What Micron layoffs have meant for employees

Micron announced the reduction on December 21, 2022, in response to what its filing called challenging industry conditions, and put the plan at approximately 10% of headcount over calendar year 2023, through a combination of voluntary attrition and personnel reductions. Sanjay Mehrotra told investors that "the industry is experiencing the most severe imbalance between supply and demand in both DRAM and NAND in the last 13 years." Employee bonuses for 2023 were suspended and executive salaries cut for the rest of the fiscal year. Then in February the target moved. Employees got an email raising it by another five points, and a Micron spokesman confirmed the higher total.

Micron's later filings say the reduction was substantially completed in the third quarter of fiscal 2023. What the company measured was headcount, and headcount falls when people leave on their own as well as when they're let go. Roughly half of the original target was meant to come from attrition, and the spokesman said some organizations and regions would run above the company average while others would run below. The company said that attrition would keep running through the end of 2023, so for people who stayed past the February notices the reduction carried on as colleagues left and weren't replaced.

One Boise layoff tied to Micron does sit in our WARN tracker, under someone else's name. Exyte, the general contractor building Micron's fab off Federal Way, told the Idaho Department of Labor that its contract for the Triton project had been "unexpectedly permanently discontinued by Micron" effective September 2, 2025, and permanently laid off 201 workers, mostly in construction management and engineering. The row in our data reads Exyte. For those 201 workers, Exyte was the employer and the company that filed the WARN notice. Its letter to the state also said the jobs were temporary. Micron's spokesperson said the company had selected another general contractor and left it there. Exyte's spokesperson told the Idaho Statesman that it kept its design role on the fab's first phase and remained active in the Boise area, including through Exentec, an Exyte company that had expanded production in Nampa.

By then the workforce picture had already reversed. Micron reported about 43,000 employees when fiscal 2023 closed, and about 53,000 two years after that, roughly ten thousand more people, and it has signed CHIPS Act funding agreements worth up to $6.4 billion covering fabs in Idaho and New York and the Manassas plant in Virginia. In August 2026 it opened a training center near the Boise campus. Its release says the center also serves community college students and career seekers in College of Western Idaho semiconductor programs, which makes it worth knowing about for anyone around Boise weighing that kind of work. The severance line didn't vanish along the way. Fiscal 2025 still books $30 million of employee severance against $163 million in 2023.

The only severance document in the record covers executive officers, capping their cash severance at 2.99 times salary plus target bonus without a shareholder vote, and it reaches nobody below them. Even for those officers, the policy leaves equity vesting, earned but unpaid bonuses, 401(k) matches and accrued salary and vacation out of the cash severance it caps.
