, Michigan unemployment benefits and Ohio unemployment benefits describe how claims work in each state, and for anyone based at the Hicksville, New York, headquarters, New York unemployment benefits does the same.

What to do if you're laid off from Flagstar
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Flagstar's biggest hubs: Michigan, Ohio. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Flagstar's hub states run: Michigan, Ohio, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Flagstar layoff and severance questions
What severance has Flagstar given laid-off employees?
The figures on record are company totals, $31 million in severance expenses in 2024 and $14 million in 2025, the latter tied to branch closures and employee reduction actions in Flagstar's fourth-quarter 2025 release. Severance in the January 2023 mortgage cuts, laid-off employees told HousingWire, was based on tenure and job position. If a package is offered to you, consider asking how the amount was figured and which benefits continue with it.
Did Mr. Cooper hire Flagstar's mortgage employees?
Mr. Cooper expected to take some of them. Flagstar said in October 2024 that most of about 1,200 employees in the sale would be offered transfers, its October 17 release shows, and in February 2025 Mr. Cooper told Crain's Detroit it expected to onboard about 350 servicing and 175 third-party origination team members, fewer than anticipated. Those origination staff were to move on to A&D Mortgage once its January 2025 deal for Mr. Cooper's wholesale and correspondent business was complete, and no later count of who moved is on record.
Is Flagstar the same company as New York Community Bancorp?
Yes. Flagstar was formerly known as New York Community Bancorp, American Banker notes, and its merger with Flagstar Bancorp was completed on December 1, 2022, according to the bank's October 2024 release. The company planned to take the Flagstar name later that October, Crain's Detroit reported, and you can look up layoff notices under either name in our WARN tracker.
Why has Flagstar been cutting jobs?
Flagstar tied its October 2024 workforce reduction to integrating three legacy banks, with chief executive Joseph Otting saying that in many cases roles were similar or duplicative, according to its October 17 release. For 2025, finance chief Lee Smith tied the consolidation of branches and private-client locations, per Banking Dive, to an effort to shed $600 million in operating expenses.
