Laid off from Phillips 66.

Refinery shutdowns run through the company's record, from Louisiana to Los Angeles. Two of them, like some of its office reorganizations, kept part of the workforce on or offered it work elsewhere rather than letting everyone go, so a cut there hasn't always ended someone's time with the company.

What Phillips 66 layoffs have meant for employees

In two Phillips 66 refinery closings, the end of the work and the end of the jobs didn't arrive together. Los Angeles stopped making fuel late in 2025, according to Phillips 66's annual report for 2025, and its 2026 California notices set end dates running into December 2026. At the Alliance refinery in Louisiana, Reuters reported in 2022 that about half the hourly staff were to leave first and the rest to stay through May 1. If you're working through a closing like these, the day a plant stops and the date on a notice can sit months apart. In both, production stopped well ahead of the end dates set for the jobs.

Some of these cuts came with somewhere to go for part of the workforce, whether that was work at other locations for Santa Maria refinery staff, as CalCoastNews reported, positions at other sites for some DCP Midstream employees, which a spokesperson described to the Denver Gazette, or the roughly 27 hourly workers Reuters' sources said were training to run Alliance's new terminal. If you hold restricted stock and you're offered a place at another Phillips 66 site, Phillips 66's Restricted Stock Program terms don't treat a transfer between Phillips 66 and its approved wholly owned subsidiaries as a termination for award purposes, which is worth weighing beside the pay, the hours and the drive.

In the company-wide cost cutting that began in 2022, the numbers attached to cuts have blended different things. That year Phillips 66 projected a workforce under 12,900 by the end of 2022, down from 14,000, and a spokesperson told CNN the drop came from attrition and eliminated positions together, with people leaving on their own shrinking how many employees the reductions reached. The 2023 finance and procurement cut Argus reported counted contractors alongside employees, while others in those teams were to stay on in new roles. So if your department shows up in an announcement like these, the headline figure can run ahead of the number of people actually let go, and being moved to another job in-house is a different outcome from a layoff.

Some layoff notices for Phillips 66 work carry another company's name. Sentinel Transportation, DCP Midstream and Hunt & Sons LLC all appear on the company's 2025 subsidiary listing, and each filed notices under its own name. Sentinel is a wholly owned unit that provides some of Phillips 66's truck movements, so its drivers' notices sit apart from any refinery's. All 14 sites on Hunt & Sons' October 2024 notices appear again among Sentinel's March 2026 notices, so some of the same places drew notices from two Phillips 66 units. If you worked for Sentinel, Hunt & Sons or DCP Midstream, the notices for those events carry the unit's own name, so finding them can take a search under that name instead of Phillips 66's.

If you're handed a release of liability when you're laid off and you still have awards from the company's restricted stock program, the program terms make keeping a prorated portion of those awards depend on completing the release and not revoking it, and without that the awards are forfeited. So any deadline attached to the release is worth marking on the calendar, along with any window for revoking it. Claim rules for jobs in California sit at California unemployment benefits, with that state's notice list at California layoffs, and Colorado's are at Colorado unemployment benefits.

Your stock and equity

Phillips 66 restricted stock, under the company's Restricted Stock Program terms, vests three years after the grant for grades 18 and up and a third a year for grades 13 to 17. Those terms count a job loss as a layoff when it falls under the Phillips 66 Severance Pay Plan or a similar plan and any required release of liability is executed and not revoked.

What to do if you're laid off from Phillips 66

Phillips 66 layoff and severance questions

How many jobs is Phillips 66 cutting at the Los Angeles refinery?

Phillips 66's nine California WARN notices for the refinery's Wilmington and Carson sites in 2026 cover 306 jobs, the first of them set to end in April and the last in December. Those are jobs the notices scheduled to end, not a tally of people already gone. When the closing was announced in October 2024, the refinery had, according to Reuters, about 600 employees and 300 contractors.

What severance has Phillips 66 given laid-off employees?

No severance formula or per-person amount appears in the reporting we track. Phillips 66's 2025 Form 10-K carries accounting charges instead, $44 million of severance costs that the Los Angeles decision added in 2024 and a 2023 restructuring bill of $177 million that was primarily consulting fees and severance. At Los Angeles, the United Steelworkers, Reuters reported, planned to bargain over severance pay and benefits on behalf of affected workers.

What happens to my Phillips 66 stock if I'm laid off?

If you hold awards under Phillips 66's Restricted Stock Program, part of its 2022 omnibus plan, its Restricted Stock Program terms say a termination by reason of layoff lets you keep a prorated portion of each award if you complete the required release of liability. Unless you execute the release and don't revoke it, they say all awards are forfeited. February annual awards are prorated by a percentage in the terms' Attachment A, other awards by months from grant to termination over 12.
