Laid off from GitHub.
GitHub cut 10% of the company in 2023, about 300 people, said it would close every office as leases ended, and eliminated its entire India engineering team, all while Copilot became the product the parent reorganized around. A Microsoft subsidiary with its own layoff record.

GitHub reports into Microsoft's CoreAI group now
In August 2025 GitHub's CEO said he would leave and that GitHub and its leadership team would continue inside Microsoft's CoreAI organization, with no successor appointed. Microsoft has kept cutting since, about 4,800 roles in July 2026 across Xbox and its commercial division, without naming GitHub in the count. Our tracker still holds nothing filed under GitHub's own name.

GitHub layoff history
GitHub's own layoff record is short and specific. On February 9, 2023 CEO Thomas Dohmke told staff the company would make a reduction of up to 10% of its workforce through the end of FY23, with some people notified that day and others as the business was realigned, and the round was reported as 10% of a company of about 3,000. The same message kept the January hiring pause in place and said GitHub wasn't vacating offices immediately but would move to close all of them as their leases ended. People cut in that round were told to expect transition compensation, COBRA or its equivalent outside the US, and career transition services, with no amounts attached to any of it.
The second stage landed the following month. GitHub laid off virtually its entire engineering team in India, eliminating over 100 jobs, and reporting citing people aware of the matter put the number at 142 roles across offices in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi. The company confirmed the round without confirming a count, saying it was consolidating certain business operations as part of the plan shared in February. On terms, a source told Business Today that those let go were given two months' pay and were made to sign a strict non-disclosure agreement in lieu of the severance benefits. That comes from attributed reporting rather than a document, and it describes one country's round in 2023.
Microsoft bought GitHub for 7.5 billion dollars in a stock deal announced June 2, 2018, and for years the unit kept a chief executive of its own. That ended in August 2025, when Dohmke said he'd leave and that GitHub and its leadership team would continue inside Microsoft's CoreAI organization, with the parent appointing no successor. Julia Liuson, who runs Microsoft's developer division, was reported to take on GitHub revenue, engineering and support, with GitHub's chief product officer reporting to a Microsoft AI platform vice president. If you're working out who decides your role now, that's the change that matters.
Since then the cuts have carried the parent's name. In May 2025 Microsoft let go of more than 6,000 people companywide, about 3% of its workforce, and 1,985 in Washington state, and its filing to Washington's Employment Security Department broke the round down by role, with 817 software engineers cut in the state and fewer than 17% of those laid off listed as managers. What the record holds about GitHub in that week is narrower than a headcount. Dohmke held a GitHub town hall repeating Microsoft's reasoning, and the unit stopped hiring for the rest of the fiscal year ending June 30, with no GitHub reductions confirmed anywhere in the reporting we track. Another 9,000 roles went in July 2025 and about 4,800 more in July 2026, with GitHub named in neither.
What the parent's filings quantify stops at the parent. Microsoft's reported full-time headcount fell from about 228,000 at the end of June 2025 to about 223,000 a year later, a net change of roughly 5,000 that absorbs hiring as well as cuts, and the same filing accounts for GitHub as a line of cloud services revenue rather than a headcount. For 2026 specifically, the only GitHub entry we found anywhere is an unverified rumor post on a community tracker dated May 15 with no number attached.
Our WARN tracker holds zero filings under GitHub's name, all-time, and that measures the name on the paperwork rather than the safety of the work. If you were cut here, your own documents are the place to start. Read what you were handed, note any deadline it sets for signing or responding, and check what it says about the pay still owed to you. Rules differ by where you live, and a remote workforce spreads across a lot of places at once, so your state's own guidance and your separation agreement are the two things worth reading closely before you sign.
Reporting on previous GitHub layoff rounds
2023 · A reduction of up to 10% through the end of FY23, about 300 roles from a company of roughly 3,000, with virtually the entire India engineering team cut in March and offices set to close as their leases ended
Transition compensation, COBRA or its equivalent outside the US, and career transition services, per the CEO's message to staff, with no amounts published. In India, a source described two months' pay against a non-disclosure agreement.
How GitHub's layoffs compare to other companies
GitHub's zero-filing record measures the name on the paperwork rather than the safety of the work. Microsoft notices its own cuts as Microsoft, the way it told Washington about 1,985 state layoffs in May 2025, while GitHub, remote-first and spread around the world by its departing CEO's description, has nothing in our tracker under its own name. That gap is why the rounds above come from company statements and reporting rather than from state filings.
What to do after being laid off from GitHub
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. GitHub's biggest hubs: California, Washington, Texas. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what GitHub's hub states run: California, Washington, Texas, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
GitHub layoff and severance questions
What severance does GitHub pay in layoffs?
No standing terms are on record. For the 2023 round GitHub told staff that affected people would get transition compensation, COBRA or its equivalent outside the US, and career transition services, without publishing amounts. In India, reporting citing people aware of the matter described two months' pay against a non-disclosure agreement. Nothing since has been published in the reporting we track, and the governing document is your own agreement.
Why doesn't GitHub appear in WARN databases?
Our tracker holds zero filings under GitHub's name, all-time. That's a fact about the name on the filing rather than about job security. Microsoft files its own notices as Microsoft, the way it disclosed 1,985 Washington layoffs to the state in May 2025, and GitHub runs remote-first by its departing CEO's description, spread around the world, so its people sit in many states at once rather than at one filing address.
Are GitHub layoffs part of Microsoft's layoffs?
GitHub hasn't announced a round of its own since 2023, and Microsoft's rounds since then name divisions rather than GitHub. During Microsoft's May 2025 cuts GitHub held its own town hall and stopped hiring for the rest of that fiscal year, though no GitHub reductions are confirmed in the reporting we track. The 2023 restructuring was GitHub's own, announced by GitHub's own CEO.
Did GitHub have layoffs in 2026?
Nothing GitHub-specific is confirmed in the reporting we track. A community layoff tracker carries one unverified GitHub entry dated May 15, 2026, marked a rumor and listing no number of people, which is an employee-report post rather than a company announcement. Microsoft cut about 4,800 roles that July without naming GitHub among the divisions.
Who runs GitHub now that Thomas Dohmke left?
Microsoft appointed no successor. Dohmke said in August 2025 that he'd stay through the end of that year, and GitHub's leadership continued inside Microsoft's CoreAI organization, with Julia Liuson reported to take on GitHub revenue, engineering and support. If you're working out who decides your role now, the answer sits in Microsoft's structure rather than GitHub's.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from GitHub?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. GitHub's biggest U.S. hubs are California, Washington, Texas. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at GitHub?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at GitHub?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from GitHub?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
