Laid off from Prudential Financial.
Prudential's Newark cuts arrive as small WARN notices posted months before anyone's last day, which is why the running totals disagree. Terms aren't a mystery either. The company's severance plan sits on file with the SEC, carrying a service-based formula and language calling the payment discretionary rather than a right.

Prudential Financial layoff history
If a WARN letter from Prudential has landed on you, the date on it probably isn't the date you stop working. New Jersey keeps those two things in separate columns, a month the notice was posted and an effective date, and Prudential's notices have run a long way apart. The one posted in July 2026 covers 89 roles that end September 18. The one posted in May covered 53 that ended July 17. Before those, notices posted in July, September and November 2025 covered 57, 63 and 63 roles, with effective dates stretching into February 2026.
That spacing is also why press totals and our tracker's totals disagree. Press tallies add up notices by the month they were posted, which is how Insurance Business reached 237 announced Newark cuts by March 2026 and a combined 637 for 2024. Every New Jersey row we hold carries an effective date and no notice date, so our tracker counts by the day the jobs end. On that basis it holds seven filings covering 617 jobs since the start of 2025, four of them covering 259 jobs in 2026, and its largest single filing, 238 jobs, took effect in April 2025. The same March report put fourth-quarter net income at $905 million, against a $57 million loss a year earlier.
Severance isn't a blank here. Prudential's severance plan is a public document, filed with the SEC and restated in October 2019, and its Appendix A runs weeks of pay against years of service for the employees the plan covers. Six weeks at a year or less, nine at three years, 30 at ten, 60 at twenty, and 78 weeks at twenty-six or more, with service measured from the employee's current appointment date and rounded up to the next full year. The same plan says it doesn't provide severance as a matter of right, and that whether severance gets paid at all sits solely within the company's discretion. Nothing in the reporting we track connects a particular Newark round to it.
That discretion matters, because the plan runs under ERISA. An amendment effective April 1, 2026 named the Prudential Administrative Committee as the plan administrator and gave an appeals committee the job of reviewing and deciding appeals on claims for benefits. If you file a claim for plan severance and it's denied, that committee is where the appeal goes. The amendment doesn't set out the procedure or its deadlines, so ask for the plan's claims procedure in writing and work to the dates it gives you.
One Prudential separation can be read in full. Caroline Feeney's position was eliminated effective March 31, 2026, she stayed to a separation date of October 31, and her filed letter put an estimated severance payment at a gross $5,162,500 under that same plan. Her numbers were negotiated, so read them as scale rather than a benchmark. She had forty-five days after her separation date to sign the release and couldn't sign before the day after it, the release form allowed seven days to revoke after signing, and the company advised her in writing to see a lawyer first. That release also gave up claims under the federal WARN Act and several New Jersey statutes, which is the clause to read slowly in your own paperwork.
If the plan is to report a WARN problem to the state, read the department's own page first. New Jersey's Department of Labor and Workforce Development says it has neither enforcement authority nor rulemaking authority under the state's WARN act, and that its role runs to dispatching the rapid response team and giving employers the notification form. Rapid response still earns the call, since it covers unemployment eligibility, claim filing and job referrals. For scale, Prudential reported 36,824 employees at the end of 2025 against 38,196 a year earlier, with the United States count down from 14,087 to 13,879. The drop only shows up when you set the two filings side by side; Prudential never announced it as a reduction, and most of the shrinkage sits outside the United States.

July 2026 notice · 89 Newark roles with an effective date of September 18, 2026, listed in New Jersey's 2026 WARN archive and in our tracker
No terms on record for this round. Prudential's severance plan is on file with the SEC, and Appendix A of it sets weeks of pay against years of service for the employees it covers.
May 2026 notice · 53 Newark roles with an effective date of July 17, 2026, posted two months before the notice that followed it
No terms on record for this round. That same filed plan states that severance isn't paid as a matter of right, and its schedule reaches only the employees it covers.

How Prudential Financial's layoffs compare to other companies
The cuts land as a series rather than one announced round, each notice carrying an effective date months past the month it was posted. What's different about Prudential is how much of the paperwork is public. Its severance plan is an SEC exhibit with its own eligibility rules, and so is the letter agreement covering the executive whose own job went in the same reorganization.
What to do after being laid off from Prudential Financial
- File for unemployment in the state where you worked. Benefits run from your filing date, and severance usually doesn't block you. Prudential Financial's biggest hubs: New Jersey, Georgia. Somewhere else? Every state is here.
- Apply for financial and hardship assistance. Unemployment supplements income, but food benefits, health coverage and utility help are often available as well. Here's some of what Prudential Financial's hub states run: New Jersey, Georgia, and every other state is here.
- Mind the health insurance window. Losing coverage opens a 60-day special enrollment period, and an ACA plan usually beats unsubsidized COBRA. Compare your options before the employer coverage lapses, and read how the COBRA clocks run if you are weighing it seriously.
- Get your real runway number. Severance plus savings divided by reality. The calculator takes five minutes.
- Know which clocks are already running. Severance review windows, COBRA election, visa grace periods, and 401(k) rollovers all run on federal deadlines that started at termination. All five deadlines are here.
Prudential Financial layoff and severance questions
Is Prudential doing layoffs in 2026?
Yes. New Jersey's 2026 archive lists three Newark notices from Prudential, posted in March, May and July and covering 54, 53 and 89 workers. Counting by effective date instead, our tracker holds four filings covering 259 jobs in 2026, all in New Jersey. Prudential has described the reductions as an ongoing review of its structure that includes periodically eliminating certain roles that no longer align with its strategy.
What severance do laid-off Prudential employees get?
There's a published schedule, though it stops short of a promise. The Prudential Severance Plan, filed with the SEC and restated in October 2019, runs weeks of pay against years of service in Appendix A for the employees it covers, from six weeks at a year or less to 78 weeks at twenty-six or more, with service rounded up to the next full year. The same plan says it doesn't provide severance as a matter of right, and that whether severance gets paid sits solely within the company's discretion. What any individual Newark round offered isn't published, and your own agreement controls.
Why does Prudential file so many small WARN notices?
The record shows the pattern more clearly than the reason. New Jersey lists the Newark reductions as separately dated notices covering a few dozen roles each, every one with its own posted month and effective date. That's also why totals differ by who's counting. Press tallies group the notices by the month they were posted, and our tracker groups the same events by the date they take effect.
Why did Caroline Feeney leave Prudential?
Her position was eliminated. Prudential announced on December 18, 2025 that it was realigning senior leadership, putting the heads of its U.S. businesses, Emerging Markets, the Japan Group and PGIM under CEO Andrew Sullivan, who said the company was "aligning our leadership structure with our strategy to build a more agile, more focused Prudential". Feeney, the global head of Retirement and Insurance, departed as part of it. Her terms are public because her letter agreement was filed with the 2025 10-K.
When do Prudential's Newark layoffs actually take effect?
Months after the notice, on the record so far. New Jersey's archive keeps the posted month and the effective date in separate columns, and Prudential's July 2026 notice covers 89 roles effective September 18 while its May notice covered 53 effective July 17. NJ.com put the gap down to the federal WARN Act's 60 days of advance notice for employers with 100 or more employees, a rule that reaches covered employers and covered events rather than every layoff.
Can I appeal if Prudential denies me severance?
The plan names who decides one. A fourth amendment effective April 1, 2026 named the Prudential Administrative Committee as the plan administrator within the meaning of ERISA, and gave an appeals committee the job of reviewing and deciding all appeals on claims for benefits. So a denied claim for plan severance has a named committee to appeal to. That amendment doesn't set the deadlines, so ask for the operative claims procedure in writing and work to the dates in it.
Where do I file for unemployment after being laid off from Prudential Financial?
In the state where you worked, not where the company is headquartered. Prudential Financial's biggest U.S. hubs are New Jersey, Georgia. Severance usually doesn't block you from filing, and benefits run from your filing date, so file the same week.
Is it OK to file for unemployment after a layoff at Prudential Financial?
Yes. Unemployment insurance is funded by payroll taxes employers pay on wages, the claim never appears on credit reports or background checks, and future employers cannot see it. If the hesitation itself is the obstacle, whether filing is OK has its own article.
What happens to my health insurance after a layoff at Prudential Financial?
Your plan sets the end date rather than the law, so the separation packet is where that date actually lives, and it is often the last day of the month rather than your last day of work. After coverage ends, COBRA lets you keep the identical plan by paying the whole premium yourself, up to 102 percent of what the plan really costs, which lands as several times the payroll deduction you were used to. You get 60 days to elect, counted from the later of coverage ending or the election notice arriving, and electing reaches the coverage back to the day the old plan stopped so no gap exists. How continuation coverage works walks the timing, and whether to take it rather than a marketplace plan is a separate decision.
Should I sign the severance agreement right away?
First pin down how much review time you actually have. If you're 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to consider an agreement that waives age claims, 45 in a group layoff, and a waiver signed under a shorter deadline can be invalid. If you're under 40, no federal window applies and the deadline in your packet may be real, so confirm it in writing and ask for more time if you need it. Use whatever window you have to read the release terms, especially non-disparagement and no-lawsuit clauses, and don't stall past a real deadline, because offers can be withdrawn.
Can I collect unemployment if I got severance from Prudential Financial?
Usually yes, though some states delay benefits until severance pay periods end, and lump sums are treated differently than salary continuation. Check your state's rules on our state benefit pages, and file immediately either way so your claim date is locked in.
