Home Depot cuts about 800 corporate roles, mostly remote tech jobs
On 28 January 2026 Home Depot cut about 800 roles, roughly 150 held by people at its Atlanta headquarters and the rest remote, mostly in technology. Georgia's notice listed 797 employees, with layoffs taking effect from 31 March. The newest corporate change on record came at the end of July 2026, when store, supply chain and Pro technology teams moved under the CTO hired in March, and nothing in the reporting we track links any job cuts to it.

Home Depot layoff history
Most of the roughly 800 people Home Depot cut in January 2026 weren't based at its Atlanta headquarters. About 150 were based there and the rest were remote, most in the technology organization and some on other corporate teams. Losing a job from your kitchen table is its own kind of awful, and the same memo told the people still employed that corporate work was moving to a five-day office week starting the week of 6 April. Decker wrote that the company had to move faster and stay even more closely connected to customers and frontline associates, and he called the changes essential to simplifying the business.
Home Depot filed its Georgia WARN notice on 28 January, the day it announced the cut, and it listed 797 employees with layoffs taking effect from 31 March. Staff stopped working immediately, and 31 March became the official termination date and the day separation packages began. That's 62 days after the announcement, by WSB-TV's count, against the federal minimum of 60 calendar days' written warning before a plant closing or a mass layoff that hits 50 or more people at one site, with exceptions. A class action firm, Strauss Borrelli, announced it was looking into whether the 797 got that notice, and Home Depot told the station it complied with all WARN Act requirements. Our tracker dates the Georgia row 31 March 2026 because that effective date is the only one Georgia's archive keeps for it.
Stores came up a month later, on the 24 February earnings call, where Ann-Marie Campbell said Home Depot had realigned certain store positions, adding an Operations Experience Manager to run customer service more broadly, and was handing tasks to its merchandising team, the MET team, so orange apron associates had more time with customers. She put hourly associate tenure at its highest since 2017. One change reached both sides. Bloomberg reported, as relayed by TheStreet, that a memo to eligible store and corporate employees raised the minimum sales performance threshold for bonuses from 90% to 95% and cut the payout at that minimum from 50% to 25% of target, starting with September's bonuses.
Home Depot also cut jobs in January 2008, 2009 and 2010, and the 2009 round drew the line between stores and support most plainly. Exiting Expo closed 48 design stores, 34 of them Expo Design Centers, and with support cuts reached about 7,000 employees. About 2,000 were support roles, the officer ranks shrank 10 percent, and the company said no customer-facing positions in Home Depot stores would be affected, while officers took a salary freeze and non-officers kept merit increases, while earned bonuses and the 401(k) match continued for all. CEO Frank Blake tied the 2010 round's 1,000 cuts to centralizing human resources and accounting, and wrote that it wasn't a case of cutting expenses in reaction to economic pressure. Core stores weren't always spared. In May 2008 Home Depot closed 15 stores, affecting 1,300 employees, some of whom were to be relocated, after 950 jobs and three installation call centers went in December 2007 and 500 headquarters jobs the next month.
The tracker counts 30 Home Depot filings all-time, HD Supply's included. Home Depot sold HD Supply in 2007 and it was a Home Depot subsidiary again by 2025; two rows from units HD Supply sold off after 2007 are left out. There are 4 filings covering 1,051 jobs since the start of 2025. Besides Georgia's, HD Supply noticed 108 in Tennessee for a La Vergne distribution center it said it was consolidating into another La Vergne facility, 85 went at the Rockville Design Center in Maryland, and 61 at a Mexico, Missouri, distribution facility that closed 26 October 2025. When a site folds into one nearby, ask in writing whether a job at the receiving site is on offer to you, and on what terms.
Two WARN details matter here. Supervisors and managers are entitled to notice along with hourly and salaried employees, and the Labor Department's own summary says the office that administers WARN doesn't seek damages for workers given inadequate notice or none. If your dates don't add up, take them to an employment lawyer. Some states run plant closing rules on top of the federal one, which is where the state pages linked from here help. All 30 Home Depot filings are in our WARN tracker with their dates.

What to do after being laid off from Home Depot
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Home Depot's biggest hubs: Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Missouri. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Home Depot's hub states run: Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Missouri, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Home Depot layoff and severance questions
How many employees did Home Depot lay off in 2026?
About 800 corporate roles went in January, with 797 on the Georgia notice. Our tracker holds 2 Home Depot filings for 2026 covering 882 jobs in two states, Georgia's and 85 at the Rockville Design Center in Maryland. HD Supply's 108 in La Vergne were noticed in October 2025, so they count toward 2025 even though that closure was set for early January 2026.
What severance did Home Depot give laid-off corporate workers?
Home Depot said affected employees would get separation packages, transitional benefits and help finding new employment, with no amounts on record. Work stopped immediately, termination came on 31 March 2026, and packages started then. If your package comes with a release to sign, find the termination date and the date health coverage ends before you sign it.
Did Home Depot lay off store employees?
The January 2026 cut covered roles associated with the store support center. In February, Ann-Marie Campbell said Home Depot had realigned certain store positions, adding an Operations Experience Manager, without giving a count of positions changed. Earlier rounds went both ways. In May 2008, 15 stores closed with 1,300 employees affected, and the 2009 Expo exit said no customer-facing positions in Home Depot stores would be affected.
Does Home Depot require corporate employees in the office five days a week?
The January 2026 memo set a five-day office schedule for corporate staff from the week of 6 April, announced with the cut. Since most of the roughly 800 roles eliminated were remote, plenty of remote corporate employees got one change or the other that month.
Do HD Supply layoffs count as Home Depot layoffs?
Our tracker counts them. Home Depot sold HD Supply to private equity firms in August 2007, and by October 2025 it was a Home Depot subsidiary again. Two rows from units HD Supply sold off after 2007 are left out of the 30 filings all-time. HD Supply's La Vergne, Tennessee, center, with 108 jobs, was consolidating into another La Vergne facility, the company said, so if you worked there, ask whether a role at the other site was offered to you.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Home Depot?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Home Depot's biggest U.S. hubs are Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Missouri. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Home Depot?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Home Depot?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Home Depot?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
