GE Aerospace layoff history

GE Aerospace's own layoff paperwork has used the old name. Its October 2024 New York WARN notice was filed as General Electric Company d/b/a GE Aerospace, the company that officially became known as GE Aerospace after GE spun off its healthcare business in 2023 and split off GE Vernova in April 2024. The breakup plan dated to November 2021 and finished with the Vernova spin in the second quarter of 2024. Certain GE pension and retiree plans were legally split or allocated among the three companies as of January 1, 2023, so if you worked in more than one GE business, ask which company's plan holds your benefit now.

Schenectady is where the breakup turned into a layoff notice. On October 2, 2024, GE Aerospace told New York's labor department that 72 of the 152 employees at 1 River Road would lose their jobs between December 31, 2024 and January 31, 2025, none of them union-represented. The Times Union reported they'd worked for GE's corporate operation and had been asked to work through the transition before their jobs were eliminated, and a spokesman thanked the shared services organization. Helping take a company apart and then being cut when the job's done is a bitter way to go. New York's WARN law wants 90 days' notice before a mass layoff, which starts at 25 full-time employees when they're at least 33% of a site's staff, and this notice came exactly 90 days before its first layoff date. It named the Capital Region Workforce Development Board, which the state says can give affected employees information about unemployment insurance and workforce programs.

Our WARN tracker holds 11 GE Aerospace filings dated 2002 to 2021 and nothing dated 2025 or later. All 11 carry the aviation business's own names (GE Aviation, General Electric Aviation, GE Engine Services, Unison Industries, and Smiths Aerospace from before GE bought it), and together they list 2,013 jobs. Rows filed only under the General Electric name are left out; they include the conglomerate's transformer, lamp, appliance, software and steam-turbine sites and an Oregon utility that shares the name. The Schenectady notice isn't among the 11, because the tracker's New York archive begins in 2026. Four of the 11 come from Kansas, including Arkansas City filings that listed 420 and 130 jobs in 2020 and 14 in 2021.

Six of those filings date from 2020 and 2021. In May 2020, GE Aviation said it would permanently cut as much as 25% of a worldwide staff of about 52,000 at the end of 2019, up to 13,000 jobs, through layoffs and voluntary actions, including a 10% U.S. cut announced that March. The largest tracker filing from that stretch is a 529-job Ohio notice for Cincinnati and Hamilton. In Newark, Delaware, the company told the state it would lay off 194 of around 200 workers at a plant building ceramic matrix composite engine parts, and said it didn't plan to close the plant, keeping a small production crew for military contracts.

The quiet tracker sits beside filings that kept booking workforce reduction charges. GE Aerospace's 10-K put them at $166 million in 2023 and $107 million in 2024. It said its ongoing restructuring programs in those years primarily included exit activities announced in late 2022 that reflected lower shared-service and footprint needs after the spin-offs, and that it substantially completed that work in the last quarter of 2025. Its second-quarter 10-Q then showed $51 million of workforce reduction charges for January through June 2026, against $19 million for the same months of 2025, with no job count. In March 2026, the same company said it plans to hire 5,000 U.S. workers in 2026 after hiring 5,000 in 2025, alongside a $1 billion U.S. investment that included $115 million for Cincinnati, home to its headquarters. It describes itself as a global team of about 57,000.

If you were an executive, the severance plan GE Aerospace filed in 2024 is the document to read closely. As filed, it paid a lump sum of 6 to 18 months of base salary depending on career band, only after you signed a release of claims, which could carry non-compete and non-disparagement terms, by a deadline no later than 45 days after termination. It didn't count you as eligible if the company offered you a job in the same band within 50 miles at no more than a 20% cut in salary plus bonus opportunity, and outplacement required enrolling within 30 days. For everyone else, no formula is on record, and what the Schenectady group received doesn't obligate GE Aerospace to repeat it. Get the plan document HR is working from, and a pension statement in writing if you were hired before the GE Aerospace Pension Plan closed to new participants in 2012.

What to do after being laid off from GE Aerospace
