Pinterest's board amended the severance plan for certain employees in Level 21 positions on September 30, 2026, an October 2026 filing shows, so that participants let go without cause outside a change in control also receive a pro-rated share of their target annual bonus for that year, if they sign a separation and release agreement and keep following their confidential information and invention assignment agreement.

What Pinterest layoffs have meant for employees

Pinterest has recorded more under its 2026 plan than it first estimated. Pinterest put the charges at about $35 million to $45 million in its January 2026 filing, but its June-quarter filing shows $61.4 million recorded by June 30 and up to $69.6 million expected by the end of September, when the plan was due to finish. Most of the first-half charges were severance and other personnel costs, and $14.1 million was share-based compensation. The 2023 plan's charges ran the other way in the 10-K for 2023, with $117.3 million of $126.9 million for office space reductions, including leaving 505 Brannan Street, and $9.6 million for severance and other personnel costs. If your job was a Level 21 role on Pinterest's U.S. payroll and it ended without cause, the plan for that level gives eligible employees three months of outplacement, which has to be started within a month of the termination date. If a severance agreement is in front of you, severance negotiation explains how long you usually get to review it and which of its clauses tend to move.

Inside the company, who had been cut was treated as private. After the announcement, some employees at a meeting where Pinterest's technology chief addressed the layoffs asked which teams were impacted and whether more job cuts were coming, CNBC reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. Pinterest wouldn't disclose detailed information about the layoffs out of concern for staffers' privacy, chief executive Bill Ready said at an all-hands meeting. "We shared some of those major structural changes," he said, and the smaller ones would be communicated at the team level. When engineers tried to identify the people let go, Pinterest fired them, and its spokesperson called what they did a clear violation of policy and of former colleagues' privacy, an account some employees disputed. Ready told staff that anyone "working against the direction of the company" who disagreed with its mission should consider a job elsewhere. If you're still at Pinterest and trying to learn how the cut reached your part of the company, the team level is where Ready said that would come, and the firings show where the company drew the line on finding out another way.

Part of what the cuts saved was meant for hiring. Pinterest's AI-forward strategy included hiring AI-proficient talent, a spokesperson told Fast Company in January, and the company planned to reinvest in key development areas even as its staffing fell, the January filing said. The restructuring was expected to generate about $100 million in annual non-GAAP operating-expense savings, finance chief Julia Donnelly told analysts on the fourth-quarter call in February, and Pinterest expected to reinvest roughly half, mainly in its sales transformation and AI talent. By August, Pinterest was being thoughtful and disciplined about where it added headcount, she said on the second-quarter call. If your experience is in AI, those statements describe hiring Pinterest said it planned in 2026, which may be worth weighing if you're considering a return. If your work was elsewhere and you want to move toward that kind of role, AI skills after a layoff is about building that fluency inside your own field.

California accounts for all four Pinterest notices in our WARN tracker, and the 2026 set included a separate one for employees who worked remotely in the state. If your Pinterest job was based in California, California unemployment benefits lays out the state's claim process and what it asks of you. If it was outside the U.S., finishing the plan was subject to local law and consultation requirements, the January filing said. And if you're interviewing elsewhere, explaining a layoff has a short interview answer that names a round's scale and moves on.

Pinterest layoff and severance questions

How many employees did Pinterest lay off in 2026?

Pinterest put the reduction's reach at less than 15% of its staff in its January 2026 filing, and it told Fast Company it had around 5,200 employees as of December 2025. California's three Pinterest notices from January 27, in our WARN tracker, listed 118 jobs.

Why did Pinterest lay off employees in 2026?

Pinterest tied the plan to moving resources to AI-focused roles and teams, putting AI-powered products first and speeding up the overhaul of its sales and go-to-market approach, its 8-K from January 2026 says. Those first-quarter actions were about aligning the organization with its highest-priority opportunities and making room to invest, including in AI, Pinterest's finance chief, Julia Donnelly, said on the second-quarter call.

What severance has Pinterest given laid-off employees?

After the February 2023 cuts, Pinterest was committed to supporting departing employees with separation packages, benefits and other services, a spokesperson told TechCrunch. Its filings record $44.1 million of severance and other personnel costs as 2026 restructuring charges through June 30, 2026, in the 10-Q for that quarter, and $9.6 million for the 2023 plan, in the 10-K for 2023. Those are accounting charges rather than cash payments, and neither filing nor the 2023 statement sets out what an individual employee received in 2026.

Does Pinterest have a severance plan?

Pinterest has filed one for Level 21 employees who work in the U.S. on its U.S. payroll, excluding, among others, anyone eligible for severance under a separate company agreement or on an international assignment. For a termination without cause outside a change in control, the 2023 plan document pays 24 months of base salary, less a month per full month employed, so 12 months after a year, plus cash for estimated COBRA premiums for those months to those enrolled in its health plans, once a release becomes effective and irrevocable.

Why did Pinterest fire engineers after its 2026 layoffs?

After being told the company wouldn't broadly share who was affected, two engineers wrote custom scripts that improperly accessed confidential information to find the names and locations of everyone dismissed, then shared the results, a Pinterest spokesperson told CNBC. Several employees disputed that to CNBC, saying the engineers had posted instructions for prompting the staff directory, a tool anyone at the company could use.
