Laid off from GM.
GM's EV bet reversed hard, and the layoffs came in flavors, temporary, indefinite, permanent, that mean completely different things under the UAW contract. Which word appears in your notice decides your next six months.

EV and battery cuts keep rippling through 2026
GM cut more than 3,400 jobs across its EV and battery operations in late 2025 as federal credits ended and demand cooled, then kept adjusting, idling 1,300 Factory Zero workers again for a month in spring 2026. Detroit's three automakers had cut more than 20,000 U.S. salaried jobs from their recent peaks by mid-2026.

How GM has handled layoffs in the past
GM's recent cuts have been the EV transition running in reverse. The company built out battery and EV assembly capacity, then cut more than 3,400 of those jobs in late 2025 when federal tax credits ended and demand fell short, with Factory Zero dropping shifts and idling repeatedly into 2026 and Fairfax Assembly parking about 900 workers indefinitely. Product strategy, not performance, has decided who's out.
For hourly workers, the word in the notice is the whole ballgame. A temporary layoff under the UAW contract typically comes with supplemental unemployment benefits stacked on state unemployment and a recall date, an indefinite layoff starts the transfer-list and recall-rights machinery, and a permanent reduction triggers the contract's separation terms. None of those are the same thing as severance, and your UAW local, not HR, is the authority on which applies to you.
The salaried side has run quieter and larger than most people register. By mid-2026, GM, Ford, and Stellantis had cut more than 20,000 U.S. salaried jobs, about 19 percent of their combined white-collar workforces, with AI increasingly cited. GM hasn't published salaried severance terms in any recent round, so everything on the deadlines page, the OWBPA review windows especially, is doing the work a published formula would.

Quick answers
What's the difference between temporary and indefinite layoff at GM?
Under the UAW contract, a temporary layoff usually carries supplemental unemployment benefits on top of your state claim and an expected recall, while an indefinite layoff activates recall rights and transfer machinery without a return date. Your local's benefits rep can tell you which bucket you're in and what it pays. File the state claim immediately either way.
What severance do salaried GM employees get?
GM hasn't published terms for its recent salaried cuts. With no formula on the record, the federal floors matter more, 21 to 45 days to review any release if you're 40 or older, and WARN notice where site thresholds are met.
What severance has GM given laid-off employees?
3,400+ (ev and battery jobs cut in late 2025). Temporary layoffs under the UAW contract, where supplemental unemployment benefits and recall rights apply rather than severance. Packages change between rounds, and your separation agreement is the only version that counts.
Where do I file for unemployment after a GM layoff?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. GM's biggest U.S. hubs are Michigan, Kansas, Ohio. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
Not on the spot. First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from GM?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
Help for people recently laid off from GM
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. GM's biggest hubs: Michigan, Kansas, Ohio. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Don't sign the severance agreement on the spot. Find out in writing how long you have to review it. At 40 or older, federal law guarantees 21 days, 45 in group layoffs. Under 40, the packet's deadline may be real, so ask for time rather than assume. Read our severance breakdown first. The clauses matter more than the number.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
