Laid off from Panasonic.
In the pandemic, Panasonic's in-flight entertainment arm cut California and Washington jobs, then took some people back while federal payroll aid lasted. Its 2025 restructuring fell mostly in Japan; our tracker's only US notice since then came from Panasonic Well LLC in Palo Alto.

The most recent Panasonic layoff we've found
In May 2026, Panasonic put the restructuring it carried out in the year to March at 12,000 fewer employees, 8,000 in Japan and 4,000 overseas, above the 10,000 it had planned, in its Group Growth Strategy briefing, where it also listed a planned transfer of its automotive motor businesses.
What Panasonic layoffs have meant for employees
Panasonic's layoff notices since 2020 name the unit doing the cutting, Panasonic Avionics for the pandemic notices in Lake Forest and Bothell and Panasonic Well LLC for the 2025 one in Palo Alto. Older notices go by other names, Matsushita on the oldest and SANYO Solare of Oregon LLC on a 2013 Salem notice. If you're after a notice from those years, our WARN tracker has them under those names, so it's worth searching the old name as well as the new one.
The Avionics notices also show why adding up layoff filings can mislead. Panasonic Avionics makes in-flight entertainment systems and had about 2,000 people in Lake Forest before the pandemic, per the Orange County Business Journal, which also quoted a spokeswoman saying temporary reduced schedules had reached the employees who stayed. The 221 employees it brought back under the government's Payroll Support Program in 2021 had all been affected by its 2020 workforce reduction, as a company spokesman explained to APEX Media. A Panasonic Avionics notice for 221 jobs takes effect on the day their pay ran out. Those 221 had been through the 2020 reduction already, so the 2021 notice and the 2020 ones can describe the same people. The company also said a report of a 13% Lake Forest cut was describing them, and that it was hiring new staff.
Panasonic's global restructuring was pointed at particular kinds of work. Its May 2025 release aimed the personnel review mainly at sales and indirect departments, alongside ending loss-making businesses and merging or closing sites, and said the cuts would follow each country's labor laws. It put the year's structural reform costs at 130 billion yen, a figure it said could move with the number of employees involved. On the February 2026 call, management said the workforce reduction was likely to grow past its 10,000 target, with more people still applying, and described the employees leaving as having made the decision after thinking it over. The May 2026 briefing then listed consolidated sales and indirect functions and more than 20 sites closed, merged or downsized worldwide. If your job is in sales or an indirect department at a Panasonic unit, that's the work the plan was mainly aimed at.
Umi came up on that call alongside the planned dissolution of Panasonic WELL Headquarters. Management said Panasonic's Umi and Yohana services hadn't shown they could scale and make money and would be paused while the company thought them through again, and that its consumer AI work would carry on in its smart life business. If you worked on those services and are weighing a move inside Panasonic, the smart life business is where management placed that work.
The Salem letter shows what that closing looked like for the people in it. When Panasonic announced the plant's closing, its WARN letter told Oregon that every employee was being given their own separation date, that the separation was permanent, and that it included a schedule of job losses by position. Its November 6 date marked only the first separations, so an employee's own date there could come later, and the letter warned that the timing could still shift. The letter said employees had no bumping rights because the facility itself was ceasing operation.
For the states where Panasonic's recent notices were filed and where, per Manufacturing Dive, its Nevada battery site sits, the claim rules are at California unemployment benefits, Washington unemployment benefits, Oregon unemployment benefits and Nevada unemployment benefits.
A sourced history of Panasonic layoffs
November 2025, Panasonic Well's Palo Alto layoff notice
Panasonic Well LLC set a permanent layoff of 46 people in Palo Alto for January 31, 2026, California's WARN report shows. Panasonic told analysts on a February 2026 earnings call that "Panasonic WELL Headquarters will be dissolved as of the end of March."
May 2025, Panasonic's global personnel optimization plan
Panasonic's "personnel optimization" targeted 10,000 employees at its consolidated companies, 5,000 in Japan and 5,000 overseas, its May 9, 2025 release said, to be carried out mostly in the fiscal year then under way.
September 2021, Panasonic Avionics' payroll-support recall ends
Panasonic Avionics let employees from its 2020 cut rejoin while it was in the federal Payroll Support Program in 2021, a spokesman told APEX Media, and the 221 who accepted kept full salary and benefits until September 30.
April 2020, Panasonic Avionics' pandemic layoffs begin
Panasonic Avionics filed to lay off 223 in Lake Forest, about 10% of its staff there, and a spokeswoman told the Orange County Business Journal it had made furloughs too. Later Avionics notices, for 589 jobs there and 135 in Bothell, are in our WARN tracker.
September 2017, Salem solar plant closing
Panasonic Eco Solutions Solar America announced a total closing of its Salem plant, promising severance and job placement support in a WARN letter to Oregon. The 92 final layoffs were set to begin November 6, a pv magazine USA report said.
April 2016, layoffs at the Salem solar plant
The Salem plant laid off 50 workers in April 2016, a later pv magazine USA report recounted, after opening as Sanyo Solar in 2009 and employing 200 at its height.
What to do if you're laid off from Panasonic
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Panasonic's biggest hubs: California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Panasonic's hub states run: California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Panasonic layoff and severance questions
Is Panasonic laying off employees in 2026?
Panasonic's job cuts reached into 2026. It counted 12,000 reductions worldwide in the fiscal year that ended in March 2026, its May 2026 strategy briefing says, and in the US, Panasonic Well's 46-person layoff in Palo Alto was effective January 31, 2026, the date California's WARN report gives. No notice dated 2026 under Panasonic's names has reached our WARN tracker.
What severance has Panasonic given laid-off employees?
When Panasonic announced its Salem solar plant's closing in 2017, it told Oregon in a WARN letter that "both severance and job placement support will be provided." Panasonic Avionics' 2021 terms came through the federal Payroll Support Program instead, with rejoined employees on full salary and benefits while the company took part, a spokesman told APEX Media. That was program pay rather than a severance package, and those who'd re-enrolled in health and dental coverage were eligible to continue it, with dependents, for up to 18 months after their layoffs.
Did Panasonic's 10,000 job cuts include the US?
Panasonic put 4,000 of its reductions outside Japan in its May 2026 tally, and neither that tally nor the May 2025 announcement splits them by country. In the US, the one Panasonic filing from 2025 on in our WARN tracker is Panasonic Well LLC's Palo Alto notice, which California's report dates November 24, 2025.
Has Panasonic laid off workers at its battery plants in Nevada or Kansas?
Neither our WARN tracker, whose Nevada records skip 2021 and 2022 and whose Kansas ones stop at May 1, 2026, nor Manufacturing Dive's May 2025 report on the restructuring puts a layoff at Panasonic's battery plants. That report placed them at a Sparks, Nevada production site supplying Tesla and a $4 billion De Soto, Kansas factory being readied to open, and said the layoffs would largely hit sales and indirect departments.
How many WARN notices has Panasonic filed?
Panasonic and its units account for 30 filings in our WARN tracker, going back to 1991. Twenty-one carry Panasonic names and eight carry Matsushita, which a 2008 SEC filing gives as Panasonic Corporation's earlier name, while one came from the Salem solar plant that a pv magazine USA report says opened as Sanyo Solar. California has the most of them, with eight.
