Laid off from MasterBrand.

When closing notices went out in 2024 at MasterBrand's Statesville and Liberty plants in North Carolina, the company offered to help those workers relocate to Kinston if openings existed. In 2026 it announced cuts to Kinston's own workforce, tying them to a plant review for its American Woodmark merger.

The most recent MasterBrand layoff we've found

In October 2026, American Woodmark told Indiana it would lay off 207 Gas City workers starting December 5, a change a MasterBrand spokesperson tied to the merger's network assessment, Inside Indiana Business reported in a story 21Alive carried.

What MasterBrand layoffs have meant for employees

MasterBrand has said plainly where its 2026 plant cuts came from. The Kinston decision stems from a review of the company's manufacturing network that's part of its merger with American Woodmark, a spokesperson told Neuse News, and Inside Indiana Business, whose story 21Alive ran, quoted the company calling Gas City's change the result of a merger network assessment integral to the deal's targeted synergies. In both places the company said the plant would keep running while some of its work moved to MasterBrand plants in other states. For anyone in the affected jobs, the company's plan sends the work itself to plants several states away. MasterBrand said people at both plants could apply for other roles, including some with relocation benefits. If you're weighing one of those, pricing the move against the relocation benefit for that particular opening, if it has one, gives a clearer answer than the job title alone.

Kinston has been the destination before. When Dura Supreme's Statesville plant and Norcraft's Liberty plant were closing, a MasterBrand spokesperson told Furniture Today the company would help relocate those workers to Kinston if jobs opened there, a drive of 3.5 hours from Statesville and just over two from Liberty. When MasterBrand announced the 2026 cut, Kinston had recently taken on Ultracraft's frameless production, and that's the work the company says will stay, while the plant's other lines are set to leave. The company didn't say how many Kinston workers would transfer rather than leave. If MasterBrand proposes moving you to another plant, Kinston's record belongs in the weighing, since it went from the plant the company offered as a destination in 2024 to one where it announced cuts in 2026.

For American Woodmark's Gas City workers, the scheduled dates matter for one more reason. Layoffs set for December 5 through January 8, 2027 fall inside the merger's first year, counted from the May 28, 2026 effective date in MasterBrand's quarterly report, and that year is the window the one-year severance covenant in the merger agreement covers. The dates alone don't make anyone covered, because the covenant reaches only American Woodmark employees who kept working for MasterBrand or its subsidiaries when the merger took effect, the agreement's Continuing Employees, and it carves out exceptions listed in disclosure schedules. If you count as a Continuing Employee, no schedule exception applies to you and MasterBrand offers you a package within that year that looks thinner overall than the American Woodmark plan you were eligible for in August 2025, that shortfall is the gap the covenant was written about, even though the agreement gives you no way to enforce it yourself.

About 81 percent of MasterBrand's associates were hourly production and distribution workers as 2025 ended, while the early-2026 separation program reduced headcount primarily in corporate functions. Union coverage is uneven. The company's annual filing for 2025 put about 32 percent of associates under collective bargaining agreements, while the notices behind the Gas City, Statesville and Liberty cuts said the affected workers there had no union, and the two North Carolina notices gave no bumping rights. The same filing ties restructuring charges of $18.0 million in 2024 and $15.2 million in 2025, largely severance, to aligning the workforce with forecast demand. Its $10.1 million for 2023 was primarily severance-related and included an impairment tied to the decision to permanently close Newton, Kansas, which had been idled.

MasterBrand Cabinets filed plant closing notices long before the merger, at Hillsboro, Oregon in 2007, Martinsville, Virginia in 2012 and Auburn, Alabama in 2018, by the state records in our WARN tracker. The 2025 and 2026 notices went to North Carolina, Indiana, Virginia and California, and our unemployment pages for North Carolina, Indiana, Virginia and California set out how filing works in each.

What severance has MasterBrand given laid-off employees?

For the 2026 cuts at Kinston and Gas City, MasterBrand described enhanced severance packages with pay and benefits continuation, outplacement support and help reaching workforce resources, according to Neuse News and 21Alive. For the 2024 Statesville and Liberty closings it cited transition assistance or severance pay and aid with benefit costs, Furniture Today reported. None of those accounts puts a dollar figure, a length or a formula on the packages.

Is MasterBrand closing the Kinston plant?

Not the whole plant, by the company's account. A MasterBrand spokesperson told Neuse News that about 180 people would stay at Kinston making frameless cabinetry and components, including Ultracraft frameless production that had recently moved there, while the rest of the plant's production is to go to three other states.

Do American Woodmark employees keep their severance after the MasterBrand merger?

Through the first year after the deal closed, or while someone stayed employed if that's shorter, the merger agreement has MasterBrand keeping severance for continuing American Woodmark employees no less favorable in the aggregate than the American Woodmark plan they were eligible for as of August 2025, apart from disclosure-schedule exceptions. Union contracts and individual employment agreements take precedence. The agreement says the promise is solely for the benefit of the parties to the agreement and gives employees no rights or remedies under it.
