Nordstrom's Last Chance outlet in Lombard closes with 101 jobs on the notice

Nordstrom confirmed the closure of its Last Chance clearance store at Yorktown Center in Lombard, Illinois, and said the last day of business would be September 1, 2026. The WARN notice it posted on August 7 covers 101 employees, and TheStreet reported the separations as effective October 5. Nordstrom said the decision followed successful efforts to streamline inventory management, and that it was working with affected employees to find other roles.

Nordstrom layoff history

Nordstrom cut in named pieces rather than in one announcement. Two Massachusetts stores went first in early 2025, the St. Louis Galleria followed in August, the downtown Portland Rack closed at the end of January 2026, and the Last Chance outlet in Lombard drew a notice in August 2026. Our tracker holds 35 filings covering 1,035 jobs since the start of 2025 across twelve states, and 66 filings all-time. If you were cut, your round has a name and a date on it, which makes your own paperwork easier to check than it would be inside a company-wide program.

The people in those filings didn't all do the same job. Nordstrom's last annual report as a public company put the workforce at about 55,000 as of February 2025, with roughly 80 percent supporting stores and about 10 percent in the supply chain network, and it recorded about 28,000 of those employees, 52 percent, as part-time or seasonal. The store closures took salespeople, logistics processors, counter managers, baristas, tailors and alterations sewers. The credit filings took collections representatives, fraud investigators and support analysts out of one office in Centennial, Colorado. Those are different populations in different situations. Some store employees were offered transfers to other Nordstrom locations, while the credit work moved to another company, with Nordstrom saying TD intended to offer roles to a majority of its team members subject to customary eligibility.

Nordstrom's own WARN letters are unusually specific about what affected employees got, and it amounts to less than it first sounds. The Oregon letter for the Portland Rack said employees would continue on payroll, with their regular wages and benefits, through their separation date. The Minnesota letter covering the credit transition said the same. That's continuation, and it stops when the separation date arrives. Both letters recorded no union representation and no bumping rights at those locations. Both described transfers for some people while saying the company hadn't yet decided who would be offered one, and the Missouri notice put it the same way.

The ownership change matters for what you can see and for one term you might be owed. The Nordstrom family and El Puerto de Liverpool completed the buyout on May 20, 2025, Erik and Pete Nordstrom took over as co-CEOs, and the stock stopped trading the next morning. The merger proxy filed before that closing said the buyer would hold each continuing employee's base pay no less favorable in the aggregate for a year, and would match the severance arrangements already in place for anyone cut in a qualifying termination during that year, though it left those arrangements in a disclosure letter rather than stating them. That year ran from the May 2025 closing. Separately, a law firm said in June 2025 that it was investigating whether the St. Louis notice gave the 60 days the federal WARN Act requires, and that late or unclear notice can leave an employer owing its workers wages and benefits for however long the violation lasted.

Three things in your own paperwork are worth checking before anything else. Find your separation date and confirm that pay and benefits actually ran to it, since that's the only promise either letter makes. Get any transfer offer, or written confirmation that none is coming, because the letters left that open. And if your job ended within a year of May 20, 2025, ask in writing which severance arrangement applied to you, since the proxy preserved one without publishing it. Then check with your state's unemployment agency about when to file, and read your state's own record next to what our tracker holds, which doesn't have a row for every closure, including two full-line stores reported closed in 2026.

How Nordstrom's layoffs compare to other companies

Against the Macy's record in our tracker, Nordstrom's cuts run smaller and more surgical, named stores and functions rather than national programs. Going private in 2025 removed the quarterly disclosure rhythm, which makes the state filings the most reliable remaining record of where cuts actually land.

What to do after being laid off from Nordstrom

  1. File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Nordstrom's biggest hubs: Washington, Colorado, Massachusetts, Illinois. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
  2. Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Nordstrom's hub states run: Washington, Colorado, Massachusetts, Illinois, and every other state is here.
  3. Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
  4. Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
  5. Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.

Nordstrom layoff and severance questions

What severance does Nordstrom pay in layoffs?

Nordstrom hasn't published terms for any round we track. In the credit-operations wind-down and at the Portland Rack, employees kept regular wages and benefits through their separation dates, which is continuation, not severance. The merger proxy did promise that for one year after the May 2025 closing, a continuing employee cut in a qualifying termination would get severance no less favorable in the aggregate than the arrangements already in place, but it left those arrangements in a disclosure letter instead of stating them. Whatever package accompanies your separation is individually issued, and it's the only version that counts.

Why did Nordstrom credit employees lose their jobs?

Nordstrom moved its credit-card operations to TD Bank, and 43 Colorado employees were permanently separated in phases as the transition ran. The company's own WARN letter said the Centennial site wasn't closing and that only a few employees would remain after the move. Nordstrom also said TD had expressed an intent to offer roles to a majority of its team members, subject to customary eligibility, so the successor institution is worth a direct application.

Is Nordstrom still required to file WARN notices as a private company?

Going private didn't stop the filings. Our tracker holds 35 Nordstrom filings since the start of 2025, dated both before and after the deal closed in May 2025, and Nordstrom's own WARN letters to Minnesota and Oregon carry November and December 2025 dates, months after its stock stopped trading. State filings are now the most visible record of its cuts.

Did Nordstrom offer transfers instead of layoffs?

In several closures it offered some people a transfer and said so in the notice. Nordstrom told Oregon that certain Portland Rack employees would be offered the opportunity to move to other locations and that it hadn't yet decided who, and it told Missouri the same thing about the St. Louis Galleria store. That wording matters, because a transfer offer that never arrives leaves the separation date the letter already named. Ask for the offer, or for confirmation that none is coming, in writing.

Which Nordstrom stores closed in 2025 and 2026?

The named ones on record are Northshore Mall in Peabody and South Shore Plaza in Braintree in early 2025, the St. Louis Galleria in August 2025, the downtown Portland Rack at the end of January 2026, and the Last Chance outlet in Lombard with a stated last day of September 1, 2026. TheStreet also reported full-line closures at Christiana Mall in Delaware in April 2026 and at Galleria Dallas in May 2026, neither of which has a row in our tracker.

Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Nordstrom?

In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Nordstrom's biggest U.S. hubs are Washington, Colorado, Massachusetts, Illinois. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.

Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Nordstrom?

Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.

What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Nordstrom?

Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.

Should I sign the severance agreement right away?

First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.

Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Nordstrom?

Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
