Micron layoff history

Micron announced the reduction on December 21, 2022, in response to what its filing called challenging industry conditions, and put the plan at approximately 10% of headcount over calendar year 2023, through a combination of voluntary attrition and personnel reductions. Sanjay Mehrotra told investors that "the industry is experiencing the most severe imbalance between supply and demand in both DRAM and NAND in the last 13 years." Bonuses for 2023 were suspended company-wide and executive salaries cut for the rest of the fiscal year. Then in February the target moved. Employees got an email raising it by another five points, and a Micron spokesman confirmed the total was now expected to reach 15% in 2023.

Micron's later filings say the reduction approached 15% by the end of calendar 2023 and was substantially complete by that summer. Fifteen percent of the roughly 48,000 people it reported that September is about 7,200 roles, which is arithmetic rather than a count of anyone. What the company measured was headcount, and headcount falls when people leave on their own as well as when they're let go. Roughly half of the original target was meant to come from attrition, and the spokesman said some organizations and regions would run above the company average while others would run below. Micron didn't say publicly which ones, and nothing in the reporting we track records it doing so since.

Our WARN tracker holds very little under Micron's name. Two filings all time, a 2009 Boise notice covering 2,000 jobs and a 2017 Milpitas notice covering 57. Nothing has joined them in the years since, and the 2023 reduction produced no Micron row in the state archives we collect. A zero there describes state notice lists and nothing more, so read it as the absence of a filing rather than proof that no job was lost.

One Boise layoff from that stretch does sit in the tracker, under someone else's name. Exyte, the general contractor building Micron's fab off Federal Way, told the Idaho Department of Labor that its contract for the Triton project had been "unexpectedly permanently discontinued by Micron" effective September 2, 2025, and permanently laid off 201 workers, mostly in construction management and engineering. The row in our data reads Exyte. If you worked that site, Exyte is the employer on your paperwork, and Exyte's name is the one your notice and your separation terms come from. Its letter to the state also said the jobs were temporary. Micron's spokesperson said the company had selected another general contractor and left it there.

By then the workforce picture had already reversed. Micron reported about 43,000 employees when fiscal 2023 closed, and about 53,000 two years after that, roughly ten thousand more people, and it has signed CHIPS Act funding agreements worth up to $6.4 billion covering fabs in Idaho and New York and the Manassas plant in Virginia. In August 2026 it opened a training center on the Boise campus. The severance line didn't vanish along the way. Fiscal 2025 still books $30 million of employee severance against $163 million in 2023, and the nine months to May 2026 book none.

Sitting with a Micron separation agreement, or watching the cycle and wondering whether a cut is coming for you, is a hard place to be, and none of the record above settles what your own separation pays. The only severance document in that record covers executive officers, capping their cash severance at 2.99 times salary plus target bonus without a shareholder vote, and it reaches nobody below them. That leaves your own agreement as the binding version. Read the notice period, the payout formula, how far the health coverage runs and what happens to unvested equity, compare all of it against what you were told in the room, and get the written answer before you sign anything.

How Micron's layoffs compare to other companies

Micron's business runs on memory pricing, and its headcount has swung with it in both directions. The company that reduced itself by about 15% through the end of 2023 reported about 53,000 employees by August 2025, more than it had before the cut. Neither figure tells you what your own separation pays, because there are no terms on record below the executive officers, and an up cycle isn't a promise about the next down one.
