Laid off from Goodyear.

Goodyear's two largest US cuts since 2025, Danville's commercial tire lines and the whole Fayetteville factory, were both filed as agreements with the United Steelworkers. What each cut came with has depended on which contract covers the site.

Goodyear layoff history

Whether your Goodyear job is already gone or you're waiting to hear about your plant, this is a rotten spot to be in. Start with which agreement covers your site, because the recent cuts haven't all worked the same way. Goodyear filed the January 2025 Danville cut and the July 2026 Fayetteville closure as plans agreed with the United Steelworkers, and the master contract ratified in August 2026 covers roughly 2,600 workers in Akron, Topeka and Danville. Selling, administrative and general roles went in smaller plans, about 80 in the Americas and corporate functions in early 2025 and about 100 globally in early 2026, with no terms on record. At the Findlay mold plant, which had no bumping rights, Goodyear said it would offer severance and outplacement.

Danville shows how a count moves while a plan runs. Goodyear's filing said about 850, contracted positions included, with the plant keeping aviation tire production and mixing, the 2025 10-K later said about 950 for ending commercial tire production there, and the Virginia WARN filing in our tracker, dated January 31, 2025, listed 815. WSET's buyout figures came from documents it said an anonymous employee provided, an unverified report, and nothing in the reporting we track adds company-confirmed numbers.

Fayetteville is the big one. Goodyear opened it in 1969 through its Kelly-Springfield subsidiary, approved about 300 net headcount reductions there in late 2025, and in May 2026 said it was talking with USW Local 959 about ending operations by December 2027. The July closure filing budgets $40 million to $50 million for pension special termination benefits, beside $190 million to $210 million in cash charges mostly for associate-related and other exit costs. No terms on record say how that splits by person, so ask Local 959 or HR in writing how the pension piece applies to your years of service.

All of this sits beside Goodyear Forward, the program Goodyear says it completed in 2025 with an annual run-rate benefit of about $1.5 billion from cost actions that included its manufacturing footprint, and about $2.2 billion in gross proceeds from selling its off-the-road tire business, the Dunlop brand and its polymer chemicals business. The 2024 annual report counted about 68,000 associates in 53 plants, and the 2025 report about 63,000 in 49. About 2,200 associates were slated for release under plans begun in 2025, and the June 2026 quarterly report put about 1,200 still to go under all ongoing plans, a count taken before the Fayetteville closure plan existed.

Our WARN filing tracker counts 14 Goodyear filings all-time, Cooper Tire and Kelly-Springfield names included, and 2 filings covering 900 jobs since the start of 2025, Danville's 815 and 85 at Findlay in January 2026. Where a notice exists, pull it and hold it against any separation papers before you sign. The Findlay one dated the separations and said outright that the site had no bumping rights.

How Goodyear's layoffs compare to other companies

The Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism reported that Danville's 815 jobs made up the largest single round of layoffs in Virginia in 2025. The News & Observer said the Fayetteville closure would be one of the biggest factory closures by employment loss in recent North Carolina history, and cited state records putting the last factory closure affecting more than 1,700 workers in early 2022, when fire destroyed a QVC distribution center in Rocky Mount.

What to do after being laid off from Goodyear

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Goodyear's biggest hubs: Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Goodyear's hub states run: Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

Goodyear layoff and severance questions

Is Goodyear closing the Fayetteville plant?

Yes. On July 16, 2026 Goodyear agreed with the United Steelworkers to permanently close the Fayetteville, North Carolina plant, about 1,750 job reductions, and said it expected to substantially complete the plan by the end of 2027. About 300 net headcount reductions there were approved in late 2025. Our tracker's 2 Goodyear filings from 2025 onward are the Danville and Findlay notices.

What severance package has Goodyear offered laid-off workers?

It's differed by site, and no company-wide formula is on record. WSET reported Danville buyouts of $3,000 per year of service, from $25,000 to $105,000, based on documents it said an anonymous employee provided, an unverified employee report. The 2026 Findlay notice said workers would be offered severance and outplacement, with no amounts, the USW says it won enhanced severance provisions in the 2026 master, and Fayetteville has no terms on record. Our notes on negotiating a severance agreement cover review windows and what to ask for.

How many jobs did Goodyear cut in Danville, Virginia?

It depends which document you read. Goodyear's January 2025 filing counted about 850, contracted positions included, its 2025 10-K about 950, and the Virginia WARN filing in our tracker listed 815.

Which Goodyear plants does the 2026 USW contract cover?

The master contract USW members ratified in August 2026 covers roughly 2,600 workers in Akron, Ohio, Topeka, Kansas and Danville, Virginia, through April 28, 2029. The union says it won lump-sum payments, enhanced severance provisions and a new Income Security Benefit, and no terms on record put amounts on any of them. Fayetteville sits outside those three, and its closure came from a July 16, 2026 agreement with the USW.

Did Goodyear have layoffs in 2026?

Yes. In January Goodyear filed an 85-job WARN notice in Ohio, per our tracker, telling the state it would close the Tall Timbers mold plant in Findlay, by June it had approved about 400 net cuts in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, about 100 selling, administrative and general roles and about 200 more globally, and in July it agreed with the USW to close Fayetteville. Our tracker's 2026 count is 1 filing covering 85 jobs.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Goodyear?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Goodyear's biggest U.S. hubs are Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Goodyear?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Goodyear?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Goodyear?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
