Laid off from Newmont.

Newmont's cuts after it bought Newcrest reached executives and senior managers in late 2024 and its lower ranks in 2025. Its 2019 cuts on record were in Nevada, at its Carlin mines and then when it folded its mines into a Barrick-run venture.

What Newmont layoffs have meant for employees

Which company actually employs you decides which layoff record is yours. On July 1, 2019, Newmont combined its Nevada mines with Barrick's to form Nevada Gold Mines, a venture Barrick operates and Newmont owns 38.5% of, and its 2025 annual report also records the sale of the Cripple Creek & Victor mine in Colorado to SSR on February 28, 2025. Newmont's own 2025 notices, starting with its August 27 letter, name the headquarters on East Layton Avenue in Denver and the Malozemoff Technical Facility in Englewood. If your paycheck came from Nevada Gold Mines, or from Cripple Creek & Victor after that February sale, the announcements and filings of that employer are the ones that speak to your job.

The record starts with leadership and ends with the working levels. The late-2024 reports were about executives, senior managers, general managers and directors, Bloomberg reported in a story MINING.COM carried, and every title on Newmont's first Colorado list was a Head or Group Head. By the final stage of Project Catalyst, the memo Reuters saw described cuts at the levels that hold superintendents, specialists, operators and maintainers, as MINING.COM reported in November 2025. Its final-stage figures, roughly 12% of roles at Level of Work 2 and about 10% at Level of Work 1, are shares of positions rather than counts of people. The leadership cuts that came early didn't mean the rest of the staff was spared, and if your work sits at one of those levels, the memo's account speaks to your part of the company more directly than the early coverage of executive exits did.

For the people on the headquarters notices, the letters set out the same terms each time. The August letter and the two that supplemented it, the October 1 letter and the October 15 letter, each said the layoffs were expected to be permanent, that the impacted employees weren't represented by unions and had no bumping rights, and that they'd be offered severance under Newmont's severance plan. The first two also promised each employee at least 60 days' notice ahead of separation, a line the October 15 letter leaves out. Every separation date in them was an expectation, written as on or about a given day, so it marked a plan for that phase. If your job was on one of these notices, the severance plan is the benefit they point to. Across the whole company the picture differs, with about 27% of the workforce in a union or taking part in collective bargaining at year-end 2025, as the annual report counted it.

Newmont's own accounts show the program's scale. The annual report records $186 million in restructuring and severance for 2025, against $38 million in 2024 and $24 million in 2023, and says the 2025 figure is primarily severance for workforce reductions, with the cost of closing certain offices and related consulting, under a plan management committed to beginning in the third quarter of that year. It puts most of the plan's cash outlays in the fourth quarter or early 2026 and the rest by the first quarter of 2027. That schedule tracks Newmont's spending across the whole plan, and it doesn't date anyone's individual payment. The September 2026 quarterly report shows the costs still running in 2026, at $25 million through September, well below the 2025 pace.

If your Newmont job was in Denver or Englewood, Colorado unemployment benefits covers filing in the state that received all three 2025 letters. Nevada, where Newmont's 2019 notices were filed, has its own rules in Nevada unemployment benefits. In our WARN tracker, Newmont's notices appear as Newmont, Newmont North America and Newmont Goldcorp, the last two from Nevada in 2019.

Newmont layoff and severance questions

What severance has Newmont given laid-off employees?

Newmont's August 27, October 1 and October 15 letters to Colorado in 2025 each promised that impacted employees would be offered severance in accordance with Newmont's severance plan. Its 2026 proxy says non-officers once under the executive severance plan, which reached down to senior directors, moved to the Severance Plan for Salaried Employees on November 1, 2024, and it spells out severance pay only for its Section 16 officers.

What happens to my Newmont pension if I'm laid off?

If you were in Newmont's Stable Value Pension Plan and left during its 2025 workforce reduction, its 2026 proxy says your accrued benefit became fully vested regardless of years of service, under what it calls a partial plan termination. Otherwise, benefits under the plan generally don't vest until five whole years of service, and the proxy says severance payments don't count as pensionable earnings.

Is Newmont still laying off workers in 2026?

Our WARN tracker has no Newmont notice dated 2026. Newmont's restructuring and severance costs carried into the year, $25 million through September by its third-quarter report, a fraction of the $186 million its 2025 annual report records for 2025.

How many jobs did Newmont cut in 2025?

No companywide count of Newmont's 2025 layoffs is on record, and the roughly 16% of the workforce a memo Reuters saw put under its post-Newcrest overhaul isn't one, since that share includes vacancies left open and role levels changed, as MINING.COM reported. Nor is the fall in year-end employees from about 22,200 to about 17,500 in that story and Newmont's 2025 10-K, which can also reflect departures and the mines it sold. What's firm is 107 jobs on its three 2025 Colorado notices in our WARN tracker.
