Laid off from Kroger.
Kroger cut three separate workforces across 2025 and 2026, and what a person was offered depended entirely on which of them they worked in. The automated warehouse shutdown left the biggest public record, and the corporate round is the only one with a severance figure sitting in the filings.

Kroger layoff history
Which part of Kroger you worked for decided most of what happened next. The company made cuts to three separate workforces starting in June 2025, and treated them nothing alike. Our tracker holds 46 all-time Kroger filings, and 29 filings covering 2,118 jobs since the start of 2025, across nine states, and the five largest filings in that stretch are all fulfillment network sites. The warehouses are where the public record is thick. The corporate cuts and the store closings left much less behind.
The warehouse shutdown arrived as a press release that never mentioned a job. On November 18, 2025 Kroger announced updates to its eCommerce plan and said it had identified opportunities to optimize its fulfillment network by closing facilities in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, Frederick, Maryland and Groveland, Florida in January. Ron Sargent, the chairman and chief executive, said the company was taking decisive action to make shopping easier and offer faster delivery times. The headcounts showed up separately, in state filings. Our tracker holds the Groveland notice at 935 jobs, Tampa at 234, Pleasant Prairie at 211 and Jacksonville at 181, and Florida reporting described the Groveland workforce as mostly delivery drivers and personal shoppers.
What those workers were offered is thin, and all of it sits in the notices. A notice to Jacksonville employees said all associates would continue to receive their regular pay and benefits and would remain employed until February 1, 2026, when their employment would terminate. Wisconsin's notice said the 211 people at Pleasant Prairie would be paid and covered through the beginning of February. A Kroger spokesperson said the Florida employees weren't represented by a union and had no bumping rights, and the Tennessee notice covering 132 workers in Nashville said the same. No severance terms are on record for any of these closings. An employee at the Oklahoma City site, speaking anonymously to a local station, said they got laid off by a recording by some guy in Ohio, an employee account Kroger hasn't confirmed.
The corporate round is the only one of the three carrying a severance number. Kroger's filings say that during the second quarter of 2025 it approved and implemented a plan to reduce its corporate administrative team by nearly 1,000 associates, and recorded a charge for severance and related benefits of $47 million, $37 million net of tax. That's an accounting total for a whole group rather than anyone's offer, with no formula or per-person terms published. Reporting on the round said interim chief executive Ron Sargent announced it in an internal memo aimed at simplifying the organization, and that a company spokesperson said it didn't include any in-store, manufacturing facility or distribution center staffers. A warehouse or store worker cut in the same year sat outside the population that charge covers.
The store closings came with a different promise. Kroger's first quarter results on June 20, 2025 recognized a $100 million impairment charge for the planned closing of approximately 60 stores over the next 18 months, and said it would offer roles in other stores to all associates then employed at affected stores. It said something similar about the newest entry in our tracker, an announced Flint Township closing effective September 30, 2026, where it said it would again offer affected associates a transfer. The money moved on a different scale from the people. Kroger told investors in November to expect roughly $2.6 billion in impairment and related charges, and the audited figure came in at $2,497 million, $1,908 million net of tax, including a cash termination payment to Ocado of approximately $350 million.
Your own paperwork settles more than any of this does. Kroger's annual report says it employed more than 403,000 full-time and part-time people at the end of January 2026, and that more than two-thirds of its associates were covered under approximately 350 collective bargaining agreements. The fulfillment sites that closed were reported as carrying neither union representation nor bumping rights. So settle first whether an agreement covers you at all, and what it and your separation paperwork say, before you sign anything. A notice can also pull in help. The Tennessee notice for Nashville said a regional rapid response team had been notified to coordinate services with the employer and affected employees. Oregon's coordinating commission says its rapid response team delivers pre-layoff sessions covering unemployment insurance, WorkSource Oregon services, health insurance exchange information and Trade Act or union information. Our WARN filing tracker will tell you whether a notice was filed for your site and what headcount it carried.

What to do after being laid off from Kroger
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Kroger's biggest hubs: Florida, Wisconsin, Tennessee. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Kroger's hub states run: Florida, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Kroger layoff and severance questions
Does Kroger pay severance when it closes a facility?
The record splits by which workforce you were in. For the corporate administrative round, Kroger's filings carry a charge for severance and related benefits of $47 million, $37 million net of tax, against a plan to cut nearly 1,000 associates, with no formula and no individual terms published. For the fulfillment center closings, no severance terms are on record, only regular pay and benefits running until employment terminated on February 1, 2026. For store closings, Kroger said it would offer roles in other stores. Whatever sits in your own separation agreement is what binds.
Were the workers at Kroger's closing fulfillment centers in a union?
The notices say they weren't. A Kroger spokesperson said the Florida employees weren't represented by a union and had no bumping rights, and the Tennessee notice covering 132 workers in Nashville said the same about that site. Set that against the company as a whole, where Kroger's annual report says more than two-thirds of associates were covered under approximately 350 collective bargaining agreements. Worth finding out which of those describes your own job, and if an agreement did cover you, reading what it says about a closing rather than assuming.
Which Kroger fulfillment centers closed in 2026?
Kroger's annual report names three automated centers, Pleasant Prairie in Wisconsin, Frederick in Maryland and Groveland in Florida, all closing in January 2026, and says the company canceled a planned site in Charlotte, North Carolina. The smaller sites that fed them closed alongside. Our tracker holds Florida notices for Tampa at 234 jobs and Jacksonville at 181, and a Tennessee notice for 132 jobs in Nashville, with employment ending February 1, 2026.
How many Kroger layoff filings are on record?
Our tracker holds 46 all-time Kroger filings, and 29 filings covering 2,118 jobs since the start of 2025, across nine states. 2026 holds 19 of those filings, covering 136 jobs across two states, and the five largest filings in the whole stretch are all fulfillment network sites. That count matches filings made under the Kroger name, so a notice a banner company filed under its own name is counted somewhere else.
What happened to pay between the Kroger closing notice and the last day?
The fulfillment notices promised continuity rather than a payout. Associates stayed employed on their regular pay and benefits until the February 1, 2026 termination date, and Wisconsin's notice added that people could use the remaining time to look for other work. Nothing in those notices promised anything after that date.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Kroger?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Kroger's biggest U.S. hubs are Florida, Wisconsin, Tennessee. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Kroger?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Kroger?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Kroger?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
