Laid off from The Mosaic Company.
Mosaic said it planned to restart the sites it idled in 2026 once conditions allowed. Earlier shutdowns went both ways. Colonsay potash miners were called back in 2016, while a Plant City shutdown called likely temporary turned permanent in 2019.

What The Mosaic Company layoffs have meant for employees
The 2026 cuts don't share one explanation, and which one applies to you changes what a restart could mean. Mosaic pointed to sulfur and talked about resuming in Florida, per FOX 13, and in Louisiana, per WBRZ. At Araxá, the second-quarter 10-Q lays out a plan to divest the complex and put capital toward higher-return opportunities, and the May 2026 earnings call left both Brazilian sites at strategic alternatives, including a potential sale. The April workforce reduction was framed as streamlining support functions, and the call gave savings with no headcount or location. So the restart talk belongs to the U.S. phosphate plants. If you were at Araxá or in a support role, the plan on record points elsewhere.
Idling at Mosaic hasn't always emptied a site, though what stayed differed by place. The South Fort Meade notice planned on a core group for care, maintenance, safety and environmental compliance, Colonsay's 2020 plan, per CKOM, was for about 45 positions doing safety and regulatory checks and minimal maintenance, and the 10-Q puts Patrocínio at minimal staffing. If you're offered both a place in one of those groups and severance, how long that job is expected to last may matter as much as the pay, and so may what accepting it does to the severance. The fiscal 2025 10-K calls Colonsay a swing mine run to meet market demands, with more capacity reachable by increasing staffing and investment. For a former Colonsay worker, that's the company's own account of a mine whose output and staffing it sets by the market.
At South Fort Meade, the number on the notice didn't settle who was affected. The Fort Meade report said the final breakdown by job title wasn't out, and that it was unclear how many hourly workers would use bumping rights under their union contract to move into other positions. The Chemical Workers Union Council of UFCW Local 814C represents those hourly workers. So Florida's count won't show whether your own job is one of those on the notice. If that contract covers you, it may be worth working out which positions you could move into and which you'd take if it came to that. Louisiana has its own version of this question. Ammonia kept running at Faustina while phosphate stopped, so a site's name on a notice doesn't tell you whether your unit is included.
Plant City shows how one shutdown can split people by exit. Some employees were offered early retirement, and Mosaic told Tampa Bay 28 that severance packages would go to those not staying, so workers at one plant could go out on different terms. If you're near retirement and an early retirement offer arrives alongside severance, the two are worth pricing against each other, including what each does to any health coverage or pension you have through Mosaic.
In Brazil, the headcount and the package came from the union. Both rest on what the Araxá union's president said in Diário do Comércio, and the company's statement spoke of staff reductions in general terms. Agreements with 33 unions covered everyone on Mosaic's Brazil payroll as of December 31, 2025, that 10-K says. The 1,200 was a union's expectation at the time, and it's worth holding any later total up against it.
In Florida, state and local leaders were to work alongside the company on connecting staff with employment resources, that same report said. The two U.S. notices went to Florida and Louisiana, and there's more on claims in each at Florida unemployment benefits and Louisiana unemployment benefits.

Mosaic announced the end of activities at Araxá on April 8, and the union told Diário do Comércio it expected more than 1,200 dismissals. What to do if you're laid off from The Mosaic Company
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. The Mosaic Company's biggest hubs: Florida, Louisiana. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what The Mosaic Company's hub states run: Florida, Louisiana, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
The Mosaic Company layoff and severance questions
What severance has The Mosaic Company given laid-off employees?
The Araxá union told Diário do Comércio in April 2026 of an agreement, valid for 60 days, giving workers it represents three salaries on top of standard termination pay plus six months on the health plan, and the second-quarter 10-Q reports about $10 million in total for severance and related employee costs from the Brazil idling. Mosaic told Tampa Bay 28 in 2017 that departing Plant City employees would get severance packages. Neither Tampa TV coverage nor WBRZ reported severance terms for the 2026 Florida and Louisiana layoffs.
Why is The Mosaic Company idling South Fort Meade?
Mosaic cited supply chain challenges and extraordinary sulfur costs in the notice FOX 13 described. A University of South Florida professor told the station that 40% to 45% of the world's sulfur moves through the Strait of Hormuz each year.
Will The Mosaic Company reopen South Fort Meade?
Mosaic said it expected the shutdown to last more than six months and planned to resume as soon as market conditions and sulfur availability allowed a safe, reliable restart, according to a Tampa TV report. Company officials gave WBRZ a similar line on Louisiana, planning to pursue full operations again as market conditions improve.
How many WARN notices has The Mosaic Company filed?
Three rows in our WARN tracker match Mosaic, a 216-job IMC Global row from Illinois in 2004, a 430-job Plant City row from 2017 and the 206-job Louisiana row from August 2026. IMC counts because Mosaic's fiscal 2025 10-K traces the company to IMC's October 2004 combination with Cargill's fertilizer businesses. Florida's 2026 list shows the South Fort Meade notice, which isn't among the three because our Florida archive ends August 13, 2026.
