Mondelez layoff history
If restructuring talk at Mondelez has you rereading every calendar invite, the company's filings put a dollar figure on it and stop there. That's a hard kind of limbo, whether you're waiting for news or holding a letter. Mondelez booked $24 million of severance and related charges in the fourth quarter of 2025 for actions to cut costs and streamline operations, then $59 million more in the first half of 2026, $11 million of it in the second quarter. That's $83 million through June, $48 million of it in the first quarter. The 10-Q says the Europe segment mainly carried the actions out, working on the supply chain network and overhead. It names no plant or head count, and our tracker has no Mondelez filing dated 2025 or later.
On the April 28, 2026 earnings call, COO and CFO Luca Zaramella said about 60% of the US manufacturing network had been modernized and some plants in the rest ran on high waste, with productivity "below expectations", and that Mondelez wanted to bring lines now made by co-manufacturers in-house, adding "We will save quite a bit of money". He also described automation and AI at up to five distribution centers serving 55 direct-store-delivery branches. No job count came with any of it, and the reporting we track doesn't connect it to layoffs. If you work in a US plant or a DSD branch, know your seniority date and where your paperwork is.
In February 2025 about 1,000 BCTGM members at the Portland, Chicago and Richmond, Virginia bakeries and three distribution centers ratified a five-year Mondelez-Nabisco contract that runs through February 28, 2030, with local agreements on top. If you're one of them, ask your local which national or local provisions govern layoffs and seniority before you need the answer. The 2016 Chicago cut shows why. That January the first 277 notices of a planned 600 cuts at the bakery went to workers with eight years or less, in reverse seniority order, and the union sued.
Outside the union, a plan approved in May 2025 was written for Mondelez's Section 16 officers and any other employees its compensation committee designates. On a termination without cause or a resignation for good reason, it provided 12 months of base salary, a health stipend, a year of outplacement and, for exits between March 31 and December 31, a prorated target bonus, as long as the person signed a release and didn't revoke it. If that plan doesn't cover you, read the separation letter itself for what it pays, what it asks you to give up and the date you have to sign by. In Illinois, where Mondelez has its principal executive offices, the law doesn't require severance on its own, so it comes down to a policy or agreement, but a policy can't take back vacation you've already earned, pro rata days included. If you work there, check that balance on your final pay before signing.
The US closures on record are older. In May 2023 Mondelez said it would close the Enjoy Life Foods plant in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and its 105 jobs, in rounds planned through April 2024, and in February 2021 it announced the closing of the Atlanta and Fair Lawn bakeries, about 1,000 positions between them. Our tracker counts 15 Mondelez filings all-time, including rows filed as Nabisco, Kraft Foods Global, Clif Bar and Enjoy Life Foods, and the WARN filings page is where to look for any new Mondelez notice in your state.

What to do after being laid off from Mondelez
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Mondelez's biggest hubs: Illinois, New Jersey, Georgia, California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Mondelez's hub states run: Illinois, New Jersey, Georgia, California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Mondelez layoff and severance questions
Is Mondelez laying off employees in 2026?
Its filings show severance being booked. Mondelez recorded $59 million in severance and related charges in the first half of 2026 for a restructuring begun in late 2025, which its 10-Q places mainly in the Europe segment, with no sites or job counts named. Our tracker shows no Mondelez notice dated 2025 or later.
Does Mondelez give severance to laid-off employees?
It has depended on who and where. The only severance formula on record from Mondelez is a May 2025 plan for its Section 16 officers and employees its compensation committee designates, which provided a year of base salary and other benefits on a termination without cause or a resignation for good reason, as long as the person signed a release and didn't revoke it. In 2021 a spokesperson said Atlanta and Fair Lawn workers would discuss severance or transition support with executives, with no amounts reported. For the restructuring begun in late 2025, no terms are on record.
Did Mondelez lay off Clif Bar employees?
By former employees' accounts, yes. Mondelez bought Clif Bar in 2022 for $2.9 billion, and former staff told the E'ville Eye in April 2025 that rounds over two years had cut the Emeryville workforce, from a headquarters peak of more than 400 people, to reportedly less than a quarter of what it had been. Those are unverified employee reports.
Is Mondelez closing plants in the US?
No US plant closure announced after Enjoy Life's Jeffersonville, Indiana plant in May 2023 turns up in the reporting we track. In April 2026 the COO and CFO said some plants in the less modern 40% of the US network ran on high waste and would have to work with much simpler lines, without naming one or giving job figures.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Mondelez?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Mondelez's biggest U.S. hubs are Illinois, New Jersey, Georgia, California. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Mondelez?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Mondelez?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Mondelez?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
