Marsh McLennan layoff history

Getting cut by a company that named its cost program Thrive stings in its own particular way. If Marsh McLennan let you go, or you're waiting to hear, that program, launched in the third quarter of 2025, carries most of the restructuring in its recent filings. By June 30, 2026 the company had booked $239 million in Thrive costs, primarily severance, $52 million of it in the second quarter. It estimates the whole program at about $500 million over three years, expects the charges to be spread evenly, and says it's still refining the plans, so timing and totals can move. The filing counts dollars, and nothing in the reporting we track counts the people.

The company laid Thrive out on October 16, 2025, saying technology investments and workforce actions would yield about $400 million in savings over three years. CFO Mark McGivney said the $500 million in charges would come mainly from severance, work transitions and simplifying the organization, and that most of the savings would come from Business and Client Services (BCS), a new unit pulling together technology, data and operations teams. CEO John Doyle said part of the savings would go back into talent and technology, AI included. On the July 2026 earnings call he described Thrive as designed to accelerate growth, with client-facing hires in sectors where the company sees opportunity. He also described a partnership of BCS, Oliver Wyman and Amazon Web Services to reimagine mid- and back-office work, starting with pilots on claim services and reinsurance treaty issuance.

The filings split restructuring costs only by segment, with Thrive and other restructuring counted together, and nothing in them establishes whether or how many roles were cut at any one business. Segment-wide, Risk and Insurance Services, meaning Marsh Risk and Guy Carpenter, carried $134 million of 2025's $222 million in total restructuring and $66 million of the $103 million booked in the first half of 2026. Consulting, meaning Mercer and Marsh Management Consulting, the old Oliver Wyman Group, carried $64 million and $21 million. Thrive's own share was $150 million in 2025 and $89 million in the 2026 half. Severance alone was charged at $174 million in 2025 and $74 million in the first half of 2026.

Thrive wasn't the first pass. Insurance Business reported in January 2023 that the company had made headcount reductions and booked $233 million in non-JLT restructuring costs in the fourth quarter of 2022. That action paid out severance, the outlet reported, and Doyle said it didn't reach people hired in a 2021 and 2022 recruitment drive. The 10-K says the program finished at the end of 2024 after $221 million of costs that year. Our WARN filing tracker holds one Marsh McLennan filing in all, a Mercer (US) Inc. notice in Houston dated April 12, 2016, for 71 jobs, and none since the start of 2025. Marsh described itself as having more than 95,000 colleagues in its July 2026 results release.

If you're a US employee, Marsh's termination benefits guide, written with plan information as of January 1, 2026, has the dates that matter. Medical, dental and vision coverage end on your last day of employment. The COBRA package is mailed to the home address on file, so correct it before you leave if you've moved. The election period runs 60 days following termination, the first premium is due 45 days after you elect, and COBRA medical coverage takes effect the day after your last day, at the full cost plus an administrative fee. How COBRA works sets out what to weigh before those 60 days run out.

Check the names on your paperwork too. The brand went from Marsh McLennan to Marsh on January 14, 2026, Mercer's switch to the Marsh brand was set for September 1, and Guy Carpenter has been rebranded Marsh Re. The June 2026 filing still names Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc. and its subsidiaries. If you work in New York, the labor department says the state WARN Act covers private employers with 50 or more full-time employees in the state and reaches closings affecting 25 or more employees, layoffs of 25 or more full-time workers who make up at least 33% of a site, and layoffs of 250 or more. Covered employers owe 90 days' notice, the regulations address remote work, and an employer that skips required notice may be required to pay back wages and benefits and a civil penalty. New York's unemployment page covers the claim, and if a severance agreement lands in front of you, get the signing deadline in writing and read up on negotiating one before that date.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Marsh McLennan?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Marsh McLennan?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Marsh McLennan?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
