Laid off from Pixar.
Three different numbers describe Pixar's July 2026 cut, and the smallest is the one the studio filed with California. Pixar is also the only Disney business with its own appendix in the filed severance plan, which makes that appendix worth asking for by name.

Pixar layoff history
Pixar's July 2026 round has three different sizes on the public record. The studio told California it was ending 108 jobs at the Emeryville headquarters, most of them effective September 26, with the reductions concentrated in production and operations. TheWrap put the number at 116, sourced to an individual with knowledge. HR Executive reported about 150, attributing that count to TheWrap as well. Disney announced several hundred cuts across corporate functions, ESPN, television and the film studios that Tuesday, confirmed no breakdown by division and disclosed no total. Only the first of those figures arrived on a state form with a filing date behind it.
The same spread sits on the 2024 round. It's remembered as about 175 people, the figure a Disney spokesperson gave CNBC. The email president Jim Morris sent staff on May 21, 2024 put it at 181, about 14% of the workforce, and 181 is also what reached California's Employment Development Department, effective that July 26. Cartoon Brew called it the biggest reduction in the studio's history, against a workforce of about 1,300, after January reports had floated as much as 20%. Checking your own paperwork against a headline means checking it against the loosest of those numbers.
The record runs back further than the last two years. The June 2023 round took 75 positions, including Lightyear director Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman, the first significant cuts there in a decade and part of Bob Iger's plan to eliminate 7,000 Disney jobs and $5.5 billion in costs. Before that, 2013 took about 30 after the studio postponed The Good Dinosaur. Twice now a reduction has landed alongside the studio's best commercial news. The 2024 layoffs carried on through the month Inside Out 2 became Pixar's highest-grossing release, and the 2026 round came after Toy Story 5 passed $1 billion worldwide.
Pixar sits inside Disney, which bought it in 2006, so the severance document is Disney's. The Severance Pay Plan is filed with the SEC and pays eligible employees by employment position and completed years of service, counting only whole years and running on base pay that leaves out bonuses, overtime and shift differentials. Its coverage reaches Disney and any subsidiary the Plan Administrator has approved to adopt it, and the contents page lists exactly one participating-employer appendix, Appendix A for Pixar. That appendix is the piece worth asking for by name, in writing, alongside the plan itself. Eligibility turns on a classification the company marked eligible and on holding no personal services contract, and your position is the Plan Administrator's call, with the plan saying outright that a job title by itself decides nothing.
California's rules run alongside the plan. The state wants 60 days of written notice before a mass layoff, and the notice reaches more people than the ones losing the jobs, the EDD and local officials among them. From 2026 it also has to set out the help on offer to those being let go, say whether the employer is coordinating with a local workforce board or with nobody at all, and give contact details with a short description of the services. A notice that falls under that requirement should carry all of it, so read any filing covering your own site with an eye for it. A filing that covers you belongs in our WARN filing tracker.

How Pixar's layoffs compare to other companies
Pixar has been Disney's since 2006, and the severance document that matters here is Disney's, though the California notices are filed under Pixar's own name. Severance is where the studio differs from its Disney siblings. The filed plan lists exactly one participating-employer appendix and it belongs to Pixar, but the appendix text is absent from the exhibit, so its terms stay off the public record.
What to do after being laid off from Pixar
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Pixar's biggest hubs: California. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Pixar's hub states run: California, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Pixar layoff and severance questions
How many people did Pixar lay off in 2026?
That depends on which record you read. Pixar's own California filing covers 108 jobs at the Emeryville headquarters, most of them effective September 26, 2026. Reporting that week ran higher, at 116 from an individual with knowledge of the cuts and about 150 in another account. Disney announced several hundred cuts across the company and confirmed no breakdown by division. The filing appears in our tracker.
Why is Pixar having layoffs?
The 2024 round followed the studio's move away from making series for Disney+ and back to feature films, which is how president Jim Morris described it to staff. For 2026, a source familiar with the studio told Variety the changes reflected shifting production needs rather than performance, part of a three-year shift toward fewer, higher-budget theatrical releases. Both rounds landed inside much larger Disney reductions.
What severance does Pixar pay in layoffs?
No terms on record for the 2023, 2024 or 2026 rounds. What exists instead is Disney's Severance Pay Plan, an SEC exhibit anyone can open, paying eligible employees on a schedule set by employment position and completed years of service. Pixar is the sole participating employer the plan gives an appendix to, so ask for that appendix by name as well as the plan itself. Read both against your own separation agreement before you sign, because the filed plan doesn't settle which document controls your payment.
Did Pixar file a WARN notice for its layoffs?
For the recent rounds, yes. Our tracker carries 3 filings under Pixar's name all time, and 1 filing covering 108 jobs since the start of 2025, in California. The state generally wants 60 days of written notice from employers of 75 people or more when 50 or more jobs go inside 30 days, sent to the workers affected, the EDD, the chief elected official and the local workforce development area. Whether the law demanded a notice for any one cut is a separate question, and a missing row can't answer it.
Does Disney's severance plan cover Pixar employees?
The plan is written to extend past Disney itself, and Pixar is the one business it names. Coverage runs to Disney and to any subsidiary or controlled group member whose adoption the Plan Administrator has approved, and the contents page shows a lone participating-employer appendix, Appendix A, under Pixar's name. Eligibility still depends on three things, that your classification was one the company marked eligible, that you hold no personal services contract, and that you never waived the plan. Ask in writing which plan and which appendix your own separation runs under.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Pixar?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Pixar's biggest U.S. hubs are California. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Pixar?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Pixar?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Pixar?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
