Laid off from Leidos.

Leidos layoff history
With a Leidos notice in hand, or one you're bracing for, the most useful thing to pin down is which customer your work was billed to, or whether it was billed to one at all. That's an ugly question to sit with, and it's the line Leidos's 2026 record draws. Our WARN tracker holds 10 filings covering 511 jobs since the start of 2025, all in Maryland and Virginia, out of 25 Leidos filings all time, at a company that had about 47,000 employees in January 2026. Each of the three 2026 filings points at a federal customer. The Ashburn notice for 93 jobs was headed "Leidos CBP SOC Contract," and Customs and Border Protection had announced in August 2025 that it would recompete a possible $100 million contract Leidos held as incumbent. Leidos didn't immediately respond to a reporter's request for comment.
For the two April filings in Maryland, Leidos gave the reasons itself. A spokesperson said the 71 cuts at Fort Meade, where Leidos worked out of the Defense Information Systems Agency, reflected contract changes and the agency bringing some work in-house. The spokesperson said the 156 in Windsor Mill came from the Social Security Administration expanding from a contract with Leidos to a multi-contractor program, which would include "transitioning part of the current work to other vendors." The same street address, 3300 Lord Baltimore Drive, also carried a 20-job Leidos notice in March 2025 that the state log gives no reason for.
The June notices went to people whose time wasn't charged to any customer, and the stated reason was organizational change. On the February 17 earnings call, CFO Chris Cage said Leidos expected to "drive indirect cost efficiencies through the enterprise transformation initiative." In June, Leidos told 305 employees in indirect positions that their roles were being eliminated, which a spokesman described as organizational changes meant to "help us to operate more efficiently." The 10-Q for the quarter ended July 3 shows restructuring costs of $27 million, against $1 million a year earlier. Nothing in the reporting we track ties the notices by name to the transformation initiative or to that cost line. Washington Technology also reported unverified posts on online discussion boards complaining of little warning and impersonal communications.
Which side you were on shapes what to ask for. The April statements came with a promise to reassign as many people as possible to open Leidos positions in Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C., and the June round came with word that several dozen people had been or were being placed in direct roles. Leidos QTC said something similar in 2025. So ask for internal openings in writing before your separation date, and look past the Beltway, since CEO Tom Bell said in August that the Huntsville workforce had grown 13% since the start of the year. If your work is moving to another vendor, ask the vendors picking it up whether they're taking on the people who did it.
Then read the notice itself. In Maryland, the state's rules require a covered employer to give at least 60 days' written notice and to say whether a reduction is expected to be permanent or temporary, and the state typed both April 2026 Leidos rows Mass Layoff - No Recall. The Ashburn notice said no bumping rights exist. Our tracker lists every Leidos filing behind the counts here, so you can match your notice to its row.

How Leidos's layoffs compare to other companies
Leidos wasn't the only contractor filing at Fort Meade that day. Maryland's log shows Tyto Athene filing for 39 jobs at the same 6910 Cooper Ave address on the same April 2 date as Leidos's 71, with the same May 31 effective date. Nothing in the reporting we track names a contract the two shared.
What to do after being laid off from Leidos
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Leidos's biggest hubs: Maryland, Virginia. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Leidos's hub states run: Maryland, Virginia, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Leidos layoff and severance questions
Is Leidos laying off employees in 2026?
Yes. Our tracker holds 3 filings covering 320 jobs across 2 states in 2026. Those are 93 jobs in Ashburn, Virginia, in January, then 71 at Fort Meade and 156 in Windsor Mill, Maryland, in April. Leidos also told 305 indirect employees in June that their roles were being eliminated, and nothing in the reporting we track connects those notices to a state, a site or a WARN filing.
Why did Leidos lay off workers in Windsor Mill?
Leidos said the 156 cuts, effective June 5, 2026, came from the Social Security Administration expanding from a contract with Leidos to a multi-contractor program, including moving part of the work to other vendors. The same address, 3300 Lord Baltimore Drive, carried a 20-job Leidos notice in March 2025, and Maryland's log gives no reason for that one.
Does Leidos pay severance?
For the June 2026 round, a Leidos spokesman said the company was offering severance payments and outplacement assistance. No amounts, formula or eligibility rules are on record for that round or any other Leidos round, so if Leidos offers you severance, ask for the amount or formula, the eligibility rules, any release and its signing deadline in writing before your last day.
How much notice does Leidos have to give workers in Maryland?
Under Maryland's Economic Stabilization Act, an employer with at least 50 Maryland employees that has operated for at least a year owes written notice at least 60 days before shutting down all or part of a workplace in a way that cuts its headcount by at least 25% or 15 employees, whichever is greater, over any three months, with some exemptions. The notice has to say whether the cut is expected to be permanent or temporary.
Did Leidos QTC have layoffs?
Yes, in June 2025. Leidos QTC Health Services, the California-based subsidiary behind Leidos's VA disability exam work, said it was cutting at least 77 jobs assigned to its Reston headquarters, mostly remote, and called it an internal initiative. About a dozen of the affected workers were in Virginia, a spokesperson said. The cut followed a $5.1 billion VA contract extension that January.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Leidos?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Leidos's biggest U.S. hubs are Maryland, Virginia. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Leidos?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Leidos?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Leidos?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
