Laid off from Marsden Services.
When a client moves a Marsden Services contract, the question on site is whether the job survives the change. Covered Twin Cities janitors have a union agreement with written terms for that moment.

What Marsden Services layoffs have meant for employees
Six of the nine sites in Marsden's notices since 2023 were lost along with a contract, and that's a narrower thing than a company shrinking. Marsden's Ohio WARN letter said as much about Etna, noting that the Amazon site wasn't closing. The cleaning there was going to carry on under an incoming contractor, and the letter left actual hiring to that company. Other sites may work differently, but Etna shows how the next step after a lost contract can sit with someone other than Marsden.
The warning has run on the client's calendar. At MSP the rebid played out in public, with the MAC staff memo showing commissioners authorizing the request for proposals in February 2023 for a contract that expired December 31, and Marsden among three bidders interviewed in July. The airport also wrote pay into the bid, requiring an hourly wage between $16.93 and $21.77 along with health insurance. Amazon and the Louisville client left less room. Marsden's Ohio letter came 40 days before its February 20 start, the Louisville notice 25 days before May 10, and both pointed to the unforeseeable circumstances of a client's notice. If your site's client runs public bids, as the airport does, its meeting records may show a contract change well before any layoff notice does.
Twin Cities janitors under SEIU Local 26 have the most detailed answer on record. The union posts its 2024-2027 agreement online with a note that the posting isn't official and that the PDF is the official contract, so the PDF controls if the two differ. With signature lines for Marsden Bldg. Maintenance and Flagship, the posted text says that when covered work changes hands between Local 26 contractors, the arriving company will offer jobs to the departing contractor's non-probationary employees. Those it hires keep their seniority date, pay rate, vacation accrual, full-time or part-time status and benefits eligibility, with no new waiting period. The catches are written down too. A customer can disqualify someone, everyone else still has to pass the arriving company's normal hiring process, including background checks and drug screening, and first shifts and schedules are that company's call. When a company loses a cleaning contract, an employee it doesn't place in a substantially comparable job keeps laid-off status for 12 months or until two comparable offers, with full seniority if recalled in that time, and a comparable offer from the company may leave as little as one working day to answer. That agreement dates from March 2024, after MSP changed hands, so it speaks to the next contract change more than to that one.
Outside that agreement the paper is thinner. Monee and Matteson show No for both union and bumping rights in Illinois's January 2024 WARN report, and the Courier Journal reported the same for Louisville. Marsden's Minnesota letter spells out what no bumping rights means, that a laid-off worker has no right to take another employee's job. The Ohio letter's talk of similar jobs was a forecast about another company's hiring. If an incoming contractor starts taking applications at your site, applying while you're still on Marsden's schedule leaves time to compare its shifts and pay with what you have now.
Ambridge adds a different point. A filing's number can run past a company's own staff, as Pennsylvania's WARN notice list shows, with only 80 of those it counted listed as Marsden employees. If an agency places you at a Marsden site, that's worth knowing when you look at a notice's count, because you can be in it without being on Marsden's staff.
If a contract change leaves you out of work, our unemployment pages for Minnesota, Illinois, Kentucky and Arizona cover four of the states on Marsden's notices. Those are the next stop whether or not the new contractor calls.
A sourced history of Marsden Services layoffs
April 2026, Louisville client ends Marsden's contract
A notice dated April 15 said layoffs would begin May 10 at 4915 Heller St. because a client was terminating Marsden's contract, the Courier Journal reported. State data showed 106 employees, none with a union or bumping rights.
February 2024, Amazon changes janitorial vendors at Etna and Memphis
Marsden's Ohio WARN letter said Amazon hadn't renewed its agreement at CMH 1 in Etna, which wasn't closing, with 88 layoffs expected over 14 days from February 20. Another 105 were due in Memphis from that date, the Daily Memphian reported, quoting Amazon on changing janitorial vendors.
January 2024, notices at Monee, Matteson and St. Peters
A lost contract sat behind 121 jobs in Matteson and 113 in Monee, with first layoffs February 20, Illinois's January 2024 WARN report shows. A 93-job St. Peters, Missouri, filing in our WARN tracker carries the same dates.
October 2023, MSP Airport janitorial work goes to Flagship
Marsden's WARN letter set a December 31 closing and expected many workers to have job opportunities with the incoming contractor. Flagship won the work effective January 1, 2024, per November commission minutes, and Minnesota's 2023 layoff report lists 219 workers.
June 2023, Ambridge layoff with agency temps
Pennsylvania's WARN notice list shows 179 affected at 2301 Duss Avenue effective June 30, 80 Marsden employees and 99 agency temps.
What to do if you're laid off from Marsden Services
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Marsden Services's biggest hubs: Minnesota, Illinois, Kentucky, Arizona. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Marsden Services's hub states run: Minnesota, Illinois, Kentucky, Arizona, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Marsden Services layoff and severance questions
What severance has Marsden Services given laid-off employees?
Neither Marsden's Ohio letter nor its Minnesota letter gives a severance amount, and the Courier Journal reported none from the Louisville notice. If SEIU Local 26's commercial contract covers your job, the union's posted text of its 2024-2027 agreement, which it marks unofficial with its PDF as the official contract, promises two weeks' paid notice of a layoff, with exceptions for a contract terminated on shorter notice and for government contracts, and has the outgoing contractor pay unused vacation when a building changes hands.
Did Marsden's MSP Airport janitors keep their jobs when Flagship took over?
No count of how many moved to Flagship is on record. The airport's MAC staff memo required the winning bidder to follow its worker retention requirements, and Minnesota's 2023 layoff report filed the event under Aversion/Retention, its label for a company working to avert or minimize layoffs and retain employees.
Did Amazon drop Marsden Services as its janitorial contractor?
At Etna, Ohio, and Memphis, yes. Marsden's Ohio letter expected most Etna employees to be offered the same or similar positions by the incoming contractor, adding that it might have different or additional hiring standards, and Amazon told the Daily Memphian a recent review had led it to change vendors.
How many WARN notices has Marsden Services filed?
Our WARN tracker shows 7 from Marsden Services and Marsden Bldg Maint, in six states since 2023. The total is at least two higher, because the Etna notice in its Ohio letter and the Memphis layoffs the Daily Memphian covered fall in 2024, a year our Ohio and Tennessee archives skip.
Why did Marsden Services lay off workers in Tucson?
No cause is on record for the 85 jobs on Marsden's Tucson notice of April 15, 2026, a filing in our WARN tracker. That leaves open whether it was a lost contract like Louisville's, which the Courier Journal tied to a client's decision.
